To ask what a one year old wants for birthday?

My goddaughter is one this month. I don't have kids and don't know any other kids. What sort of thing do one year old babies like?

Just ask the parents!

One of my son's favourite first birthday presents was a hideous plastic play table thing that played music and made sounds when he pressed various buttons. I would never have bought it and found it annoying but he loved it so it was a win!

Ride ons are also excellent toys because they get so much use out of them. I bought DS a scramblebug not long after his first birthday and he still uses it more than a year later. So it was good value compared to other more expensive toys that didn't get used.

We got DS a play kitchen for Christmas when he was 1y9m. He would have been too young for it when he turned one, I think.

Scramblebug for £28 on Amazon (bargain!)

I second the idea of premium bonds or a contribution towards her future savings, my DS was lucky enough to get loads of presents but most of it became ‘clutter’ and there are only so many toys/books/clothes that a child needs.

He’s now 18 and is really happy that he has some fairly substantial savings from financial gifts over the years at a time when many of his friends are struggling with only a few £s in their savings account (if they even have one). I don’t know your budget but £25 twice a year will be nearly £1k when your god daughter reaches her 18th birthday, add in gifts from other people and you could have a nice little sum - a lot more if her premium bonds win Grin.

The present is for the parents really! What would them like/need? Nice touch geeky books are always good, kids love the ones where you can trace your fingers along andmlift the flaps or feel texture.
My friend go DS a pair of mini converse high tops at that age and I loved them as they were so cute but there’s not way I would have wasted £25 on shoes like that for a toddler!

Not geeky books

  • geeky books!

Feely. FFs.

DD is now two. Things she still plays with from a year ago: Tomy Hide n Squeak Eggs, Hape Baby Einstein piano, subscription to local toddler play place.

EssentialHummus · 22/08/2019 07:15

Otherwise Clarks vouchers or a Noisy... book get my vote. We love Noisy Orchestra with all the animals playing instruments.

That postbox is AMAZING. DD is only 6m but I've saved the link already. I can't wait to play with it Grin

Another vote for Premium Bonds

Or ask the parents to open an account and make a deposit on each occasion. A nice next egg for the future.

My parents gave me nine when I left home. Very welcome surprise.

The postbox is great, and I particular enjoyed one of the reviews:

"Love this toy - bought for us as it is a 'wooden toy' - unfortunately the postcards that come with it are painted plastic. :(”

Mumsnetter? Grin

My DD got a smart trike for her first birthday. She loved it and still uses it now.

FurrySlipperBoots · 22/08/2019 10:21

@Fantababy

To be fair it has dropped several points in my estimation having learned that! I had been going to order it! I wonder why they didn't stick with wood?!

Witchinaditch · 22/08/2019 17:21

Books or clothes, babies don’t know about birthdays at 1. Most useful gifts for 1st bday were clothes in next size up for next season so I didn’t have to buy them new clothes. Books are always a hit also.

Junior ISAs are much better than Premium bonds. Perhaps contribute towards that if your friend has an account.
