To be unimpressed this happened at nursery

GilbertMarkham · 15/08/2019 19:27

My toddler came home from nursery with red marks from what looks like a hard, twisting grip on her arm above the elbow.

Aibu to be concerned about supervision of us this par for the course/happens too fast to be prevented?

Would attach images but can't.

My DS came home with bite marks all over him. Initially they said they were more likely to be bruises from falling over, but when I showed them photos of the marks they realised it must have happened when he was playing with another child. They had noticed he was a little quiet and withdrawn, but hadn’t suspected anything bad because he hadn’t cried.

I have to say if staff were supervising my child so poorly that another child could repeatedly bite them all over; I wouldn't be fkg impressed .. which is I suppose the point of this thread (wondering if my expectations are too high).

Does this link work?

It looks a bit fainter in pic than it was.

It doesn't look like a grip to me to be honest. I wouldn't take it further

SombReroIguana · 15/08/2019 21:09

Actually I think after seeing something else on here about safeguarding (‘if you think it, report it’) that you should report it to ofsted

If it looks like marks made by an adult then report there’s no such thing as being trigger happy when it comes to the safety of children and it’s said so so often in the reverse situation but these type of things need the same level of concern as safeguarding works both ways

I had to go to a nursery once to observe a little girl. My only job, all day, was to watch this little girl. I swear I didn't take my eyes off her. Half an hour before home time, I noticed a bite on her arm. How? When? I honestly don't believe I stopped looking at her for more than 10 seconds all day. This was five years ago and I still sometimes think about how it happened. I've concluded kids are ninjas.

Sorry your little one got bumped but as long as she's happy and it's not regular, I'd try to not worry too much. They're rough and tumble places.

OMGshefoundmeout · 15/08/2019 21:11

That looks consistent with falling and scraping herself against a table edge or door of a toy car. It doesn’t look like a twist or Chinese burn. I don’t think you need take it any further.

GilbertMarkham · 15/08/2019 21:11

That's why I initially started the thread as well, to canvass opinions on the marks - I'd thought I could attach an image.

Doesn’t look like a grip mark to me. More like she’s fallen on a toy for example that’s on the floor.

thecatinthetwat · 15/08/2019 21:16

Let them know that’s its happened and see how it goes. Hopefully nothing more to worry about.

GilbertMarkham · 15/08/2019 21:20

It's interesting/good to hear that - my initial impression was of grabbing/grasping/nipping.. I thought a fall/impact would be far more likely to cause a bruise.

Maybe the managers not full of shit then.

*manager's

I may be a very negligent parent but I'm not sure that mark would raise a concern with me.

But then I was a child who manifested totally unexplained bruises on a regular basis because I was a clumsy child with an apparently high pain threshold who bruised like a peach! My parents apparently lived in fear of social services being called and their only explanation being "we have absolutely no idea"!

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 15/08/2019 21:22

I agree it doesn't look like a grab. By all means raise it with the nursery, it cant hurt to Express concerns.

In terms of supervision something to bear in mind is that staff ratios are 1:4 at that age so sometimes things will get missed.

kiki22 · 15/08/2019 21:27

They can't watch every child every moment. If they didn't see it and your daughter can't tell you what happened put it down to an accident and move on.

Mine have been bitten, pushed, kicked in the face once, fell, argued, had pushing scuffles (ds2) over the years as long as it's not a chain of incidents I've never bothered.

hairyturkey · 15/08/2019 21:36

Doesn't look like a grab mark to me either.

GilbertMarkham · 15/08/2019 21:38

We raised it with them, manager's response is upthread.

(Fell out of something).

We responded it seemed more like friction, she responded "no, that would break the skin etc" and in response to us asking if it would be worth supervising her a bit more closely during her "debut" in the toddler room, she replied that she couldn't ge more supervision than any other child, it wouldn't be fair.

I'm surprised at how many people think it's an impact mark, it's such a strange double stripe affair - I honestly though it was a grab/twist. Thought an impact would just cause bruise.

I'm well aware many of them are wee hooligans and can be v rough.

I'm just a bit concerned about her moving up to the next age group, being the youngest and getting bullied. Also I've really noticed the difference between her and a friend's toddler who has an older sibling. Her girl is just so much craftier/bolder

OP posts:
GilbertMarkham · 15/08/2019 21:41

(She's constantly scrapping with her older sister).

PrayingandHoping · 15/08/2019 21:41

Doesn't look like a grab mark, looks like she's fallen against something

PrayingandHoping · 15/08/2019 21:42

Staff ratio numbers would be the main reason one child can't be given more supervision

GilbertMarkham · 15/08/2019 21:43

Reading this thread I'm realising how lucky she's been (so far) not to have been bitten 😆

OP posts:
toadabode · 15/08/2019 21:46

It could have been done by a member of staff?

GilbertMarkham · 15/08/2019 21:47

Staff ratio numbers would be the main reason one child can't be given more supervision

I understand.
Was just hoping they might keep a slightly closer eye on the new ones for the first while.

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/08/2019 21:49

The two stripes would depend on what she’s fallen on or how many times.

I don’t think that’s a grab mark either. It’s an odd angle. Is there a corresponding bruise on the inside of the arm.

GilbertMarkham · 15/08/2019 21:49

It could have been done by a member of staff?

Do you not agree that it's from an impact then?

I'd never find out/be able to prove it, if it was.
