Nursery breakfast

Do I need to unclench? Dropped lo off for breakfast. They had one box of chocolate hoop cereal out. He goes three times a week. Each morning it's a chocolate based breakfast. At home he always has bran flakes, porridge ext with fruit. I'd rather just give him eggs but he has an allergy. It just doesn't sit right with me. But then I think it's only 3 days a week Confused

I think three days a week I wouldn’t be too bothered - if it was all week I might be. I avoid giving chocolate based cereals at home on a regular basis - I save it for the weekend as I would a pain au chocolate or something like that. Given that we now have all this information on sugar I’m surprised the nursery still offers them.

Dandelion1993 · 20/08/2019 09:22

I wouldn't care.

My DDs nursery had three options and tbh, getting her sat down and eating so u could leave was the priority.

She's not overweight now and she doesn't have eating issues.

It's cereal.let it go.

DerelictWreck · 20/08/2019 09:24

Nursery food drives me up the wall. The one we were looking at gave a big spiel about healthy eating. Then I looked at their weekly menus and noticed that they get a proper pudding every day after lunch. Like sticky toffee pudding or cake or pie. not even a yogurt in sight. So unnecessary for 2-year-olds to have a pudding every day!

blueberrycheesecake1 · 20/08/2019 09:27

I would not be happy about this when there are plenty of other alternatives! It's teaching them to have a sweet tooth.

chocolatemademefat · 20/08/2019 09:28

Sorry am I on netmums? Get up earlier and give him breakfast at home. A few bits of chocolate cereal will hardly scar him for life. And as for does it contain palm oil! Get over yourselves - in a few years he’ll be cramming down the Mac Donald’s with the rest of his friends. Unclench and enjoy life.

Moominfan · 20/08/2019 09:34

Millie2017 that would be perfect 👌🏾

I'd comment. When my DC had nursery breakfast it was wholemeal toast with jam or plain cereal with milk and some chopped up fruit.

Moominfan · 20/08/2019 09:41

Chocolatemademefat your username though Grin don't want to be mean but this is what I'm avoiding, along with tooth decay.

I would be asking what nutritional guidelines they are following - I’m sorry but this is not a “treat” to have a chocolate based cereal 3 times a week and potentially 5 days for the full timers. Our nursery has shreddies, weetabix and cornflakes or rice crispies plus fruit and toast, hot meal at lunchtime and dinner time and a cold snack in the afternoon. These are the kind of treats that parents should be in control of, not the nursery.

HiJenny35 · 20/08/2019 10:04

How many kids have breakfast there? Was it the same box and they have a different typr each time and the reason why you've seen this one 3 times is because they are using it up? In which case I can't see any issue. Didn't you ask about the breakfasts and what food your child would be having before letting him have breakfast there?

sugarplumfairy28 · 20/08/2019 10:26

If it is the only option, then that's an issue. It's 3 times a week so it's not over kill especially if the rest of their diet is good.

Moominfan · 20/08/2019 10:33

It's own brand chocolate weetos. They all sit on a breakfast table and the cereal is poured out for them. Not given a choice.

Before he started we talked through food, they said they give cereals for breakfast and toast a few hours later.

I think the rest of the food is ok but not what I would choose to feed him. We tend to eat differently at home, but nothing has been as bad as chocolate cereal.

NoSauce · 20/08/2019 10:42

Just say you’d rather he have toast or weetabix etc and that you don’t want him having the chocolate cereal.

PlainJane74 · 20/08/2019 10:58

I do feel so much more informed about the gs of sugar in each cereal type and how much the Government and experts thinks my child should have in their daily diet. Knowledge is power and al of that.
But a bit of perspective here guys. It’s a bowl of cereal, 3 x a week, for a child who I’m guessing otherwise eats healthily. The outrage on this thread is a little bit funny Grin

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 20/08/2019 11:04

Am I the only person that doesn't give cereal at all to my toddler? I thought porridge was the default as it has no sugar at all whereas almost all boxed cereals do.

inwood · 20/08/2019 11:47

My kids are 8 and have never had chocolate cereal, I wouldn't be happy with it. Aside from the sugar it surely can't fill them up.

Emmabryant123 · 20/08/2019 11:51

Our nursery offer toast or weetabix and fruit

notastealthboast · 20/08/2019 11:52

What's on offer at lunch and tea?

cookiechomper · 20/08/2019 12:32

Some chocolate flavour cereals have less sugar than the plain varieties. I can't say this would bother me as long as they were offering healthy balanced meals throughout the day. I've also worked in a nursery in the past and sometimes Coco Pops were an option, but there was also toast and other cereals to choose from.

viques · 20/08/2019 12:43

Lazy catering.

Why don't they offer sliced cheese, ham, sliced boiled eggs, beans on toast, yogurt and fruit? Not all together obviously! All things that are easily prepared, require no cooking and are just as nutritious ,if not more so, as chocolate cereal and are encouraging children to eat a wide range of foods.

notastealthboast · 20/08/2019 12:47

I thought part of complying with ofsted was to supply healthy food? Do they advertise their menus online?

user1480880826 · 20/08/2019 12:49

That’s a terrible thing to give a child for breakfast. Totally unnecessary amount of sugar. You really should say something. I can’t imagine the other parents being particularly happy about it either. Has it always been so unhealthy? I would be having a good look at what they eat the rest of the day too if I were you.

My child’s nursery serves a choice of weetabix, cornflakes or branflakes and toast.

Camomila · 20/08/2019 12:53

I wouldn't be happy, I'd expect nurseries to follow the same nutritional guidelines as schools.
Plus some DC have most/all their weekly meals at nursery.

tappitytaptap · 20/08/2019 12:57

I'm pretty relaxed about this sort of thing but it doesn't sit right with me either. I'm happy for it to be the occasional treat but not several times a week. Our nursery does weetabix/shreddies/cheerios, and I know in the baby room when DS wasn't a cereal fan they'd give him toast as well/instead. So no, I don't think you are BU.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 20/08/2019 13:01

well if the parents put them on a diet outside nursery I don’t see the issue

Parents shouldn't have to put their small children on a diet to make up for them being fed junk at nursery! There's nothing "precious" about wanting your child to have a healthy diet and expecting the settings paid to look after them to give a shit about their health too. If they think chocolate cereal is an acceptable breakfast then the chances are the lunch, snack and tea options aren't going to be healthy either.
