To be gutted the holidays are nearly over?

I love the school holidays. I love spending time with the kids. I save my annual leave and take most of it in the summer holidays and it’s so much fun all hanging out together without schedules, play dates, routines.

So many of my friends and people I follow on social media complain about the school holidays. They seem to wish them away.

I’m just sad about how quickly the holidays go and how quickly my kids are growing up. Soon we won’t spend holidays together. My eldest turned 13 and I can see their focus turning outwards towards friends already. This time last year seems so recent, time flies and that saddens me.

Does anyone else just love the kids being off school, love the lack of routine, the freedom to do what you want and not wish it away?

I feel the same, I love the holidays but as I've said before we (me and DH) both work term time only so no of the childcare worries.

Abracad · 23/08/2019 08:09

Same here. It’s all going too fast.

LuckyAmy1986 · 23/08/2019 08:10

I hate when the kids go back to school! YANBU

Doje · 23/08/2019 08:16

YANBU. I'm sat having a coffee in my Pj's watching the kids build a den. Normally at this time on a Friday I'm getting slightly fraught chivvying kids along to eat their breakfast, have a wee, have they got PE kit / books / Bramble the bloody bear.

Oh, and I enjoy having the kids around too....

CantSleepWontSleepSleep · 23/08/2019 08:20

After 9 weeks holidays in Ireland I'm ready for them to go back. Think we all need a bit of routine!

TreacherousPissFlap · 23/08/2019 08:22

YANBU.
DS has had something of a summer of discovery. From being a geeky little boy when school broke up, this summer has seen him undertake a big experience and return a young man, become involved in a new friendship group, go to parties and develop a passionate interest in an old hobby. I picked him up from a party last week and he told me he had had "the best summer ever".
His childhood is so far removed from mine and I never want his summer to end.

Birdtablegreen · 23/08/2019 08:23

I’ve been enjoying the reduction in traffic on my daily commute so I’m also gutted the holidays are ending Grin

LynetteScavo · 23/08/2019 08:23

I love, love the summer holidays!
I love spending by time with my DC, I adore the warmer weather and the lack of stress. I'm still in bed, even though I woke up two hours agoGrin

DS1 is home from uni and I shall miss him when he goes back.

The summer holidays are the best tine of year!

Turquoisetamborine · 23/08/2019 08:25

I’ve enjoyed this summer with the kids more than any of the previous ones. I think it helps that they are getting older.

StateOfMind · 23/08/2019 08:25

I adore the holidays. I only work term time so i’ve had the whole holiday with my DCs. We’ve had such fun and it’s been brilliant to spend so much time with them. Will be very sad to go back to work!

Ledkr · 23/08/2019 08:26

Me too. I've worked most of it although am part time but even that is easy with no homework or u inform to get ready and we have had lovely lie ins.
Dd Is going to be devastated

Mumshappy · 23/08/2019 08:27

I normally wish the last couple of weeks away and want to get back in a better routine. This year it's the opposite. Ds16 months is sleeping in until 8.30 some mornings and I'm loving being able to take our time no alarms etc. Even dd15 is all sweetness and light. Making the most of it!

tequilasunrises · 23/08/2019 08:29

Sorry OP I’m sooo glad they are coming to an end - but only becaue I live in a town on the M5 and my commute home requires the M5 southbound. Most days (Fridays particularly horrific) I’m in standstill traffic with a load of caravans and I can’t wait for it to end!

formerbabe · 23/08/2019 08:30

the freedom to do what you want

I don't have freedom in the school holidays...there's lots I want to do but can't because I'm looking after my dc. When they're at school, I have more freedom. I don't work though.

MerryChristmasHarry · 23/08/2019 09:04

I can't believe how quickly it's gone.

AdalindMeisner · 23/08/2019 09:19

The first half of the holidays were ace but My eldest daughter has been at home for two years (16, ASD, school refuse) she is going to college (got her place, fingers crossed she will get there) and my youngest (4) is starting school (been at nursery full time since 3) and is now struggling with lack of routine. I have ever been so glad for the holidays to come to an end. I might actually be able to breathe for once instead of feeling like I'm suffocating.

(I do have a small niggle of anxiety about dd2 starting school as don't want to go down the same path as her big sister).

PumpkinPie2016 · 23/08/2019 09:21

We've had a good summer here and it's been nice not to have all the mayhem of term time. I'm a secondary teacher so I have been home with DS and I have enjoyed it.

I'm 50/50 about the holidays ending tbh. We've had a great time but DS will be happy to see his friends again (he's seen the odd one but not many as they are little and lots have been away). We were really pleased with the GCSE results yesterday and I am quite looking forward to all the exciting things we have planned for this academic year. I like my job (mostly!) and quite like routine.

We have a week away booked for Oct so that will be something to look forward to.

BrunettesDoItBetter · 23/08/2019 09:30

I'm a bit of both.I love spending lots of time with ds but I'm more of a routine person and I'm looking forward to things getting back to "normal"

PictureWall · 23/08/2019 09:30

I really resent the way our family life is massively intruded upon by school so much of the year. I feel my kids have developed so much more with some freedom this summer.

I’d love to home school but we can’t afford it and I’ve missed that boat with the eldest two as they are too into their social lives.

We've enjoyed the summer, because I plan it carefully so that we don't get too bored. Just lazing around day after day is enough to make me want to run screaming out of the house on about day three! So the DC do a week's activity, we visit my family for a week, have a week's holiday, plus some days out as a family and with friends, it's a nice mixture with some lazy days in between. By the time Sept rolls around though we're all ready for the new term to begin again. I know what you mean about the sadness of time passing. My oldest is nearly 12 and going to secondary. Only seven more years Sad

JellyCatFish · 23/08/2019 09:32

I'm counting down the hours!

FuzzyPuffling · 23/08/2019 09:34

I live in a touristy area and can't wait for the school holidays to end. I want my beach back!!! (But I am glad that people have enjoyed their time here)

Hoppinggreen · 23/08/2019 09:35

I’m going to miss my 2 when they go back to school
It’s not just school though, most other activities stop too so no getting home from school, throwing food at them and then out again
I also like the fact that I don’t have to pick DS up so whatever I’m doing I have to clock watch from about 2

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/08/2019 09:36

It's nice if you can take a lot of annual leave or don't WOH.

I'm a single parent, only allowed to take one week off in the summer holidays so I'm crippled by childcare costs and have guilt at not being able to take more time off with DS. So no, I don't really enjoy the summer holidays to be honest.

Kolo · 23/08/2019 09:37

I love the summer holidays! Love the lazy mornings, hanging around in PJs. Love being able to meet up with friends, days out, camping trips, duvet days. I love spending time with my kids without the frantic rush of school/work.
