Tearing my hair out about hair loss

Help!
I’m in my mid-40s, going through peri menopause. About 2 weeks ago, my hair started feeling noticeably thinner - I’ve always had a really thick, full head of hair. Now it seems to be thinning at an alarming rate.
Anyone else experienced this? Is there anything I can do to reduce the thinning?
I would tear my hair out over this if I had lots left to tear out. My hair has always been ‘my thing’.

I'm a lot younger than you, but I too have problems with thinning hair and breakage, usually when my folate levels are low. Have you have you had your iron checked?

FaFoutis · 22/08/2019 17:09

Are you on / have you been on antibiotics? It can be a side effect.

Try Alexander Turnbull’s ‘Love Hair’ supplements. Mine was falling out through severe stress before a diagnosis of cPTSD. They worked for me.

Mine was low Ferratin levels. Had a 3 month course of heavy duty iron tablets and things improved. Heavy periods to blame. Get some blood tests done.

I’m 36 and suffering with female pattern baldness. I’ve increased my folic acid and have been using roots products available from Superdrug’s and boots and I’ve seen a slight improvement after only 4 weeks. Speak to your gp and thinking of you xx

Op I'm the same SadI'm 47 and seem to have half the hair I used to, it seems to now fall out and snap off and I feel so down about how it looks.
Will be watching this thread with interest!

My hair is thinning around the hair line :-( I’ve had blood tests and my ferritin and folate are both very low so I’m hoping my hair will improve when I sort that out

I guess it’s the drs for me then. And look at some supplements.
Getting older is no bloody fun. I thought I’d run the full gamut of PM symptoms, but the hair loss is really upsetting me for some reason.

@Ellabella989 It should do, and relatively quickly too. I'm having an episode at the minute and have started taking my tablets again. For some reason, my body doesn't like holding onto it and my b12 plummets regularly too

I had the same but after some iron tablets for anaemia & vitamin B supplements its almost back to its normal state. I did consciously change my eating crap habit too which must help. I was a stranger to fruit & veg before!

Hi OP, I’m the same. I’ve had noticeable hairloss and it looks as if I’m receding. I lost hair after pregnancy(s) but it grew back but this time the hair follicles have disappeared. Went to GP last year for hormone test that came back ok. I also noticed yesterday that my eyebrows have thinned out too. It’s depressing.

Puffinhead · 22/08/2019 18:13

However, it’s weirdly comforting to know that I’m not alone so thank you for posting.

I feel your pain op. I've suffered (no other appropriate word) from hair loss for a few years. Always had fine hair, but lots of it, then after each child my parting got wider. Then my scalp was more and more visible. It's so disheartening. My iron store levels were low, so started on tablets from the gp, tried everything from not washing it too often, caster oil, distressing my life, some ginger and lemon concoction, high levels of vitamins (menopace) researched everything I could. It was actually a losing battle, I couldn't hide it any more and now wear a hair piece. I love it, my confidence has come back and I feel like me again. Try your gp and you could also see a trichologist. With luck it my be something simple that can be sorted.
