To refreeze chicken?

Months ago I bought a meat back online which came with 2x2.5kg of chicken breasts. The plan was to freeze everything.

Unfortunately when the parcel arrived I was in the throes of a horrific virus. I could barely get down the stairs and couldn't stand for more than a few seconds. As the plan was to freeze everything I managed to drag a chair in front of the freezer and bung everything in.

Everything came pre packaged i.e. two burgers in a pack, 6 sausages etc. Except the chicken. They came in 2 bags which in my fogged ill state I just bunged in the freezer without separating. stupid

Now I'm stuck with chicken in the freezer which if I defrost I'm stuck with. There's only two of us, and approx 10-12 chicken breast per bag. If I cooked some (half?) Can I then refreeze them without killing us? Otherwise half will go to waste Sad

I wouldn't defrost and then refreeze raw chicken.

I'd defrost and then batch cook several chicken dishes and then freeze the meals in portions so that the chicken wouldn't go to waste.

Picklypickles · 21/08/2019 14:36

No, don't do that!

kitk · 21/08/2019 14:36

You can refreeze chicken once cooked, but not defrost raw and refeeeze raw

AmIThough · 21/08/2019 14:37

No definitely don't refreeze but do as PP's say and batch cook meals then freeze those!

Cwtches123 · 21/08/2019 14:38

Definitely don't refreeze raw chicken!
Perfectly fine to cook it and then freeze it.

Boom45 · 21/08/2019 14:38

Don't defrost and then re-freeze chicken heightens the risk if food poisoning. Defrost the lot, cook half for one tea and then make a curry/stew or something with the other half and then freeze that

RatherBeRiding · 21/08/2019 14:38

Never defrost and refreeze raw chicken! Rather than waste it can you, as suggested, batch cook it?

Scoobygang7 · 21/08/2019 14:39

Stick frozen package in a carrier and slam from height on the floor. Should break the breasts from each other. Might take a few goes tho.

TheViceOfReason · 21/08/2019 14:39

Defrost, cook the lot, then refreeze as separate frozen cooked portions. You can then defrost and just add cooked chicken to pasta, omelette, sandwiches, fajitas, curry etc

Scentsandsensible · 21/08/2019 14:43

I had something similar - bought something ridiculous like 20 large breasts of chicken which al ended up “stuck together”.

Ended up spending an entire Saturday cooking chicken curry, stuffed chicken, breaded chicken, chicken etc and then froze the lot once cooked.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/08/2019 14:43

I freeze and defrost raw chicken all the time and nothing bad has happened, ever.

You just don't leave it lying around in the warm, but once it's partially defrosted and you can separate the breasts so you can pack them up in smaller bags and refreeze them. That's what I would do.

Or you could certainly cook the chicken and freeze it if you want, but I find that it goes a bit dry if you do that.

Aprillygirl · 21/08/2019 14:46

You can refreeze the chicken once cooked no problem OP.

whatisforteamum · 21/08/2019 14:49

Chef here don't refreeze unless u want another horrific illness. As previous ppl have said try bashing pack is half..don't use a sharp knife though.
Chalk it up to experience as you were ill.

gamerchick · 21/08/2019 14:59

Ah OP I did exactly the same with I think was a muscle food package.just slung it in without seperating.

Take it out, defrost, cook and freeze again in portions. It's the only thing you can do unless you give it away.

Sparklfairy · 21/08/2019 15:03

Yeah sorry I worded it badly! I meant cook half and then freeze it once cooked! Good to know I won't die Grin the rest can stay defrosted to eat over a few days Grin thanks!
