To sit in A&E? How can I make someone take this pain seriously?

At 4am I was woken up with excruciating abdominal cramps. They were like the worst period pain I have ever had in my life, and I had to lie on the floor and breathe through them. I also had a desperate need to pee, without really needing to. I fell asleep on the bathroom floor, eventually, after an hour or so. I had passed some clots. I am not on my period.

This also happened in March. They referred me to the cancer pathway for bladder cancer then, I had a cystoscopy and biopsy which were clear and was discharged. I had an internal examination due to very heavy bleeding, which the doctor recorded as being "a highly abnormal heavy flow", but recorded as a miscarriage.

I'm 30. I've never had period problems before this year, always light and short. I've had no kids. I'm on the pill. I'm not due on for another 2 weeks, and this doesn't feel like my period.

A doctor at my surgery can call me at 3:30pm, but the receptionist seemed baffled I was calling and asked what I wanted them to do. A paramedic friend has told me to go to A&E and push for a scan, but apart from some residual tenderness, I feel okay at the moment and I only bleed at night. Is that unreasonable? How do I get them to take this seriously?

Personally if it were me I would go to A&E. If you see your gp they may send you to A&E in any case.

Hanraa1 · 16/08/2019 11:44

A&E sounds like a good idea. Could be kidney infection or possible ectopic pregnancy. That much pain isn't something to ignore, you're doing the right thing!

Toddlerteaplease · 16/08/2019 11:45

Nurse here. I agree that you should go to A&E.

QualCheckBot · 16/08/2019 11:46

Kidney/gall stones?

Have you even been given an ultrasound scan? Bloods taken?

lmusic87 · 16/08/2019 11:47

This is A&E, good luck OP xx

Robs20 · 16/08/2019 11:49

Go to a&e or push your GP for an urgent referral. I would want to be seen by a specialist (not GP) in any event. Could it be ovarian cysts? I have them atm and they can cause intense pain if they rupture/ cause abnormal bleeding.

DerelictWreck · 16/08/2019 11:57

I agree - go. Sounds like my ovarian cysts

Yabbers · 16/08/2019 12:00

but the receptionist seemed baffled I was calling and asked what I wanted them to do.
Really? You need to change GP.

Jayaywhynot · 16/08/2019 12:04

Yup, this is what A&E is for, bite the bullet, get a drink, book and pillow and get yourself down there, let us know what happens Flowers

WhoTellsYourStory · 16/08/2019 12:13

DEFINITELY go to A&E. Something clearly isn't right. When I was in this position (different symptoms), I went to A&E out of desperation as nobody was taking it seriously - turned out to be a massive fibroid which made me infertile. Healthcare staff can be absolutely awful about what they say as "womens' problems" but the A&E dept were fab.

dottiedodah · 16/08/2019 12:38

Please go to A and E ASAP! DO NOT DELAY!. Not wishing to alarm you but I had a huge ovarian cyst which burst and was a medical emergency .Do not wait until 3.30 .Hopefully not anything major but defo needs to be checked out!. A and E doctors are more used to seeing different problems and will be more likely to diagnose properly.

ChrisPrattsFace · 16/08/2019 12:44

Sounds like when I had a torsioned ovarian cyst.
I passed regular clots and was very unwell for a long time - eventually I collapsed and was taken to A&E.
Go to A&E OP, good luck.

TinyMystery · 16/08/2019 12:45

I agree with the above. (I’m a midwife FWIW and whilst this isn’t exactly my sphere of practice, it definitely rings alarm bells)

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 16/08/2019 12:48

A&e definitely
Do you have a temperature?

Trooperslaneagain · 16/08/2019 12:50

I thought ovarian cyst too.

I was taken to hospital in an ambulance. Worst pain ever. Labour was a breeze in comparison.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 16/08/2019 12:51

I would.

Just a question, did it occur at this point when it’s happened previously? Could it be mittelschmerz (ovulation pain/mid cycle pain). I’ve had it awfully since dc4 was born 4 years ago. Not every month, although most. It can have me doubled up in pain, sweating & vomiting at it’s very worst & has on 2 occasions lasted for a couple of days (normally only 4-6 hours max). I’m under a gynaecologist anyway for other issued & they haven’t found any reasons for it. Just one of those things apparently.

managedmis · 16/08/2019 12:51

but the receptionist seemed baffled I was calling and asked what I wanted them to do

^

FYI - the receptionist is NOT a doctor. Go above her.

xJune88 · 16/08/2019 12:56

My ovarian cyst rupturing was worse than my 23hour labour and emcs the pain was unreal in any position. I didnt bleed though. Obv could be something else though. Get to a+e! Hope you're ok x

TheSandgroper · 16/08/2019 12:57

Don’t bleed into the toilet if you can help it. Use pads and keep them all. Note the time you change them, if you can. Your blood loss can be weighed and measured which can add strength to any discussion you may have.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 16/08/2019 13:25

Do you still have an appendix OP ?

I only ask as some of your symptons are what I had . Turned out to be the appendix . Anyway I would take the advise given and go to A&E.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 16/08/2019 13:26

Ah, clots .. Perhaps not appendix then .

IfItsNotAlrightItsNotTheEnd · 16/08/2019 13:30

Thanks all - I hadn't thought about ovarian cysts, but I've 6 of the 9 symptoms listed online. 111 called back and advised me to go to a walk in centre as the excruciating pain isn't there now, so A&E wasn't appropriate, but the walk in centre isn't at my local hospital, it's 8 miles away, and they don't have scanning facilities.

I think I'm going to go to A&E; just packing up some painkillers and pads and things to try and stay comfortable.

Thank you all Thanks
