AIBU to want to keep Sky TV?

First world problems and all that, but...

We are trying to save money and DH suggested cancelling Sky.

I don't want to because:

  • We always stack up programmes to watch as 'box sets' as a couple.
  • I am an early riser so often record in the evening to watch before everyone else is up.
  • We just have a basic package so would be saving only a (relatively) small amount.
  • We are lucky enough that we don't need to save the money, we just want to divert more into holidays/work on the house etc.

AIBU to keep it?

Yabu. No-one needs sky. Just read a book!

😂 I love mumsnet.

DontFundHate · 18/08/2019 12:23

Hah yes sorry it was meant as a joke! But seriously, no one needs sky!

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 18/08/2019 12:26

Check if Now TV has all the sky box sets you like to watch. We've just downgraded to Now TV after having sky for about 10years as it was getting too expensive. All the main sky and sky movies channels are on there and I haven't really missed having sky yet.

Mouikey · 18/08/2019 12:33

Was like you too. We even went out of contract and paid well over the odds for months to keep Sky Atlantic for GoT and I didn’t want to lose our recorded shows. However we literally just reconstructed for tv and broadband, when Our box started smelling like it was about to burst into flames. Given that a new box would mean not keeping the shows, we bit the bullet and got rid of it.

We now have Now TV, prime, Netflix and plusnet broadband. Our bill has reduced by about 60% and we still get to watch all the shows we love and have Sky cinema (which we didn’t have before!). You can’t record (not sure if you could with a recorder), but to be honest everything streams within an hour of it going out live so it’s perfect! You won’t miss it!

Benes · 18/08/2019 13:20

Now TV does sky sports too.....but cheaper than sky. We've just been abroad and DH was watching the cricket on his phone using the now TV app and DS could watch kids programs and films when we're were getting ready.

NameChangedForTheDay · 18/08/2019 13:50

As PPs have said. I too call up to 'cancel' Sky every year.

I'm always super polite and cite financial reasons for wanting to cancel.

They always lop loads off monthly bill for me to stay. I pay £22 a month.

PuppyMonkey · 18/08/2019 13:57

I’ve had Now TV for a few months now (got a deal with all the TV and films for £50 for six months) and I always wonder why on earth other folk pay £60 a month or whatever it is for Sky TV. So they can record the programmes and FF through the adverts? Instead of having Now TV and no adverts? Confused

BumbleBeee69 · 18/08/2019 14:15

I got rid of Sky.. I have never looked back Grin

Floralnomad · 18/08/2019 14:42

I pay £28 per month for my complete sky sports pack , and the monthly cost on Now tv is £33.99 so definitely not cheaper .

Benes · 18/08/2019 14:52

If you can wait until November now TV tend to have a black Friday sale where you can get a 12 month subscription half price. You've to pay it upfront but it's worth it. Last year we also got a now TV stick which means we can watch it on other TVs in the house and take it away. That was definitely worth it when the GOT finale was on when we were away!

SconeofDestiny · 18/08/2019 15:08

Got rid of sky about 3 years ago, bought a Humax recorder and also swapped to Netflix. Much prefer Netflix to Sky. But I'd be perfectly happy with just the free satellite channels as I don't really watch much tv.

PuppyMonkey · 18/08/2019 16:30

Okay yes if you watch the sports channels I can see it might be worth having Sky - but for people just wanting to watch the TV shows, I can’t see the point of choosing to have Sky rather than going with NOW TV.

1Morewineplease · 18/08/2019 23:04

Ditch Sky

JazzyGG · 18/08/2019 23:11

I bloody love sky. I wasn't brought up with it and we've only had it about 7 years. I now couldn't be without it. Now TV only pauses for half an hour then you lose it so if you are dealing with kids it's a pain!

Cassilis · 18/08/2019 23:14

skippy67 - £3.20?! That's fantastic!

It’s also not true! NOW TV Ents pass is £7.99pm.

If you love TV then Sky Q is great, I love the Netflix recommendations are now in Q too.

Applejack5 · 18/08/2019 23:25

Cancel it and they will offer you a much better deal within the 30 day cancellation period.

We were paying £25 on an 18 month deal, then at the end it went up to £39 so I called to cancel. They offered me a similar package for £28, but I said no and went ahead with cancellation. A couple of weeks later they called and I got the same package for £18 a month so we stayed. You only get the best deal if you actually go ahead and cancel. It's worth a go if you'd prefer to keep Sky!

BarbaraofSeville · 19/08/2019 03:54

Cass

Like Sky, it is very easy to get NowTv for far less than the headline price. £3.20 is probably the average price what I've paid over the years. I've posted how upthread.

Netflix however, don't seem to be equally forthcoming with discounts unless anyone else has any ideas?

Alicealicewhothe · 19/08/2019 04:16

Can anyone tell me if nowtv has subtitles please

Mileysmiley · 19/08/2019 05:36

Well ... 2 weeks we upgraded to skyQ big mistake ... Friday the mini boxes won't work so we have had no tv all weekend on mini boxes. Which hasn't bothered us because we were busy in the garden and painting etc. Yesterday I rang sky to ask about a booster box because that is what we need (I think) The guy talks me through how to get them working by using the main SkyQ box ... Now that doesn't work either! The engineer can't come out until 27th August to fix it... oh but they aren't charging us for a week ... I wish I had stopped with the old Sky box now ... we live and learn ...

YouLookGood · 19/08/2019 05:53

Call up ‘to cancel’ Sky and I guarantee they will reduce your monthly fee.

YouLookGood · 19/08/2019 05:54

The fabled £3.20 with NowTV is only for a few months. You pay £7 for the first month then when you cancel, it offers you £3.20 for three months.

ChipsAreLife · 19/08/2019 06:02

I would happily get rid of sky but DH loves formula 1 and all the discovery stuff so we def get our moneys worth. He doesn't spend much on himself at all so I don't mind. Our package costs us £60 and includes multi room for kids.

I think if you use it keep it but Now TV does sound good if you don't use the sport.

ChipsAreLife · 19/08/2019 06:03

Oh and I know you can get sport on now tv but you can get the full coverage of every single moment of practice and qualifying and racing that DH needs 😬

ChipsAreLife · 19/08/2019 06:03

*can't get!

transformandriseup · 19/08/2019 06:09

Our sky is £27 per month which includes the movies. I rang up to cancel thinking the contract was over and found it it still had a year to run so they knocked a bit of the price. On maternity leave it has been invaluable.

I would only cancel if you can’t make savings elseware or you are definitely sure you aren’t going to miss it.
