My goddaughter is one this month. I don't have kids and don't know any other kids. What sort of thing do one year old babies like?

Thanks everyone! I can't buy her premium bonds, only a parent or guardian can do that.

I love that little rocker, sleepis, but it says suitable for 6 months - will she be too old for it.

They won’t remember and it will be gone by the time they are 4. Genuinely cannot work out what I'm supposed to do with this comment. Not buy her birthday or Christmas presents until she remembers and is willing to keep them forever and a day?

A toy piano/keyboard; Happyland characters or a push along car/train/unicorn/horse.

Dippypippy1980 · 21/08/2019 22:26

This is age when my daughter got her ride on toys. She still plays with the little tikes coupe!

Or a couple of books and you can write a nice subscription inside. My daughter loves reading little notes my family have written to her over the years on the inside cover of her books.

NChangingAgain · 21/08/2019 22:29

You can buy premium bonds OP - they changed the rules recently so anyone inc family friends can buy bonds in a child's name. Definitely the best present you can buy her and the only thing which will last. To be honest you could do this for her do every birthday - she'll be grateful when she's older!

Books. I remember someone asking me what to get my Dd for her first birthdayamd I said her favourite thing at the moment is books. She loved sitting with me and reading them.

edwinbear · 21/08/2019 22:32

@PurpleFlower1983 she will ❤️ it Smile

My one year old adores:

Blocks
Anything where you put one thing inside another thing (so he would adore that postbox)
Bubbles
Books

I think a book is a great present because you can write a little note in it for the future, but they're also cheap enough that you can also get another loud/bright/slotted thing to cater to their current magpie tendencies!

NewAccount270219 · 21/08/2019 22:34

Bonus point for a book with flaps/moving parts!

NewAccount270219 · 21/08/2019 22:35

Am genuinely a bit annoyed that I didn't know that postbox toy existed for his birthday (two months ago) - he might get a 'happy september' present!

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 21/08/2019 22:36

Yes Julia Donaldson book
We like Wake up Do Lydia Lou

Ooo I didn't know that about Premium Bonds. This still puts me odd a bit though - The purchaser will need to nominate one of the child’s parents or guardians to look after the bonds until the child turns 16. The nominated parent or guardian will then be sent the bond record, any prizes won, and any payment for cashed-in bonds.

My baby will be one at the end of October. He has lots of toys but honestly has very little interest in them. He prefers the remote control, keys, bottles, paper...

I think the annual membership to a local attraction is a fantastic idea or just a failsafe Amazon voucher would be good. I’m sure the baby already has lots of toys. You can never go wrong with books tbf.

RoundOf · 21/08/2019 22:44

And yet at Christmas time my friend was a bit upset (not very upset, just confused I suppose) that the baby got a lot of clothes or things she couldn't use until she was older or keepsakes, but not many toys.

Oh and I bought them for him and will probably buy him the 'piano' for Christmas, I'm a glutton for punishment

Polestar50 · 21/08/2019 23:07

This Boing ball is brilliant
www.jellycat.com/boing-balls/?order=BESTSELLING&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7YSwifuU5AIVBbTtCh29-Az6EAAYASAAEgJt7vD_BwE

My MIL gave our 1 year old one and he loves it. It rolls, bounces a little and 'boings' a lot. Perfect squishy surface for little hands to grasp. Safe to throw. Not too expensive.
They have also managed to find a sound that is fun for babies without being irritating as hell for the parents.

ifoundthebread · 21/08/2019 23:12

My dd received tomy eggs for her first birthday, she is now 4 and still plays with them aswell as my ds 1. Weebles are still a winner in my house also, we have loads: paw patrol, peppa pig, farmyard animals, tellytubbies. We also love books, my ds currently likes 'never touch a monster/shark'.

ifoundthebread · 21/08/2019 23:13

I've bought so many of these for various friends'/family children and they were all very gratefully (or very politely!) received.

FurrySlipperBoots · 21/08/2019 23:32

I've been looking after little ones for 14 years and never known anyone between the ages of 9 months and 4 years who didn't love the Pop Up Men!

We had a post box which my toddler loved so that is a great suggestion. The JoJo one is gorgeous. Sorting toys go down well st this age as well. A doll was my daughter’s favourite present for her 1st bday. Ive got so many lovely videos of her looking after her baby while she was still a baby herself. She was quite early for role play stuff though so depending on the child, possibly an idea for Christmas.

ChillyB · 21/08/2019 23:43

My DS turned one last week. Big hits presents wise have been the leapfrog picnic basket, grimms rainbow stacking bowls, a car and some blocks, a chad valley elephant that pops balls out of its trunk, a personalised tool box, jigsaws and many many books.

We got him the Papier “things we wish for you” personalised book which is just lovely especially as the boy character has been personalised to look like him too.

Toy wise I’d probably get a grimms rainbow as the birthday gift - so much potential for play with these and will be loved for a long time. Even when it’s stopped being played with it will make a lovely decoration. Who doesn’t like rainbows afterall?

CrispSandwiches19 · 21/08/2019 23:49

Pass for a day out..
My dd had loads of money for her 1st. We used it for an annual. Pass to a local attraction.. She loves it and we go very regularly so def had moneys worth.

If not my dd also loved her 'beat bo'

pestov · 21/08/2019 23:59

Dd got a fancy walker but Ds started walking at 9 months so is well beyond that at 1. For a smallish budget there have been lots of good suggestions already... eggs, poppy men, beatbo, rocking horse, shape sorters, books. But his absolute number 1 toy at the moment is the play kitchen. We bought it second hand for DDs 2nd birthday but my God that boy can spend hours opening and closing the doors, banging the pans, waving the wooden spoon around.... do check with her parents if you're going big though!
