To sit in A&E? How can I make someone take this pain seriously?

At 4am I was woken up with excruciating abdominal cramps. They were like the worst period pain I have ever had in my life, and I had to lie on the floor and breathe through them. I also had a desperate need to pee, without really needing to. I fell asleep on the bathroom floor, eventually, after an hour or so. I had passed some clots. I am not on my period.

This also happened in March. They referred me to the cancer pathway for bladder cancer then, I had a cystoscopy and biopsy which were clear and was discharged. I had an internal examination due to very heavy bleeding, which the doctor recorded as being "a highly abnormal heavy flow", but recorded as a miscarriage.

I'm 30. I've never had period problems before this year, always light and short. I've had no kids. I'm on the pill. I'm not due on for another 2 weeks, and this doesn't feel like my period.

A doctor at my surgery can call me at 3:30pm, but the receptionist seemed baffled I was calling and asked what I wanted them to do. A paramedic friend has told me to go to A&E and push for a scan, but apart from some residual tenderness, I feel okay at the moment and I only bleed at night. Is that unreasonable? How do I get them to take this seriously?

Shplot · 17/08/2019 13:30

Are you ok op?

Zebraaa · 17/08/2019 13:33

Hope you went OP. Surely you must be anaemic by now too if you are losing that much blood Flowers

justasking111 · 17/08/2019 13:35

@IfItsNotAlrightItsNotTheEnd hope you are sorted now.

katewhinesalot · 17/08/2019 13:37

Fingers crossed for you.

sorry haven't RTFT
this sounds like what I had with ovarian cysts. and also a little of when I had uterine polyps (the bleeding)

S0uthernBelle · 17/08/2019 14:54

Any news OP?

Sorry for the late update. I went to A&E on Friday, but it was rammed. I waited for seven hours in the end, four after triage and three for the scan machine, which seemed to be malfunctioning. Eventually, they apologised and said they wouldn't be able to scan me today but they could take urine samples and would be in touch.

Pain was okay until Sunday night and then it flared badly again. Urine samples are all clear and none grew cultures; no sign of UTI.

I've just talked to my doctor who has arranged a pelvic scan, although there is a four to five-week wait. She's agreed that it sounds gynaecological and said her thoughts would be cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease or endo, which worried me a bit... I don't think I really meet the symptoms for endo, my periods aren't generally bad, and I have no pain with intercourse or toilet usage... but I'm probably just fretting about infertility there.

So, I'm waiting for the scan, and I've been prescribed co-codamol and tramadol in the meantime if the pain remains.

Wow, a 4-5 week wait for a simple scan! I developed a kidney stone on holiday in Lanzarote, and was scanned the same day in hospital. I didn't even need to use my travel insurance, my EHIC card was sufficient. I also got comprehensive blood tests the same day.

Have you had blood tests yet OP?

I hope it resolves itself and you feel better soon.

inwood · 20/08/2019 12:01

That's a crazy wait for a scan. Can you pay for a private scan - it will at least give you some idea of what's going on?

missyB1 · 20/08/2019 12:03

Tbh I would ring the local private hospital and ask how much a scan would be.

FrowningFlamingo · 20/08/2019 12:31

@QualCheckBot as you would have been for a suspected kidney stone in the UK too. There’s a dedicated slot for this every day in the hospital I work and if more than one come in they make room.

FluffyCloudsInTheSky · 20/08/2019 19:39

That's a very low wait Thanks

QueenOfPain · 20/08/2019 19:44

@QualCheckBot What are you thinking they might find on blood tests?
