WIBU to insist on this pram?

I really, really want a Bugaboo Fox. In the reviews it ticks all the boxes for me: sturdy, lightweight, all-terrain, great storage and obviously pretty damn gorgeous!!

BUT DH doesn't think we should spend a grand on something we'll only use for about three years and wants us to get something second hand. He doesn't understand that there are literally billions of types out there, and some of the cheaper brands are cheap for a reason!

Also he won't ever be pushing the damn thing - I don't drive, and will be doing A LOT of walking with it. We live in a hilly town with some rural areas, so just buying something at random from the Argos catalogue isn't going to cut it. It needs to be light, easily folded, have good storage and be able to tackle mud, uneven ground, hills and busy streets.

WIBU to just buy the Fox regardless? We're not rich by any means, but we're not poor either, we can afford it. Plus I expect my parents will want to cover half the cost. Or should I compromise and get something cheaper like the baby jogger city mini? I don't like that it's forward facing only, but it's another all-terrain and my husband is more likely to agree on that one...

Ops husband/partner doesn’t want to spend a grand on a pram, this should be respected.

LaurieMarlow · 14/08/2019 12:41

I have absolutely no chip on my shoulder, I just find it bizarre the comments on these threads that come from people who clearly are materialistic and everything cheap and not popular is beneath them and shit.

Oh please Hmm

Are people not allowed to spend their money how they like now?

RubbingHimSourly · 14/08/2019 12:41

You're paying for the name. And after once seeing a pram literally fly upside down in strong winds I wouldn't ever buy a super lightweight one. They need some bulk to them.

CottonSock · 14/08/2019 12:41

Get a nipper. Bugaboo is overrated and overpriced.

LaurieMarlow · 14/08/2019 12:42

Ops husband/partner doesn’t want to spend a grand on a pram, this should be respected.

That depends on the circs.

What if he wants to spend 5k on a ski holiday instead. Should that be respected?

hsegfiugseskufh · 14/08/2019 12:43

i don't think price reflects on how good a pram is at all in my experience.

or how comfy it is.

LaurieMarlow · 14/08/2019 12:44

I agree there isn’t necessarily a direct correlation.

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyRantOver · 14/08/2019 12:45

from people who clearly are materialistic and everything cheap and not popular is beneath them and shit.

some posters sound bitter!

It's just a simple fact that many cheap prams don't compare with more expensive ones. Try a few and compare, the difference is obvious.
it's also obvious in day-to-day use and long term.

Some parents struggle with prams that don't take steps wells, don't go on pavements easily, need 2 hands to be pushed, can't adapt the handle to the correct heigh, can't change from forward to backward facing, are unusable in a field or on the beach, let alone snow, have badly fitted rain covers, barely last more than a year.

Why on earth would you prefer a less convenient and cheap item when you can buy the better version? It's beyond reverse snobbery!

Divebar · 14/08/2019 12:48

You don’t have to buy new though do you? I bought mine second hand for a bargain price and it fitted with my car seat.

JustMe81 · 14/08/2019 12:49

OP for all terrain look in to the Venicci brand. They’re still expensive but I found the suspension to be second to none. I had one with my son and loved it. However, I’m now pregnant with no2 and my son has just turned 2 and the Venicci can’t be converted to a double so I’m looking at the Bugaboo Donkey 2. My sons at that awkward age where he can and wants to walk everywhere but then suddenly decides his legs don’t work anymore so I definitely need a double and hate the ones where one baby sits at floor level. The Donkey 2 seems to be the only one that keeps them both at the same level. Hmm Something to think about if you think you might have another baby in the next couple of years.

Jellybeansincognito · 14/08/2019 12:54

@LaurieMarlow apparently not consider the OP....

Jellybeansincognito · 14/08/2019 12:55

@SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyRantOver why are you assuming I’m bitter?
How do you know what pram I had?
I can assure you this doesn’t come from a place of bitterness.

hsegfiugseskufh · 14/08/2019 12:56

seriously I bought a second hand chicco urban for £50 and it was the most convenient pram ever! I don't think they were particularly expensive new either. I didn't struggle with anything with it to be honest...

It would have been pointless buying a more expensive new pram because it wouldn't have done any better (and as it goes I did do that and bought a shiny new travel system before ds was born and it was shite!)

more money doesn't equal more convenience or a better pram!

I had a cameleon which was an expensive pram new and I found it a total PITA in comparison!

Sirzy · 14/08/2019 12:56

You need to set a budget together and then work within that. Either second hand or brand new depending what meets your practical requirements best.

Ds has a £700 on terrain wheelchair/sn buggy. Thankfully a charity half funded it but otherwise I would have gone second hand as our lifestyle meant we needed something more than the basic wheelchair services one at times.

His is made by the same people as mountain buggy so if their buggies are made to the same I would buy one without doubt.

Jellybeansincognito · 14/08/2019 12:56

What if he wants to spend 5k on a ski holiday instead. Should that be respected?

Yes, and it would be reasonable to say no to that too.

avocadotofu · 14/08/2019 12:57

Definitely get the pram YOU want because you'll be the main one using it.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 14/08/2019 12:58

If your heart is set on that one and you can afford it, plus you are the one who's going to be pushing it, I'd say go for it.

I do think a lot of the price is about the name, so whether you're getting value for money is a moot point, but by the same token if you look after it you could sell it on and probably make most of your money back.

In fact, does you DH realise this? He might be happier if you explained they keep their resale value.

cupoftea84 · 14/08/2019 12:59

I wanted the Fox. DH wanted a mini jogger. We compromised on the cybex balios s. Very very like the fox.

ambereeree · 14/08/2019 13:00

Mountain buggy is much better imo. But if you do get the bugaboo the resale value is good.

Skyejuly · 14/08/2019 13:01

Often you buy into the name not quality. Dont be fooled. Mum of 4 here and trust me the hype of new is not worth it.

Hollywhiskey · 14/08/2019 13:03

I had bugaboo buffalo with my first and now the donkey as the second is due in a couple of weeks and the first isn't yet 20 months.
I really rate bugaboo but I absolutely would not be spending £1,000 on a pram. We got one from eBay and the other from Facebook marketplace, one was £400 and the other £300 and that included accessories like the foot muff and rain covers. We bought the first lot of car seat adaptors from bugaboo for £40 and the second one for £10 from Facebook marketplace- there's no difference other than the £30 still in my purse this time round.
Lots of people buy expensive buggies new and sell them after only a year in favour of something lighter. Certainly the ones I bought are in great condition, clean and nice with no tears or anything, maybe a few scuffs around the wheels but if I had a new one I guess I'd have scuffed it myself by now.
Definitely look second hand, there is loads of choice and these things get far too little use to get worn out.

icelollycraving · 14/08/2019 13:06

We spent a lot on the stokke explory, I had pretty much every accessory they had in the shop Grin A lot of money but I loved it. We sold it after 18 months I think and got quite a lot of our money as I’d kept it pristine.
If you can afford it, get it. It’s you pushing it.

Hollywhiskey · 14/08/2019 13:08

Just noticed you said you live rurally - me too. For footpaths you really need a sling otherwise you'll get stuck in mud, kissing gates, stiles... speaking as someone who's dragged a bugaboo buffalo down a sandy beach with a toddler in it while 7 months pregnant, and got it literally stuck in the mud doing a grassy parkrun in January, bugaboo is not as all terrain as they'd like you to believe.

georgialondon · 14/08/2019 13:11

If you can afford it then get it. My Bugaboo has bought me nothing but joy. Grin

georgialondon · 14/08/2019 13:12

I be regretting it if I hadn't got it.
