to consider using a bedpan?

It’s winter here & live in a very original style Victorian era house with poor heat insulation. The only bathroom is downstairs, down the opposite end of the house in the most bitterly cold section.

The temperature fell to 6 degrees Celsius & had to take two hot water bottles to bed instead of the usual one.

AIBU to use a bedpan so I don’t have to go downstairs ? Strictly for #1s only of course. It would be emptied 1st thing in the morning no question

My main concerns are 1. Is using a bedpan weird in today’s society ?

  1. How would you feel if your housemate used a bedpan? Should this be kept very private ?

I've just Googled Victorian houses in Australia (because I didn't know they existed outside of the UK) - they look very different to UK Victorian houses - much more ornate!

HennyPennyHorror · 14/08/2019 08:22

Roses yes and there are older than Victorian here too.

mumwon · 14/08/2019 08:23

thick dressing gown!

Skyejuly · 14/08/2019 08:26

If I wanted too then I would. You dont need to ask permission.

That said I just use slippers and dressing gown x

Skyejuly · 14/08/2019 08:27

In response to a PP. I'm 32 and generally healthy yet I still get up for a wee in night!

BlueSkiesLies · 14/08/2019 08:32

I’d probably just sleep in warm PJs, and have a fluffy dressing gown and toasty slippers by the bed.

I mean, how far away is the toilet really?! Do you live in a castle?

Also 6 degrees isn’t THAT cold!

Aprillygirl · 14/08/2019 08:35

Get a shewee and piss out of your window for all I care. Why do you have to ask permission on here to do something that would affect no one but yourself?

NameChangerOfTheNorth · 14/08/2019 08:38

6 degrees C isn't that cold to be unbearable.
C in F - maybe YANBU.

Bezalelle · 14/08/2019 08:45

I would! Very Dickensian.

fishonabicycle · 14/08/2019 08:46

Ps 6 degrees isn't very cold!

LakieLady · 14/08/2019 08:49

I'd go for it, but I grew up in a freezing, draughty flat with an outside lav and we all had a bucket in the bedroom for peeing in. It was our normal.

In the winter of 1962/63, it was so cold that the water in the outdoor lav froze solid. When anyone needed a poo, they had to boil a kettle first, to thaw the lav so they could flush it.

@Lisbet679 @WhyTho
If this post had been prefaced by information such as "I am disabled/I have medical problems" My response would have been fully supportive.
From the information supplied it appears the OP is a snowflake, just too lazy to comply with accepted modern hygiene standards.

sashh · 14/08/2019 08:55

It was 3 degrees here last night, I put thongs on to dash to the loo.

For anyone who doesn't know, flip flops are things in Oz, she wasn't in skimpy underwear.

OP

Get a better doona. When you go to bed put your slippers and dressing gown in your bed so when you put them on to go to the loo they are warm.

Likethebattle · 14/08/2019 09:01

Strange I never get up for a wee at night, last time would be over 3 years ago as i’ve not done it in current house. My bathroom is also downstairs on the other side of the house. After 8 pm I just drink the odd mouthful of water to stop me needing to go in the night. I also visit the loo right before bed.

Get slippers, reduce your fluids after 8pm and make sure you void your bladder fully before bed. Or be a minger and piss in a bucket 🤷🏻‍♀️

nzborn · 14/08/2019 09:02

YANBU but keep it a secret as you can see many have opinions.

HiJenny35 · 14/08/2019 09:11

No this is disgusting. So you are going to pee in a pot and then not wash your hands and get back into bed. Don't be vile, go to the toilet, wash your hands and go back to bed, you aren't an animal.

Redglitter · 14/08/2019 09:18

6 degrees really isn't particularly cold. Peeing in a chamber pot because you're too lazy to get up is disgusting

LaurieFairyCake · 14/08/2019 09:20

I think chamber pots are normal and were used even when I was a child

My grandmother was mostly able bodied but used a chamber pot as she didn't wake up so fully

I'm probably going to edge to do the same in a few years - I do struggle getting back to sleep when I've had to get up and go downstairs for a wee

I certainly would if I had to go as far as she did for a wee (outside!)

HairyDogsOfThigh · 14/08/2019 09:27

Seems like a reasonable idea to me. I'd get something like a camping /portable toilet. That way it's easier to carry the cassette part through to be emptied. If you wanted to do it on the cheap, a bucket lined with a bag with cat litter in would do the job. Not much worse that an on suite with the door open.

HoppingPavlova · 14/08/2019 09:38

a bucket lined with a bag with cat litter in would do the job.

And it gets better. Now we have people espousing the use of what is essentially a cat litter tray in a different shape.

prawnsword · 14/08/2019 10:20

Thank you for all your responses.

If you use enough toilet paper to cover your hand & don’t get urine on your fingers then are your hands really that dirty till morning ? I wash my hands a lot & am NOT unhygienic thank you ladies ! Don’t even touch atm buttons or petrol pumps with my bare hands. If I use the loo at home use some toilet paper to press the button as well, so am pretty sure am not that much of a grot, per se

The bucket & toilet paper in the bedroom isn’t a good look but it isn’t unhygienic as such... IMO

However am going to look into investing in some warmer bedding & a dressing gown. In regards to polyester PJs issue yes it’s to do with fire risk but your body can’t regulate temperature as well in synthetic fabrics

Just get one if you want OP. It's nobody else's business but yours. Just don't let the housemates find out.

QualCheckBot · 14/08/2019 12:06

YABU for both your strange attention to detail in asking questions about this (just keep it private if you must do it?) and for being so lazy to consider it in the first place. Its not all that cold and it won't hurt you and its not all that unusual to have a bathroom that far away.

If you use enough toilet paper to cover your hand & don’t get urine on your fingers then are your hands really that dirty till morning ?

Seriously? Are you one of those people that gets a thrill out of asking questions like this and pushing boundaries?

Crybabyghoul · 14/08/2019 12:26

Since urine is pretty much sterile providing you are a clean person, then I don't really see a problem. I mean unless you change your bed every day, you're lying in a bed that's been sweated on, covered in skin cells and maybe sexual fluids also. I don't see how a small pot of piss is really bad compared to that to be honest.

Just don't spill it! And yeah don't tell people, because most people are a bit squeamish about stuff like that.

MatildaTheCat · 14/08/2019 12:36

You want one of These in bed.

I would encourage use of the loo at night but if you go down the bucket route no need to advertise the fact on the internet. Smile
