to consider using a bedpan?

It’s winter here & live in a very original style Victorian era house with poor heat insulation. The only bathroom is downstairs, down the opposite end of the house in the most bitterly cold section.

The temperature fell to 6 degrees Celsius & had to take two hot water bottles to bed instead of the usual one.

AIBU to use a bedpan so I don’t have to go downstairs ? Strictly for #1s only of course. It would be emptied 1st thing in the morning no question

My main concerns are 1. Is using a bedpan weird in today’s society ?

  1. How would you feel if your housemate used a bedpan? Should this be kept very private ?

When I was doing a student year abroad in France I lived in a mixed hall of residence with mixed toilets and a LOT of weirdos. After a dodgy incident in the loo in the night (I got flashed at) I started to wee in a plastic beaker in my room and pour it down the sink, bleaching everything in the morning.

I have just remembered that.

Drink plenty of water or light coloured liquids during the day. Helps calm the bladder and stretches it a bit.
Then no tea or coffee after 6pm.
That should help.

(Otherwise wear socks in bed)

luckyrabbits · 14/08/2019 07:17

You could use a camping toilet. They have lids etc and you leave fluid in them to break down materials etc but I think you'd probably get fed up of emptying it.

Good tip to cut down having to get up in the night, go to loo 30 mins before bed and then go again just before you get into bed.

stucknoue · 14/08/2019 07:17

6 degrees isn't cold! It's that temperature or below over night for half the year here. Never had a hot water bottle either. Seems odd unless you are 5 and under!

Aus84 · 14/08/2019 07:21

I'm in Aus too and get similar temps over winter. I wouldn't have described an Aussie 6 degree winter as bitterly cold. Ski jackets to bed? Really? I'm a sook when it comes to the cold but that's a bit over the top. My house gets really cold as we have porcelain tiles, stone bench tops, open spaces and more glass than solid walls and we do fine with space heaters over winter. Could you just have one on a timer downstairs so the heat rises and the bathroom area is warmer when you need it?

stucknoue · 14/08/2019 07:22

If you are cold in bed you haven't got the right duvet - I have one that is 4.5, one that is 10.5 and the fasten together for cold weather, but cold is minus 5, I haven't used the double one for years, it's just not that cold in the middle of the U.K.

tile floors and I still get up and walk across the house to the loo.

There is nothing wrong with wearing socks to bed. They have those fleece bed socks at Kmart and look for a plush dressing gown and a plush fleece blanket. Wearing a knit hat will keep the heat from escaping the top of your head and you will feel much warmer with head and feet covered. It will be Spring soon.

formerbabe · 14/08/2019 07:28

If you're fit and healthy...don't do this. Have some self respect

RedWoollyHat · 14/08/2019 07:30

lol you lazy moo. I haven't done it but I have lived in some bloody freezing homes in Scotland (not due to weather - think no central heating in the middle of Winter) so I can see where you're coming from. I've only lived in small flats though, so my bathroom was never very very very far away. Is it any less dignified peeing in a pot than shuffling to the bathroom wrapped in a duvet? cause done that

Esspee · 14/08/2019 07:36

I'd suggest you see your doctor if you can't get through the night without getting up for a pee.
Why do you take sleeping tablets anyway? You are young and should be fit and healthy.
Learn bladder control and grow up.

KUGA · 14/08/2019 07:36

I cant see what the problem is. Like you said, its cold and along way to the toilet.

poshme · 14/08/2019 07:39

6 degrees inside or outside?
6 degrees inside is pretty cold (but I'd still go to the loo)

You need 2 duvets- one underneath you & a decent tog level on top of you. Yes- WEAR SOCKS

Wear a thermal vest. The long kind. Then PJs.

lisbet679 · 14/08/2019 07:41

@Esspee ouch ! Harsh Grin Grin

learn bladder control and grow up

I always get up to pee at night but have never gone to the doctor about it. I'm 55 so most likely a grown up now.

MrsSarahSiddons · 14/08/2019 07:44

You said you wouldn’t use Tupperware because of its collectible value. What a very odd thread.

SugarHockeyIcedTea · 14/08/2019 07:45

Good grief hen, you wouldn't cope where I live.

6 degrees is sometimes considered summer here!

Also, you're being hugely lazy- get out of bed and use your legs!

Butterfly005 · 14/08/2019 07:46

Goodness me, what's wrong with peeing in a bucket beside your bed?! I've done it - it's convenient, it doesn't smell or leak and you just empty it first thing in the morning.

It's really not that disgusting!

Dont wear polyester to bed, isn’t it dangerous to wear plaster pjs ?

I suppose you’d burn faster if you spontaneously combusted.... so maybe...

Besides I said dressing gown. Mine are floor length from long tall sally.

My Nan always old me it was bad to wear socks to bed ! Is this a myth

I think should consider thinking for yourself. That’s at least the second thing you’ve spouted that older people have obvs told you. That must be an old wives tale or something. Google is your friend.

Don’t take my advice if you don’t want to. I had to learn to be an expert at keeping warm due to chronic illness.

Nodnol · 14/08/2019 07:58

It’s not that cold here to not get up to pee! I love our Aussie winters, the weather doesn’t want us dead.

It was 3 degrees here last night, I put thongs on to dash to the loo.

HoppingPavlova · 14/08/2019 08:09

A bucket will do & yes am in Australia. If you ever get too hot just wet hand towels in cold water, wring them & place on feet/behind knees/elbows/neck etc

Please don’t embarrass the rest of usGrin. No, don’t use a bucket, a container or anything else. Go to the toilet like a normal person. Yes, it’s winter here. No, it’s not that cold. No, you don’t need ugg boots or a snow suit. We have been colder than that here at home in a usual winter (Sydney) and even when staying up the mountains where it has been below zero with no overnight heating even the kids when young through to adult never made such a bizarre suggestion.

And no, while wet towels do assist in extreme heat, they are not a cure all. Maybe give your great advice to those up far north in Cooktown or the like (worked up there for several months on a few occasions), wet towels on your elbows will do fuck all in that heat.

HoppingPavlova · 14/08/2019 08:10

It was 3 degrees here last night, I put thongs on to dash to the loo.

Yes, this is normal. Pissing in a bucket is not.

Boysey45 · 14/08/2019 08:11

Unless your disabled then your very lazy, just get up and go to the toilet. Its freezing in everyones house in winter if they don't have central heating.

bellinisurge · 14/08/2019 08:13

Get a she wee. Or just go to the loo - slippers ready by the bed and big dressing gown to hand.
