AIBU to hate this singing 'style'?

Hello everybody. My dd, who is fifteen, loves music. She listens to a lot of pop singers, like Ariana Grande, Billie Ellish etc. She often listens to a lot of song 'covers' on youtube, which is where teens sing their favourite songs in their own style. I personally think it's sweet, but a lot of these teens use this strange style where they mispronounce the words! soit af loik thess. It really makes me angry for some reason. I seem to have an irrational hate of it. One singer that she listens to is called Jessie Reyez. Bloody hell! She's a talented girl but there really is no reason to sing like that... She sounds like she's screeching the words while mispronouncing everything.. Confused Is it just me who gets annoyed by this?

Hehe. Sorry 'bout that. Those goth twins are the stuff of nightmares. Yes, I'm old.

Owlypants · 16/08/2019 18:19

Sam Smith sounds constipated

aufaitaccompli · 16/08/2019 18:20

Op I totally agree.

I consider this one to be one of the worst offenders for that vowel-elongation, consonant-mashing 'style'

Albatross454 · 16/08/2019 18:20

@owlypants I think his voice is so whiny!

I love Jessie Reyez! The lyrics and content of her songs especially. "Figures" means a lot to me too.

Ariana Granda - sounds too nasally like she's purely singing out of her nose. I'm not into those kinds of songs either.

Billie Eilish....jury's still out!

Drabarni · 16/08/2019 18:27

It could be worse you could have one with their own sound, who prefers Jazz or Opera to modern music.

I think it's usually down to lack of ability not choosing a particular style, but following what others do badly, thinking it's correct.

I'm not sure about this particular style but vocal teachers have told us that singing in a false voice to your own will only work for some time. Then you become unable to sing and sometimes end up with huge breaks you just can't sing through Sad

JaneJeffer · 16/08/2019 18:33

I love Billie Eilish even though I'm definitely not her target audience Grin

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 16/08/2019 18:34

Lewis Capaldi gives me the rage as well.

SlightlyWizened · 16/08/2019 18:48

Oh yes!
How about my current favourite

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2019 18:54

That Lewis capaldi song sounds like Dragostea Din Tei by ozone, please Google it :)

BendydickCuminsnatch · 16/08/2019 18:56

Wowwwww our can tell that Ariel girl has a good voice and training but OMG that attitude is vile!!

Albatross454 · 16/08/2019 18:56

Thing is we're not meant to like our kids' music, are we? I'm quite sure my mother wasn't particularly enamoured of Sisters of Mercy and Fields of the Nephilim when I was 15 and that's quite how it should be, it's the natural order!

I love Billie Eilish, btw. Curiously my DD can't stand her!

Mammyloveswine · 16/08/2019 19:08

I just had a listen! I know what you mean, it's not a "natural" way to sing!

But I am a trained singer and so probably sound more like I'm auditioning for a west end musical Grin

CommeDesPoissons · 16/08/2019 19:13

Ooh, I quite like that Mabel song #grannydancing #it'sgotagoodbeat

PurpleTreeFrog · 16/08/2019 19:14
It was going viral on Facebook recently. I think they are amazing singers but the croaking think kind of bothers me Blush I mean at least it's shouty rather than breathy but I think I also dislike shouty... Can't win!
Sicktobloodydeath · 16/08/2019 19:21

Omg I’ve literally been thinking this all day! How strange! This is one of the reasons I can’t listen to the radio, so many songs now are screechy shouty irritating as fuck clangy and mispronounced. I wouldn’t mind but they all sound the pissing same. It’s like they’re trying to be different but ironically appear as cookie cutters in the shape of twats.

Bierplease · 16/08/2019 19:23

@SlightlyWizened for ages I thought she was saying ‘all night give me lilo’ 🤔

Sicktobloodydeath · 16/08/2019 19:24

PS i’m 24 so I don’t think it’s an age thing. Although I was born in the wrong decade Envy

SeaViewBliss · 16/08/2019 19:25

Liz Gillies called it seal singingGrin

annielouise · 16/08/2019 19:46

That twinkle twinkle ad was terrible. I'll probably get slammed for this (have done by my kids) but I always thought the way Amy Whitehouse sang was very affected/fake. Beyonce too.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 16/08/2019 19:51

I like her, but... Paloma Faith does it too. It's so annoying because I think her voice would be amazing if she dropped the affectations. It sets my teeth on edge when she twangs on about "He lef' me faww anovver laydeh".

Whatwouldbigfatfannydo · 16/08/2019 20:06

Take that back! Lewis Capaldi is a national treasure Grin

I'm not the biggest fan of his more popular songs, but this guy has me in stitches! So much better than the vapid, self-obsessed 'celebrities' nowadays.

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2019 20:08

From everything I've read he does seem like a great guy. Just a crap singer :)
