To wear a tux

Every year at work we have an awards ceremony, it’s industry wide and I work in a male dominated industry. In previous years I have been groped, had one man break down a toilet door to see me pee, been called a crumpet, chased out of an event by a particularly aggressive man who ‘just wanted a hug’ among a lengthy list of other disgusting male Neanderthal incidents.

My boss always says to me ‘wear a posh frock’ but I really don’t want to, it’s sexist and I feel vulnerable and on display when I wear one and the reception I get is threatening and uncomfortable. WIBU turn up in a nice women’s tux this year?

Oh yes, go for the tux and kick the fuck out of anyone who behaves badly this year.

On the subject of a tux, when you get it, find a good local seamstress and have it tailored. I do it with most of my high street clothes and it takes them from 'alright' to 'wowzers'. It's the cheapest thing I've ever discovered for making me look like an adult.

LoudBatPerson · 13/08/2019 17:38

YANBU to wear whatever you like. I like a tux myself.

However I am really worried about the behaviour you have been subjected to! Have you raised this with HR and management and what has been the response?

Luckingfovely · 13/08/2019 17:45

Definitely wear the tux. With pepper spray in the pocket Wink

Purplerain16 · 13/08/2019 17:47

Wear the tux, report the disgusting behaviour to hr.

I'm sorry these men are such assholes.

SugarNyx · 13/08/2019 17:52

I can’t report it to HR is people from across the industry who don’t work at my company (thankfully) - the really annoying thing is you can see some of the guys look uncomfortable but no one says anything! They just stand there awkwardly

Have you seen Cara Delevigne in a tux? So chic, so cool! Go for it.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 13/08/2019 18:01

Definitely wear the tux! A family member went to a similar ceremony in a women's tux and won best-dressed at the end of the night.

Also, I'm really sorry all that has happened to you. It sounds terrifying. If you know which companies they work at I'd be tempted to report them to their own HR. It's a professional event where they're representing their company. If they behave like that at work, wtf are they like out of it?!

Paraballa · 13/08/2019 18:24

YANBU at all and I agree with pp to speak to HR about the appalling behaviour.

However, YABU to call it a tux. It's a dinner jacket.

Sparklesocks · 13/08/2019 18:32

Go for it, if I had the right frame I would too - Emma and Janelle are my women in suit/tux inspiration!

What industry do you work in? 1980s Wall Street? It sounds absolutely hellish. And people say we "don't need feminism" any more.

Londonmummy66 · 13/08/2019 19:33

Wear stilettos with it and step hard on the arch of any gropers feet...

RezCowgirl · 13/08/2019 19:35

I wouldn't even go to tbh but yeah go in a tux if you want to.

NearLifeExperience · 13/08/2019 19:37

Can’t believe 6% have said YABU.
Who are you people? Come and explain yourselves!

chasegirl · 13/08/2019 23:02

Me. I pressed to wrong button having a fat thumb moment Blush

dollydaydream114 · 13/08/2019 23:19

If someone broke down a door to get a glimpse of me having a piss, I'd call the police. That's not a prank. That's fucking horrific and frightening.

Ynci · 14/08/2019 00:05

My DD wore this to her leavers ball. It’s Ted Baker. Looked amazing and still feminine.

I hired one from Moss Bros. I too worked in a male dominated industry.
