Nursery breakfast

Do I need to unclench? Dropped lo off for breakfast. They had one box of chocolate hoop cereal out. He goes three times a week. Each morning it's a chocolate based breakfast. At home he always has bran flakes, porridge ext with fruit. I'd rather just give him eggs but he has an allergy. It just doesn't sit right with me. But then I think it's only 3 days a week Confused

I'd have a problem with this. Why are they giving them chocolate?! Confused

I'd speak to whoever is in charge.

diet4eva · 20/08/2019 08:12

Sounds very lazy to me. I would expect fruit and toast and maybe some whole grain cereal like weetabix

Squirrelonwheels · 20/08/2019 08:13

I wouldn’t be keen on that either - our nursery has a choice of weetabix/shreddies/another plainish wheat cereal. Do you feel comfortable enough to ask if there’s an alternative available? Tricky thing is the kids will probably choose the chocolate one if it’s there I guess! In the grand scheme of things I agree that 3 mornings a week won’t make too much difference though 😊

OwlinaTree · 20/08/2019 08:14

Give him breakfast before you take him. Or send him with bran flakes a few times, they'll probably buy a box.

IceRebel · 20/08/2019 08:15

I would be very surprised if they only had the one choice of cereal, even more so a chocolate one. Usually nurseries offer toast as an alternative to cereals, perhaps you could ask that DS has that instead?

kaytee87 · 20/08/2019 08:16

I wouldn't be happy about this. He's basically getting junk for breakfast 3 times a week.

Coconutbug · 20/08/2019 08:16

I wouldn't be happy with that, I don't agree with chocolate cereals in the morning. There's so many other choices they can have

CalmdownJanet · 20/08/2019 08:18

No I wouldn't be happy but I admit I hate chocolate cereals with a passion and refuse to buy them. I'm surprised they serve them at all

PlainJane74 · 20/08/2019 08:19

I think you’re all a bit precious and it’s a small bowl of cereal that all of his mates are having?
Not really setting him up for a lifetime of obesity letting him have some Wheetos is it? Definitely not going to rot his teeth if he has a good diet at home.

Teaching him everything in moderation is the best thing, surely?

AGenericUsername · 20/08/2019 08:20

DD's nursery gives them weetabix/Rice Krispies and toast then fruit as a snack in between breakfast and lunch. There's never any chocolate cereal. I don't think YABU to be unhappy about this. 1 morning I would probably let slide but not 3. I would have to say something.

TequilaMockingbird0 · 20/08/2019 08:23

I've never seen any chocolate cereal on offer at DCs nursery. Each day there are different options of toast/plain cereals/fruit/eggs. Sometimes they get bacon rolls as a nice treat. I wouldn't be happy with that at all, it's lazy and unnecessary when children can be fed so many other options for breakfast.
Surely it's cheaper for the nursery to buy regular cereal too rather than the chocolate novelty ones.

PullingMySocksUp · 20/08/2019 08:24

I’d be pretty unimpressed at that. Ours offered porridge, toast and fruit.

Waffles80 · 20/08/2019 08:26

YANBU. Totally, utterly inappropriate breakfast for any child.

Wildorchidz · 20/08/2019 08:26

What’s on the menu for the rest of the day? What were you told about meals/nutrition when you booked him in? And what is the chocolate cereal? Is it cheap own brand with palm oil?

PrincessScarlett · 20/08/2019 08:28

I would not be happy with this, can you have a word with the nursery manager. Surely they have a duty to provide healthy nutritious food.

LoubyLou1234 · 20/08/2019 08:29

None of the nurseries I worked at 15/20 years ago ever gave chocolate cereals. Always , cornflakes or rice crispies, toast or yoghurt. Find it weird with all the healthy eating policies and schemes nurseries can follow now that the eat chocolate cereal.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 20/08/2019 08:29

It's not "teaching him moderation" if it's all that's on offer and he has it three times a week, every week. I wouldn't be happy either, OP. Chocolate should be a once in a while treat, serving it for breakfast sends the message that it's an everyday food rather than an occasional treat.

GoGoGoGoGo · 20/08/2019 08:29

I wouldn’t be impressed with this. Our nursery only gave things like rice crispies, weetabix etc. Same with breakfast club at school.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/08/2019 08:31

I’d have a word- inappropriate from a nursery.

EmilyStar · 20/08/2019 08:31

It doesn’t sound having a chocolate cereal as the only option every day.

The nursery my DC used offered the children toast or cereal for breakfast. Choice of 2 cereals (decanted into those plastic see through containers) which usually looked plain IIRC.

TeacherDeMFL · 20/08/2019 08:33

@PlainJane74 I agree, parents are so precious these days

hairyturkey · 20/08/2019 08:34

That's bad. Cereals like that are packed full of sugar. I would speak to the manager.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 20/08/2019 08:35

The NHS counts any cereal higher than 5g in Sugar per 100g as a high sugar breakfast, they don’t recommend children have it.

I’d politely say that’s not something I’m happy with and can we offer something else. Chocolate cereal 3 out of 7 days is crap and sets an unnecessary precedent too early imo.

notsohippychick · 20/08/2019 08:36

I’m quite flexible about this kind of stuff but no this wouldn’t wash with me. My kids don’t need a chocolate based cereal. I’d ask for something else!

Waffles80 · 20/08/2019 08:39

@PlainJane74 and @TeacherDeMFL I can’t believe you think expressing concern about totally excessive sugar is “being precious”. You clearly have no understanding whatsoever of the impact of sugar on the body. There’s absolutely no need whatsoever for nursery children to be given sugary breakfasts - it’s harmful for their teeth, likely to create a taste for junk food and nutritionally devoid.
