Is it weird to wash your hair every day?

I know it’s meant to be better to wash your hair infrequently - but is it that unusual to wash it every day? I have washed my hair every day for about the last 20 years but am planning to try and cut down.

But I just don’t feel like I’ve washed properly if I leave my hair! I hate feeling it unwashed around my face (even if tied up)

If you do wash yours once a week etc, HOW do you manage to go to work without greasy hair? Does it just stop being greasy? Douse it in dry shampoo? Seriously looking for tips here!

Or AIBU to think I should just keep washing it every morning?

Daily. It’s wet in the shower anyway. It gets as dirty and sweaty as a body. It’s bouncier and shinier if washed daily.

lazylinguist · 23/08/2019 08:47

Another one here with fine hair that gets greasy quickly. Have tried 'training' it, tried sulphate-free shampoos, rinsing instead of shampooing etc etc. None of it works for me.

megletthesecond · 23/08/2019 08:49

I wash mine every day. It's fine and wavy so looks greasy if I don't.
FWIW I never blow dry or colour it which must minimise any damage.

violashift · 23/08/2019 08:49

I wash mine every day. It's long and bleached and I can't brush it without lots of conditioner and that's without the feeling of being dirty if I don't.

I hate the unwashed dirty feeling on any part of me.

StarlingsInSummer · 23/08/2019 08:52

@icecreamsundae32 I used to wear a shower cap if I was cooking someone very smelly and I was going out later! Now I rarely go out in the evening so it just smells until next morning when I have a shower.

I'm of an age to remember smoky pubs and clubs - my hair used to stink of cigarette smoke after a night out so I'd have to wash it the next morning.

honeyloops · 23/08/2019 08:53

I wash mine once, maybe twice, a week - it's long, the front does get a bit flat but I dry shampoo it. If I wash more often it aggravates my scalp and makes it sore and dry. I've never washed every day, takes me half an hour to dry so couldn't be arsed, but I used to wash every other day and it got greasy much, much quicker then.

StarlingsInSummer · 23/08/2019 08:54

But I don't hate my greasy skin and hair too much - I have far fewer wrinkles and lines than friends of the same age with dry hair and skin. That's obviously just anecdata though.

KatharinaRosalie · 23/08/2019 08:58

Same here starlings, I'm in my 40s and don't even have any crow's feet yet.

FeeFee832 · 23/08/2019 09:00

I wash it every day! I think it smells funny if you don't or has a greasy look IMO

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 23/08/2019 09:02

For nearly 12 years (it's started during pregnancy with my oldest DS) I washed my hair everyday (only exception would be if I was poorly and literally couldn't move out of bed). I actually became really obsessive about it and genuinely didn't feel clean unless my hair had been washed.

Over the last year or so I've tried to break the habit and have settled into a every second day routine although sometimes I revert back for a few days.

I don't think my behaviour is normal though to be honest. I think it's linked to anxiety etc as I would honestly dread not being able to wash my hair, couldn't relax if it wasn't washed etc.

YesQueen · 23/08/2019 09:03

@FeeFee832 not all hair types! I never use shampoo, just conditioner and I wash every 3 days. My hair never gets greasy

Sayhellotothethings · 23/08/2019 09:03

Washing your hair daily strips your hair and scalp of natural oils, so it makes more to try to compensate, hence getting greasy quickly.
Try dry shampoo in between washes and use a shampoo specifically for your hair type.

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 23/08/2019 09:06

I wash mine every 3-4 days. My hair is naturally curly and I wash with a non-sulphate shampoo every 2 weeks, and just use a conditioner the other times I wash it.

It would be a chore to wash it every day due to how long it takes to dry.

BrunettesDoItBetter · 23/08/2019 09:06

I dont think it's the washing that's an issue to hair, its the heat damage from hairdryers/straighteners etc.I wash mine every other day.

bobstersmum · 23/08/2019 09:09

I used to be exactly the same, I would wash it in the morning and then if I was going out that night, I'd wash it again! It's always been long too so it was a chore but I just felt dirty if it wasn't fresh. When I had my kids I started using dry shampoo for a while. Now I wash my hair every other day and it stays nice for the second day.

BarbedBloom · 23/08/2019 09:10

I have to wash mine every day. The only time I have ever got away with not doing it was when I was blonde. I tried going to every other day with dry shampoo on non wash days to reset it but it didn't work after a couple of months and my manager commented, so switched back. Dry shampoo also makes my head itchy.

Pinkblueberry · 23/08/2019 09:13

Everyone’s hair is different - mine goes greasy after a day, the same as the oily skin on my face so I wash it most days and use dry shampoo when I’m in a rush. I also use quite a bit of hair spray, so just like I clean my face of makeup I don’t really want hairspray and volumising powder building up for days.

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 23/08/2019 09:17

I think the "training" thing only works if you've previously been using shampoos that are too astringent for your hair which artificially strips the oils. (If you're already using a mild shampoo it's probably not going to make much difference.) The speed with which your scalp replaces sebum which has been removed with detergent is mostly going to be down to your individual hormones. Which is why some people swear by training your hair and others don't see any improvement no matter how long they try for!

Also your hair type, as we've seen in this thread period with curly hair can generally go longer without a wash than someone with fine straight hair.

CurlyMango · 23/08/2019 09:20

Wash mine about twice a week, sometimes once a week. Get over your hair and use less water and chemicals. It doesn’t need it every day and will be in better condition. OH and you won’t smell

saaagp · 23/08/2019 09:26

I have long thick hair (1/2 Indian) and it would be a mess if I washed it every day. I think my hair looks best on day 2 or 3. I wash my hair every 5 days and still got compliments the day before I wash it. It does not smell at all.

My mum (Irish), however, would look a mess if she had the same routine.

paddingtonbearsmarmalade · 23/08/2019 09:37

My mum has always washed her hair every day and regularly gets compliments from hairdressers about how soft and lovely it is.

My hair is very long and a total PITA to wash/dry/style so I do it 2-3 times a week and try to time exercise with hairwash days so it doesn’t get gross! (If I continue upping my exercise as planned I’ll probably have to wash it more often 🙄).

RollaCola84 · 23/08/2019 09:38

I've washed mine virtually every day since the start of secondary school so again more than 20 years. I think the only time I didn't was when I had flu in university and barely left bed for a week !

My hair is fine and looks greasy and dank if I don't, I also hate how it feels if its unwashed for more than 24hrs. But as well as being fine my hair is also short so its quick to wash and barely takes ten minutes to blast dry. I think it takes my partner longer to shave !!

flumposie · 23/08/2019 09:45

wash it every day as part of my shower. I have fine hair and it looks greasy if not washed.

bluetue · 23/08/2019 09:46

I love the feeling of clean hair so feel dirty if I don't do it every day

Teddybear45 · 23/08/2019 09:49

I am Indian and have long thick hair. Once a week is more than enough for washing, and I often have to use leave in conditioner multiple times a week to be able to comb it. I think the only people who could probably get away with washing their hair everyday are women with thin, flat hair but even then I imagine it’s not healthy for them long term. I am pushing 40 now and all the women my age I know who wash 1-2 times a week have far healthier hair than those who wash everyday.
