AIBU to want to keep Sky TV?

First world problems and all that, but...

We are trying to save money and DH suggested cancelling Sky.

I don't want to because:

  • We always stack up programmes to watch as 'box sets' as a couple.
  • I am an early riser so often record in the evening to watch before everyone else is up.
  • We just have a basic package so would be saving only a (relatively) small amount.
  • We are lucky enough that we don't need to save the money, we just want to divert more into holidays/work on the house etc.

AIBU to keep it?

I stopped SKY and just use netflix, Amazon prime and iplayer but do miss not being able to record (got the free channels still) after reading this thread I will get a Humax box!

BarbaraofSeville · 19/08/2019 06:37

The fabled £3.20 with NowTV is only for a few months. You pay £7 for the first month then when you cancel, it offers you £3.20 for three months

And you get to the end of the three months and you tell them you want to cancel again and they offer you another deal.

Or you look out for supermarket offers where they do 20% off already discounted cards to pay for the subscription. I bought 6 months worth from Morrisons at £4 per month earlier this year.

Sometimes you can buy an introductory package that includes a new box and a few months subscription where it works out at maybe a fiver a month even if you value the new box at £0. You can use the box, sell it for a few quid on eBay, freecycle it, whatever.

We've had NowTV for about 5 years and paid full price for less than 6 months in that time. It's probably averaged at less than half price.

Toomanycats99 · 19/08/2019 06:48

Always ring sky and cancel. You get 28 days notice. Then around 3 weeks in call them and you will get a much better deal. If you aren't worried about keeping your box let it cancel and am sure you will get an even better one. That said this year I actually renewed at same price as last year on my first call which is very unlike them.......they contracted me for 18 months not 12 so maybe that's why but I am happy with that as didn't want the hassle of calling every year. I pay £56 for sky q with second box in another room, fibre broadband unlimited, phone line and all phone calls.

RafaelAndJane · 19/08/2019 06:48

A cheap way to do this is to cycle through the various providers one at a time and binge watch in turn.

So sign up to Netflix - binge watch Netflix shows for a few months, and cancel. Then sign up to Amazon Prime for a few months, binge watch that, then cancel. Then Now TV for a few months, then watch your free smart TV apps for a few months - BBC iPlayer, 4 on demand, etc. - then back to Netflix, and so on.

That way you only ever pay a few £ a month, but you get to watch Sky/Now, Netflix & Amazon.

sunshinedaisydo · 19/08/2019 06:49

We've had full sky package for years and never pay very much - usually around £25-30 per month. SkyQ is great too. No one should be paying £100 - call them and say you want to cancel and they will give you a deal.

Humax/nowTV is a good alternative but I find those platforms REALLY cumbersome and clunky compared to sky.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 19/08/2019 06:52

Humax box.
You can record all the free view channels. Uses a dish so no need for a superb internet connection.
I do have netflix, and prime video; more as an incidental of Amazon prime delivery.

Longlivepenguins · 19/08/2019 06:53

I don't have a TV, sky, humax or anything else. I'm either a) missing something really important or b) saving a bloody fortune! I have a good broadband connection but I've not watched a film in years because they are mostly shite or propaganda. Amirite?!

DerbyRacer · 19/08/2019 06:59

I have just left sky. It felt like a huge decision to leave especially as they offered to reduce the price. I have bought the recordable youview boxes for every room with a TV. It also has apps for all the catch up channels, Netflix, prime. Now. I prefer it to my sky HD box. I am much happier.

Rarfy · 19/08/2019 06:59

I'd cancel. Its dp that keeps us signed up he's sport mad.

Polgara2 · 19/08/2019 07:00

As someone asked - does Nowtv have subtitles? I find the likes of iplayer etc frustrating and unwatchable because they don't.

Oblomov19 · 19/08/2019 07:01

Dh has Sky because he is football mad. We cancel occasionally and pay £50 a month.

sounds like a lot but when you add up all the different bits: the pp is paying Netflix this £18 here £15 there, I don't think it's that bad a deal.

and we literally can't get the football anywhere else, so we are held to ransom.

plus I love all the HBO : Big Little lies types series.

Celebelly · 19/08/2019 07:01

@ChipsAreLife

The F1 pass gives you exactly the same stuff that's on F1 channel! It's literally the same channel. I think it was £195 for the season pass. It actually gives access to all the Sky sports channels. But the deal only runs for like two months before season starts.

RJnomore1 · 19/08/2019 07:02

Who said they had sky sports for cheaper on now? It’s £33.99 a month?

Being a bloody football fan is expensive. You need sky, bt AND premier to watch all the Scottish games. If it wasn’t for football I reckon I’d cancel sky but there is nowhere cheaper for sports (we have tried and tried believe me) especially when you factor in a don’t leave discount (although they are not what they used to be).

Sandybval · 19/08/2019 07:02

Now TV, google for discount codes and you can usually get sky movies and the entertainment package for around a tenner a month.

Celebelly · 19/08/2019 07:05

@Polgara2 Some stuff does, some stuff doesn't. It's very much programme dependent.

stucknoue · 19/08/2019 07:10

Have you called them? I called 2 months ago and managed to save £35 a month by getting a different package (the only thing I stopped was unlimited calls, we have mobiles now!)

YouLookGood · 19/08/2019 07:20

@RJnomore1 It’s £200 for the season pass so £20 a month.

RJnomore1 · 19/08/2019 07:21

Is that only football though?

We mainly have it for football but watch other sports (boxing etc)

If it’s genuinely £20 a month for all sky sports channels I’ll mention it to dh.

nononever · 19/08/2019 07:43

We renegotiate our Sky contract every time it's up for renewal and always get a decent price. At the start of the season we got the F1 channel for 10 quid a month for two years. We stopped unlimited calls too on our phone line.

YouLookGood · 19/08/2019 07:43

Actually, while the promotional page over at Now TV is mainly shouting about the footy aspect of this 10-month pass, you actually get all 11 Sky Sports channels. This includes Premier League, Football, F1, Racing, Cricket, Golf, Sky Sports News, Mix, Action, Arena and Main Event

ethelfleda · 19/08/2019 07:51

Watching with interest!

Floralnomad · 19/08/2019 09:04

The Now £200 deal is just for specific football matches , not all the Sky sports channels . Football is probably the only sport I don’t watch except for the World Cup .

YouLookGood · 19/08/2019 09:49

It is for all Sky Sports channels.

SeroxatBlonde · 19/08/2019 09:52

We call up to "cancel" sky every year and they give us all sorts of discounts - not paid full price for sky for years

Last time we did that we got multi room for free and then next time we got Sky Q free too.
