To feel like this?

The week before my period I feel so low, like in the depths of depression low - just trying to work out if this is normal PMS?! It’s definitely got worse over the last few years.

I can barely get out of bed, sob consistently, either eat loads or nothing at all, and during some days I get really dark thoughts about ending it all. Every little thing sets me off and I feel like I lose all control.

So as not to dripfeed, I do have borderline personality disorder so don’t know if that’s anything to do with it? I’ve been managing those symptoms for quite a few years and do really well (other than the occasional outburst) but the dark thoughts I get only ever seem to be around 5-8 days before my period.

Please tell me if this is normal?! I have no trusted females in my life to ask really.

Oh that sounds really awful. The week before my period I lose all motivation, have a mini ‘what am I doing with my life’ crisis, give up healthy eating etc. I have a friend who works her work schedule around her cycle, doing not much/ a lot of working from home the week before her period.

So I’m sure it is A Thing. But yours seems rather extreme, I’d see if the docs can give you something to help balance things out - perhaps you have an extra severe dip or rise in whatever hormone it is Flowers

Ah yes I forgot about the ‘what am I doing with my life’ crisis! This tends to be the time I want to quit my business that I run, fire everyone and move to another country. Will add that to the list of godawful PMS symptoms.

I am self employed too (loosely, I don’t do much 😄) and it takes me a week to get back on track after each period, so I really do lose half the time. So I’m working half as fast as I could be really if it wasn’t for the hormones. And now i could slip into a rant about male privilege 😄
I have thought about starting this thread for a while so thanks for that OP, glad it’s not just me! But I really think you ought to see if your doctor can help, because you can’t live like this every month.

BogglesGoggles · 21/08/2019 14:00

I have exactly the same. The week before everything is hopeless and everyone might as well just kill themseelves. Also gave very poor concentration/cognitive function. No other mental health conditions now/ever and not on any medication that can effect mood etc. I don’t know how normal it is but totally sympathise.

On one hand i am so glad it’s not just me but on the other it’s such BS that we have to go through these things. After several attempts at trying to sort out other reproductive health things with the doctor and being pawned off, can’t imagine I’ll get much help with this!

@Pmsblows, you might want to look into PMDD, premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Bambamber · 22/08/2019 00:31

I second looking into PMDD
