to consider using a bedpan?

It’s winter here & live in a very original style Victorian era house with poor heat insulation. The only bathroom is downstairs, down the opposite end of the house in the most bitterly cold section.

The temperature fell to 6 degrees Celsius & had to take two hot water bottles to bed instead of the usual one.

AIBU to use a bedpan so I don’t have to go downstairs ? Strictly for #1s only of course. It would be emptied 1st thing in the morning no question

My main concerns are 1. Is using a bedpan weird in today’s society ?

  1. How would you feel if your housemate used a bedpan? Should this be kept very private ?

Get a little camping toilet with lid and flush ..you fill one part with water for the flush.
Try Amazon

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/08/2019 13:18

Didn’t know decaf is less of a diuretic than regular caffeinated coffee Caffeinated coffee can irritate the bladder lining stimulating the urge to wee (and even causing cystitis-like symptoms).

If the smell of poo in an en-suite is off-putting (which it is), just don't poo in the en-suite. Use it for showers and wees.

What a lot of ridiculous hysterical responses on this thread.
Get a chamber pot if you need to—there is nothing shameful about it.
You can wipe your hands with alcohol gel or a wet wipe in the unlikely event you should wee on them.

cherryblossomgin · 14/08/2019 20:39

6c might not be cold for the UK but if you are in a warmer climate its understandable that you are cold. My Grandparents moved from Scotland to the Med and get cold in temperatures below 10c.

Try some flannelette sheets under the duvet cover they keep heat in. They are comfy aswell.

Boysey45 · 14/08/2019 21:20

I have only heard of people weeing in bedpans/pots if they are disabled/very old or where there was no inside toilet like in Victorian times etc or when camping.
My Mum has had 2 hip operations and lives in a house with no central heating and she gets up to use the loo. Even just she had it done she used the toilet on the ward.

I think its very strange that someone would want to wee in a pot just because its was a bit cold.

Lonelykettleshed · 14/08/2019 21:49

To warm up in bed I would suggest: brushed cotton sheets and duvet cover, wear socks and long sleeve PJs. Use a hot water bottle with a cover - lower heat but will last all night. Also, puta blanket or throw on top of the bed.

As for the loo - what about getting a camping toilet? It'll have a lid and so won't smell. You can use hand sanitiser to wash with.

You have my sympathies, 6c in houses with minimal heating and which are designed to keep heat out does feel cold.

Cryalot2 · 14/08/2019 21:56

I can see your point of view.
Do it if you need to . I also drink lots of hot tea during the day which means I need to wee at night.
Its not nice going for a wee in the night. What is cold to 1 person may not be to another.
As long as you use a lid and empty first thing go a head.

LipSyncForYourLife · 14/08/2019 22:21

Do a tinkle into a hot water bottle and take it back to bed with you.

mumwon · 14/08/2019 22:31

sleep downstairs while its so cold, flannelette nightie or pj , (or fleecy jogging bottoms ditto top) or pj vest (or tshirt) thick socks - & !!!! hot water bottle!!! purchase dimplex heater for bathroom to keep it warmer at night time -if you have a fleece if you cant find a dressing gown you can use it for your trips
this is beginning to sound like one of those memory games like the aldi one!

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 14/08/2019 22:41

Ha ha PMSL at all the pearl-clutching on here! My 2 year old is just potty trained so I am very used to someone pissing and crapping in a plastic container in every room in the house Grin. Wee wherever you like OP, yes, obviously keep it on the downlow as far as your housemates are concerned but your bodily fluids are your own business.

However can you please elaborate on your comment about the collectible value of Tupperware? Smile

SummerBreezemakesmefeelfine · 14/08/2019 22:53

My Gran had a chamber pot under the bed back in the 1960s. She lived in a home with an outside loo, so I guess in the winter it was useful.

Since then I have only known of people with disabilities needing these. If that were the case the council would probably supply a commode free of charge, but it has to be agreed on beforehand who will empty this.

TooManyPaws · 15/08/2019 00:15

I live in Scotland without working central heating - which hasn't worked for about four years but I can't afford to replace it as it's the whole system not just the boiler. I sleep in cotton jersey pyjamas out of the supermarket with something like a fleece sweatshirt over the top, proper woollen socks, and perhaps a wool hat if it's seriously below zero. Flannelette sheets and a good underblanket help considerably, as well as a decent duvet with a throw on the top. Hot water bottle with cover and dog at my feet, and all is good.

I get up to the loo at night all the same as I have damaged bladder control and go to bed with a hot drink to warm me up. I still make it to the loo in snowy sub-zero weather.

Durgasarrow · 15/08/2019 00:26

Six degrees C would be a heat wave in winter in many places.

SaraNade · 15/08/2019 05:43

I don't know. I'm in Australia and almost everyone has reverse cycle aircon, at least in their lounge room if not in the bedroom too, especially if the house is old. Our house is an old timber house, and aircon is needed more than brick home or the modern homes. Tbh I wouldn't use one, because then you have to muck around with emptying it in the morning, rinsing/washing it out, etc.

It easier just going to the toilet, flushing then and there, and it's all done. On the spot. Too much mucking around for me, I'd probably put off emptying it as I'd be too busy and it would be a chore, and it would start to smell. It is cold going to the toilet in the winter, but, that's just the way it is. You get used to it. And as long as you restrict fluids at night, it should only be once a night, if even that. Often you can go through the night without needing to if you restrict fluids.

Hot water bottles? Are they still around? I remember using them decades ago before we had an aircon or heater. Or even electric blanket. I think my great grandmother used hot water bottles.

Ski4130 · 15/08/2019 05:54

Currently camping in mid Wales, and managing to walk 600 yards in the dark, cold and occasional rain to the toilet block. YABU ...... though I peed behind my car the other night as the slanting rain meant I lose the will to traipse through it to get to the loo, so I was also BU :-)

SaraNade · 15/08/2019 05:55

Bed socks, which are thicker and meant for winter, are meant to be worn in bed and are different than daily/work socks (so I don't think your nan had bed socks in mind when she said that). I still wear them in bed, they keep my feet nice and warm.

Mummyoflittledragon It is actually an international site, attracting many, many members who are not from the UK. And, it's .com. Not .co.uk. So American-based website.

SaraNade · 15/08/2019 05:58

Could someone tell me what a duvet is? I've never heard of it. Do they mean to say doona? Or quilt?

cherryblossomgin · 15/08/2019 06:34

Sara- yes a duvet is a doona or quilt. :)

SimplySteveRedux · 15/08/2019 07:18

And, it's .com. Not .co.uk. So American-based website.

Actually .com was intended for commercial sites originally, and has faded into generic use over time. A .com site can be based anywhere.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/08/2019 07:29

@SaraNade
American based.😂😂😂 It’s as British as it comes. I never said only British people use or could use the site and obviously used by many people from different nationalities, which is great. Please extract the rod.

SallyWD · 15/08/2019 07:37

I don't see what's weird or gross about it. It just seems weird because no one does it anymore but I think it's fine.

SaraNade · 15/08/2019 09:24

@Mummyoflittledragon 😂😂😂 I said that because your previous post came across as you basically insinuating the OP shouldn't be on here as it's a British site, so how would anyone know what she means re the weather. It came across as you had a real rod there about it. Maybe consider how your posts come across in future before snarking at OP, then snarking at me. Wink
