To ask what a one year old wants for birthday?

My goddaughter is one this month. I don't have kids and don't know any other kids. What sort of thing do one year old babies like?

OP posts:
Anychance123 · 21/08/2019 21:48

To be honest when my daughter was one she got a lot of things all at once and was a bit overwhelmed. The best present we got was an annual membership to the local butterfly house. Is there anything similar close to you? A play area etc.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 21/08/2019 21:48

what sort of budget do you have OP? stacking blocks always go down a treat, but if you have a larger budget my dc loved this rocker toy

WhyBirdStop · 21/08/2019 21:49

I got DN a walker, a nice wooden push along one with blocks in, and was planning on similar for DS but he's 8 months and already cruising and taking a couple of steps between items of furniture so I think it might be redundant by the time he's one! So I'll be following this with interest.

Premium Bonds

HappyParent2000 · 21/08/2019 21:49

They won’t remember and it will be gone by the time they are 4.

witheringrowan · 21/08/2019 21:50

She'll be more interested in the wrapping paper or box that the present comes in at this stage!

My godmother gave me a charm bracelet when I was one and a new charm every birthday after that, which is a lovely thing to have to look back on now. Otherwise, books are a safe choice for that age - this is a decent list for a starting point.

Any Julia Donaldson book

Ask the parents

APipkinOfPepper · 21/08/2019 21:51

Maracas! My DCs favourite first birthday present, they are in every photo of the day!!

NewMum54321 · 21/08/2019 21:51

I've bought most of my nieces and nephews a Clarke's voucher for their first birthdays. And accompanied by a personalised box that says "NAMES first shoes" on it (you can pick these up relatively cheap from Etsy)

Oakmaiden · 21/08/2019 21:52

A cardboard box.

Hours of fun...

HateIsNotGood · 21/08/2019 21:54

Was going to say bits of paper but see oaken has pretty much beat me to it.

Teacakeandalatte · 21/08/2019 21:57

Large bar of chocolate and a bottle of Gin. Mum will have to dispose of these inappropriate gifts safely.

www.myriadonline.co.uk/product/cotton-ball-balloon-cover/

Have bought this for many small kids over the years.

Always goes down well with them
(and their parents, as contains any burst balloon bits safely within. So no choking risk / non-noisy/ lasts forever).

If she's the sort of child that has plenty of presents, toys etc, premium bonds is a really good idea. At worst, she'll have a tiny nest egg for when she is older, and there's a tiny chance it'll make her quite a wealthy woman.

Definitely worth considering rather than yet more toys, clothes etc that she won't know or care about.

I've also bought young nieces and nephews nice ceramic moneyboxes, which is another 'saving for the future' prod because many very young DC really don't need any extra 'things' and won't know or care whether they do or don't. If you want to get them a physical thing, there's probably little teether toys or similar in the pound shop or a supermarket.

Utini · 21/08/2019 22:02

The best present we bought for DD when she turned one was some Bigjigs wooden farm animal magnets. She loved putting them on and taking them off. As she got older she liked to identify them, make the noises, laugh at them being upside down... Hours of fun!

Other favourites at that age or slightly older were toys she could push or pull around, such as her walker and toy pushchair.

cheeseislife8 · 21/08/2019 22:05

I'd say anything colourful and tactile, like blocks, sensory play stuff etc. The parents may not thank you if it's a very noisy toy though Grin

edwinbear · 21/08/2019 22:09

Oh my God I know the answer

This, every baby LOVES to post stuff, this, every baby loves this:

Wilko’s do wooden food that you can ‘cut up’ with a wooden knife. My godson’s mum asked for it and he loves it. They do lots of good wooden toys.

@edwinbear Thank you! I’m definitely getting that got my little girl for Christmas!

My Dd is nearly 5 and still plays every day with the Happy Land toys from Early Learning Centre. She was bought the Cherry Tree Cottage for her first birthday and its still her favourite toy!

We've added to her collection by buying lots of second hand stuff on Gumtree/Ebay etc. it's not really worn and is good quality.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 21/08/2019 22:21

I like Osborne noisy books

If your budget is bigger then that's around the age they start playing with bigger toys like one of the trikes that can be pushed or any ride along toy or sea saw. Second hand stuff is good and reduces waste and you can get stuff rrp 50 quid for a tenner on facebook...but I guess for a first birthday you might not want to do that!

ooooohbetty · 21/08/2019 22:22

The best present I ever bought a one year old was a wooden walker with coloured wooden blocks in it. It still gets played with five years later.
