AIBU to hate this singing 'style'?

Hello everybody. My dd, who is fifteen, loves music. She listens to a lot of pop singers, like Ariana Grande, Billie Ellish etc. She often listens to a lot of song 'covers' on youtube, which is where teens sing their favourite songs in their own style. I personally think it's sweet, but a lot of these teens use this strange style where they mispronounce the words! soit af loik thess. It really makes me angry for some reason. I seem to have an irrational hate of it. One singer that she listens to is called Jessie Reyez. Bloody hell! She's a talented girl but there really is no reason to sing like that... She sounds like she's screeching the words while mispronouncing everything.. Confused Is it just me who gets annoyed by this?

It’s annoying. More so when DD copies it and loses her beautiful singing voice.

Watching one of those kids got talent type shows with her and the coaches were actually teaching the kid to sing “wit choo” instead of “with you” I was very vocal to DD about that (sorry, should that be “ ‘bout dat’)

Alloftheboys · 16/08/2019 20:19

Never heard of Jessie Reyes before and lasted 22 seconds before I had to turn her off.
Can’t think about Ariana Grande without this coming to mind. m.youtube.com/watch?v=94tM31Y2Mm8

GoGoGoGoGo · 16/08/2019 20:29

Halsey is another culprit.

You know what else has annoyed me for a while? Songs don’t have a chorus anymore, just music. They all sound the same.

ethelfleda · 16/08/2019 20:33

OP I knew exactly what you where going to refer to before I even opened this thread and I completely agree. It drives me up the bloody wall.

AlexaAmbidextra · 16/08/2019 20:34

Wasn’t it Cerys Matthews that started the breathy, little girly thing? So irritating.

PickAChew · 16/08/2019 20:37

Always reminds me of the club singer

ethelfleda · 16/08/2019 20:44

They always make me think of the ‘messy bun’ girls on Pinterest - ya know, the whole ‘I just threw this look together’ with the oversized jumpers and the tiny tiny tattoos on the back of their necks.

MitziK · 16/08/2019 20:45

If I could hunt the proponents down, I would. Kid with a really nice voice, easily a grade 7 GCSE performance candidate - did a fried version of Your Song. She could have absolutely nailed a full on Elton version.

Sat in the studio, hit record - and I thought she had either frozen from terror or was recovering from diphtheria.

FUCK'S SAKE.

That and belting for kids whose adult voice just hasn't developed yet - 'oh, but Adele sings like it and has done since she was a teenager'. Yes, and Adele's already had treatment for fucking up her vocal cords as well.

Ban it. Make it stop. Please.

KaySarahSarah · 17/08/2019 00:31

I love listening to Adele TALK.

Same appears to be happening with Lewis Capaldi.

Patroclus · 17/08/2019 02:24

It came from people trying to copy the accent of north euro, usually scandinavian folk singers.

longwayoff · 17/08/2019 06:53

Was staring at tv bemused by an out of tune singer plunking a guitar a couple of days ago. And a teen busker in high st ditto. I was wondering what happened to singing instead of tuneless muttering, mumbling. Where did it go?

VirginiaWolfHall · 17/08/2019 07:06

Yes that’s it Patroclus - personally I blame Bjork, the biggest offender of them all Grin

origamiunicorn · 17/08/2019 07:18

I miss guitar solos too

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2019 07:26

Surely the 80s produced enough guitar solos to keep us going for a few decades

OpheliaTodd · 17/08/2019 07:26

Loathe it.

bumblingbovine49 · 17/08/2019 07:42

.I.dont know how.old.you are but I am getting on now (54) and I remember complaints from my parents about the constant singing in an ' American accent' by pop stars and rock bands etc in the 60s and 70s .

They also complained that ' nothing has a proper tune any more' . I say something similar when. I listen to the ' noise' my teenage DS seems to like BlushShockGrin

As a parent you are not supposed to like most of what your teenagers do.

VikVal · 17/08/2019 07:48

The problem is so many singers sound the same, they either sound like that or sound like generic Beyonce clones. I can't think of many unique female sounding singers, Adele is amazing and there might be a couple of others that have gone under radar but years ago when we had Whitney Houston, Celine Dion those were naturally gifted effortless singers that were amazing and unique. Now it's may be because singers are ten a penny that all these weird singers have come out to sound different to set them apart...but they sound the same lol.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 17/08/2019 07:50

patroclus it's unfortunate that it's made me irritated by the Scandi singers too, even though they're probably using their own accents. Sigrid has some great tunes!

Wherearemycrayons · 17/08/2019 07:57

Omg I hate this so much too 😂

PookieDo · 17/08/2019 07:59

I love Miranda sings. It’s such a piss take. Colleen has a real lovely voice!

Also love Tristan the voice coach. Him watching Shawn Mendez is hilarious

Janicejaniceahmfallin · 17/08/2019 08:40

Yes yes yes! I fucking haaaaaaate this! Between the girls singing as if they’re trying to maintain a duck pout at all times and therefore mispwonouncin eferyfin, and the ones who are basically bleating through their noses like sheep who need a Lemsip, and the talentless no marks who ‘yeeeeah’ and ‘haw’ over a moody backbeat and then insert a generic shit rap and some Drake-style mumble talk, the school run has become a bloody torture test. Totally unlistenable - if I don’t turn it off I end up grinding half the enamel off my teeth.

But as PPs have said, that’s prob the the way it should be!

PS Take your point on ‘Hurt’, Stealth, but I love the JC version, gives me goosebumps Grin

RochelleGoyle · 28/01/2020 23:26

Definitely found my people on this thread! It's soooo frustrating that many young singers seem incapable of normal speech. Their 'style' is really contrived and even the respected artists like Adele do it! Confused

RochelleGoyle · 28/01/2020 23:27

Stealth, I too much prefer Trent's version of Hurt, although I appreciate that Cash delivered the beautiful lyrics to a wider audience.
