Aibu to be sick of people saying my baby is huge

Mynotsolittlemonkey · 18/08/2019 21:40

So my baby is 7 weeks old today. He is absolutely perfect and the picture of a happy healthy baby which everyone agrees with. However I am sick of people commenting on how huge he is, how we should put him on a diet etc. Mostly it is said in jest but it's starting to wear thin. I'm aware he is big but he is also healthy and I think he is actually long not just 'fat'.

He doesn't look like a 7 week old, he looks about 3 months and it makes me sad he is growing so fast which isn't helped by these comments. Today in the supermarket a lady asked how old he was and when I said she told me I was feeding him too much?!

I've also been told he will be a big boy and that I'll need to watch he isn't obese :-( I'm so worried that when he is older he will be bullied or something for being big which I know is ridiculous! Has anyone had a big baby that has evened out as they grew?

He was born 9 pounds and is now just over a stone. He is on the 94th or 95th percentile I cant remember which.

He is bf exclusively and mil has said I'll have to wean him early as that won't satisfy him until 6 months? I'm a bit cautious of anything she says tbh as we have a terrible relationship and she has already tried to give him a bottle so she could have him to stay.

Aibu ? I'm probably being over sensitive! To me he is just perfect :-)

Ignore ignore ignore

DD was the opposite - 5.4lb and totey.

People used to screech "OMG how premature was she?" into the pram. She wasn't.

She's 6, lanky, skinny and barely walks anywhere - cartwheeling and dancing and skipping and running. I can't keep up with her.

She wasn't even on the chart; -0.4 centile and predicted to be same height as me (5'3). She's up to my boobs already. Had to go to John Lewis when she was 2 days old to get tiny baby baby grows because she was too small to fit any of the 2 - 3 month stuff I'd bought.... it was like trying to dress an octopus.

Out-take: babies are babies and they will find their own way to be. A baby on a diet seems like madness to me. And congrats Flowers

Whattodo20192 · 19/08/2019 05:03

If people comment on your child saying he is big for his age just politely say that he was a big baby when he was born. That explains why he is bigger than average now and they won't even question you overfeeding him.
That's what I do anyway and nobody has ever questioned me overfeeding my big babies. And when I say big, my 2 month old is like a 6 month old size wise. He was almost 11lb when born and is on the 99th percentile now. Never had a comment on how much I'm feeding him.

OhioOhioOhio · 19/08/2019 06:22

Omg. I used to get this all of the time. I remember all the mums in the ward being excited because their daughters had put on a miniscule amount of weight.

Nabana · 19/08/2019 06:23

My DS was 8lbs 6oz when he was born, not tiny but I don't think particularly huge either. I was baffled in hospital when staff would comment how big he was! All I could see was a tiny newborn lol. He was my first so I guess I had nothing to compare him to but still.

I'm sure you're baby is perfect op and will even out. My friend has a baby who is big for his age and I think he is perfect and absolutely adorable and gorgeously, nothing wrong with big babies and they don't all stay big for their age x

transformandriseup · 19/08/2019 06:24

My EBF baby was on the 91st percentile for weight at 2.5 months and now she has dropped to the 75th at 3.5 months. I definitely wouldn’t listen to your MIL although she is just probably going on advise from 20+ years back.

AJPTaylor · 19/08/2019 06:26

Dd3 was 9lb at birth. She was on the 98th line for length.
She is now 11. And 5'5" and weighs 8st.
Throughout her childhood she had looked 2 years older than she is.

icelollycraving · 19/08/2019 06:29

Ds was 9.7lbs when he was born. He also looked more developed and people were shocked by his age.
I was always conscious of people saying he was chubby etc, and remember asking the practice nurse to not say he was so chubby which was awkward Blush She absolutely thought pfb. I said you wouldn’t say to my face I’m chubby (I am) so please don’t say that to Ds.
Ds was high in centiles but started to slim out as he became more active. He’s perfectly proportioned at 8, very sporty.
If people say you are over feeding a baby, they are mad. You aren’t giving him cheeseburgers!!
I miss the baby stage, snuffle that lovely baby whilst you can Flowers

Dandelion1993 · 19/08/2019 06:30

My second was born in Feb at 9lb 3oz.

Even now people comment 9n how big she is and it wind's me up.

I know she's bigger than others but ffs she's also beautiful, clever and really developing well with a fab little personality.

It's just highlighted to me how size obsessed society is, even with babies.

Dirtyjellycat · 19/08/2019 06:33

I have the opposite experience to you. I’m very tall and my DS is 2nd centile. People have always assumed he’s much younger than he is and ask if I’m feeding him enough. In the beginning it used to worry me, then annoy me but now, if anyone says something I just say, ‘
Are you implying I’m not looking after my son properly?’

It soon shuts people up.

Enjoy your beautiful baby Flowers

Winterlife · 19/08/2019 06:35

Son 2 was 9 lbs 9 oz. He was also huge. He had fat little legs with rolls. Everyone in the family thought his legs were cute. He skimmed down around age 3. He was at the taller end of students through school, medium weight. Now, he is a 6 foot 22 year old who weighs about 130 lbs soaking wet.

Bottom line-I wouldn’t worry about his current size. Enjoy him. Smile

Ithinkmycatisevil · 19/08/2019 06:38

Don’t listen to them. People used to tell me how massive dd1 was all the time. My own mother was the worst! Actually had me worried there was something wrong with her!

She was on the 75th centile at birth, but quickly went up to the 91st. She just gained weight so quickly. I honestly can’t remember what she was at 12 weeks, but can remember that at 7 months she weighed 19lb, which dd2 didn’t weigh until 13 months.

