To think it's fine for lesbians to hold events without males and that Leeds Council shouldn't have banned this advert?

A group of lesbians have organised a march which is just for lesbian women but Leeds Council have removed an advert for it because the event is "exclusionary" - specifically because it excludes male lesbians:

www.leeds-live.co.uk/news/leeds-news/leeds-city-council-bans-advert-16786033

AIBU to think that sometimes it is fine to be exclusionary - that in both an LGBTQ+ community and a wider society where we are a very small minority and are often marginalised, it is fine for lesbian women to organise and attend our own events?

In the past I didn't really see the need for a lesbian-only march and would just go to Pride but I have changed my mind due to the current hostility towards lesbians at Pride and within the community generally and all the messages from the queer community that deny our sexual orientation - eg articles about how to have lesbian sex with a penis www.autostraddle.com/how-to-have-trans-woman-lesbian-sex-with-a-penis-414839/ and books like "Girl Sex 101" where 50% of the 'lesbians' have penises twitter.com/daphna2011/status/1136040777614733312/photo/1 and illustrations show "progressive, inclusive" lesbians happily snuggling up to penis-having 'lesbians' twitter.com/saskeah/status/698144922889756672/photo/1

Why shouldn't female homosexuals be able to find each other and meet up without our adverts being pulled and without people trying to sabotage our events and intimidate us?

No I’m not surprised that they would ban an advert that states ‘trans people are not welcome at this event’, no matter what the reason

Where does it say that? I would assume that transmen would be welcome, given that they are in fact actual women?

FreckledLeopard · 22/08/2019 13:09

Of course trans women are not women. Otherwise why would they require the 'trans' prefix?

I am a woman because I am an adult human female. Someone with a penis (whether lopped off or not) does not and can never fall into this category.

Sarahisthatyou · 22/08/2019 13:09

The only one saying 'male lesbian' is the OP - no one else. I've yet to meet a transwoman who calls herself a 'male lesbian'.
The meeting is still going ahead, the council just won't advertise it for free.
Mountain out of molehill as is often the case on here with anything to do with trans people.

TerfTalk · 22/08/2019 13:27

@Sarahisthatyou

I assure you, none of these lesbians "hate" trans women. In fact, the ones I have met are hugely sympathetic to trans women.

These lesbians simply want to protect their sex-based dating preferences. Why shouldn't they be allowed to do that?

Bezalelle · 22/08/2019 13:28

Mountain out of molehill as is often the case on here with anything to do with trans people.

I wonder how much it will be seen as making a mountain out of a molehill when the lawsuits start from young people who have been medically sterilised in the name of woke inclusion. When women's sport dies out. When female prisoners are raped by "women" inmates.

RaveOnThisCrazyFeeling · 22/08/2019 13:28

So Sarah do you disagree that transwomen are male? Are they to be considered not only women, but female sexed?

TrainspottingWelsh · 22/08/2019 13:29

Why should they let trans women attend just because they want to? I can’t imagine I’m alone in thinking that as a straight woman it’s perfectly acceptable to only be included in the rally after, rather than the event itself. Gay or straight, it’s still misogyny and patriarchy that are the root cause for inequality we all face.

But I and countless other women are able to understand that some things are unique to Lesbian women, and that we aren’t being discriminated against if they don’t include us. So why should people who have, and continue to benefit from male privilege, something that isn’t erased by being a trans woman, feel they have a right to be included?

Or should I demand the gay women at the event check their lesbian privilege and include me? Rather than doing something weird like wholeheartedly supporting other women and their right to define her own sexuality.

feelingverylazytoday · 22/08/2019 13:53

Transwomen can be lesbians, unless of course the kind of people who say transwomen aren't actually women
You mean one of the vast majority of people who understand biology?

Lifecraft · 22/08/2019 13:55

Transwomen can be lesbians, unless of course you the kind of person that says transwomen aren't actually women.

But transwomen aren't women, they are men living as women. Which is fine.

I know there's a "some women have penises" belief, but there's also a "the world is flat" belief. But fortunately, the facts don't give two hoots for beliefs.

Trans women are men.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/08/2019 13:59

Yanbu. The world is messed up.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/08/2019 14:01

transwomen aren't actually women

They're not. They're transwomen - males who 'identify as women'. Check the stonewall definitions, this covers far more than post-op people with dysphoria.

If you're one of the kind of people who say that transwomen are actually women, maybe you could tell us what the definition of 'women' is?

KUGA · 22/08/2019 14:03

ClssicQuine is spot on.

HugsAreMyDrugs · 22/08/2019 14:04

@Sarahisthatyou

But transwomen are male.

pottedshrimps · 22/08/2019 14:05

I lack the cognitive ability to even figure out what a 'male lesbian' is.
🤔

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 22/08/2019 14:06

The OP talked about male lesbians, not the article, but don't let that get in the way of bigotry.

When members of the LGBT+ community encountered the group, they halted the parade, surrounded them and loudly chanted 'No TERFs at Pride'.

Good for them!

HugsAreMyDrugs · 22/08/2019 14:08

So you think lesbians who don't do dick should not only not be allowed to attend pride but also deserve to be abused?

Wow you sound delightful.

Sarahisthatyou · 22/08/2019 14:10

'male lesbian' is a slur from the OP before everyone gets outraged by that.
No transwoman is claiming to be a 'male lesbian' here as far as I can tell but lets not let facts get in the way of the outrage or prevent the conversation turning immediately to rapists...

HugsAreMyDrugs · 22/08/2019 14:12

Do you think lesbians who don't want sick in them are bigots @Sarahisthatyou? Do you think they need to be re-educated?

HugsAreMyDrugs · 22/08/2019 14:13

*dick

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 22/08/2019 14:14

Trans women are male. That is a fact
If that trans woman then claims to be a lesbian, IMO they can't be but hey hi, then they would be a male lesbian
What is offensive about that. You can't force others into a belief system

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 22/08/2019 14:15

Hey ho but hi anyway

DuMondeB · 22/08/2019 14:16

Not even slightly unreasonable.

HugsAreMyDrugs · 22/08/2019 14:16

Transwomen are biologically male.

If you believe transwomen can be lesbians then the term male lesbian is correct. It is not a slur. It is simply factual.

The fact you're objecting to the term is very likely because you realise how ridiculous it is.

Sarahisthatyou · 22/08/2019 14:20

No Hugs, I don't. But I am active in the LGBT community, I know a lot of lesbians, and queer women. Not ONE of us has experience transwomen trying to shag us then accusing us of transphobia if we decline.
It's not a thing. Except on forums like Mumsnet where 'feminists' get outraged on our behalf. If i don't want to have sex with someone I don't regardless of what might be in their underwear,

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 22/08/2019 14:21

'male lesbian' is a slur

It's a tautology. But if you are all in with the trans ideology then you should be able to cope with it.