As soon as she got on the move at around 8 months though she started to slim down a bit. At 14 she is about 5ft5.5, slim and beautiful. Dd2 is actually bigger built and she was a much smaller baby.

My friends boy, who was probably even bigger than dd1 as a baby, is now a tall skinny 13 year old.

A chubby baby is just that a chubby baby. It does not mean that you’ll have to watch what they eat in the future, or that there’ll be anything at all to worry about. Just enjoy your little man.

MRex · 19/08/2019 06:47

Babies are proportionally fatter when they're young and they gradually slim down as they move. Bigger babies can often look fatter until late toddlerhood, because proportionally they actually are fatter than an average baby of their length, people just don't realise how much those proportions change during the first two years. As long as he's healthy don't restrict milk. DS is very tall and breastmilk was more than enough for him, the tiny bits of veg and fruit we let him try before 6 months wouldn't make any difference.

fantasmasgoria1 · 19/08/2019 06:49

My babies were large one being 9lbs. They looked a few months old at birth! My friends largest was 12lbs! I used to get comments on the weight but I just ignored them.

Sceptre86 · 19/08/2019 06:57

My boy was 8lb 10oz at 40 weeks and on the 91 st percentile for his weight. He stayed there till a year old and has now dropped to just above 75. They do change so he might not continue on this trajectory but so what if he does? My ds was bottle fed and I had no plans to wean him before 6 months however at 5 months he swiped a handful of pasta off my plate and munched it. He was ready so we did start a bit earlier than recommended. Let your baby guide you and keep on as you are x

Sexnotgender · 19/08/2019 06:57

I know EXACTLY how you feel. My boys a chunk and is 6.5 months now. Every single person would go “ ooh he’s massive” when they saw him.

Weirdly he is only between 50/75 centiles. Has followed that line since birth and is EBF. People just like to comment. It’s odd.

Surfskatefamily · 19/08/2019 07:01

It's not very nice comments. If I got ones that were a bit off I'd just say 'i love my chunky healthy boy'
My 17montg old is pretty even out now, just tall now.

My lil neice is an absolute chunk tho and we do say it tho lovingly. Like
'what a gorgeous chunk of love you are' etc

firstimemamma · 19/08/2019 07:04

It was like this with my baby op, you are not alone! I also got a couple of ignorant 'feeding him too much' comments even though he was exclusively bf. No real advice, sorry. Thanks

Preggosaurus9 · 19/08/2019 07:28

The people commenting on your baby sound like absolute idiots. MIL can butt out with her stupid comments especially! Tell her to fuck off, she's had her turn being a mum and now it's your turn, you get to make the decisions on what's right for YOUR BABY!

My DS was a massive chunk, ebf, I was so proud of having such a massive chunky baby! I was so relieved never having to worry about his weight gain, unlike my friends with "normal" babies who would get grief from the health visitors and agonise over the weight charts. DS is now a totally average 2.5yo, still built very solidly but well within normal range for weight and height. Like adults, there's a range of body types for children. Don't give it another thought. Enjoy your chunky baby!

user12345796 · 19/08/2019 07:29

My ebf baby also gained a pound a week between weeks 6-12 and wore 6 month clothes. Slim toddler, slim child, slim teenager, slim young adult (although he is 6'4")

Motherontheedge1 · 19/08/2019 07:32

My son was just under 7 pounds when he was born but very long. The health visitor said straight away he’s going to be a big boy make sure people don’t think he’s older than he is and expect too much from him. He was always head and shoulders above the rest of his peer group. I remember going to a birthday party with him and someone asking how old he was. When I said three they were amazed and had thought he was about five. I never over fed him and gave him healthy meals but he had times when I worried he was getting fat but then he would have a growth spurt and shoot up and be fine again. I also worried he was going to be so tall life would be difficult for him. He’s now 21 and a 6 foot three rugby player. He’s not overweight and he’s not even overly tall. In fact he was in the academy of a professional club who wanted him to put on some weight. I was like you. Worried about him constantly. As for the comment makers they need to mind their own business and stop being so rude.

CharlieBoo · 19/08/2019 07:34

I used to get this with ds (he’s 14 now)... he was on 90th centile and was very chunky... once he started moving it all evened out... don’t worry and ignore...

Loudlady34 · 19/08/2019 07:49

It's normal to have different body shapes and sizes, even from a baby, but people seem to forget that. No 2 people are the same!!
I had the opposite with my daughter, she was 6lb 8oz at birth, and grew steadily along her curve on the 9th percentile, which she is still in now so perfect for her. As a baby she always had skinny arms and legs and her skin seemed too big for her!! But she is beautifully in proportion.

amysaurus87 · 19/08/2019 07:50

I get this, but the other way! My LB is pretty dinky for his age. He's 16 months still in 6-9 month clothes and only weighs 19lb.

I just ignore people when they tell me he looks really small and that I need to feed him more.

KittyWindbag · 19/08/2019 07:53

People always told me how big my baby was and I would always reply that I was so proud of him, how he was going to grow up to be so lovely and tall. People have very few comments to make about babies and some people seem to like making pass agg comments, as if they enjoy winding up new anxious mothers. Develop a skin of steel and brush it off. All their opinions are meaningless.

federationrep · 19/08/2019 07:57

I had this with my DS. He was over 9lb birth weight. When he was in hospital at 4 months with a raging temperature and they couldn't work out what was causing it the consultant gave him ibuprofen based on his weight rather than age and it brought it right back down. He's 13 now, 5' 7" (I think that's about average judging by his friends) and I've seen more meat on a butcher's pencil. Some people just like to have an opinion when it comes to babies, he's big, she's tiny, oh he's a right baldy, is she warm enough etc etc. Nod & smile
