To have dog PTS

Long story short, dog has cancerous growths on paws that are open, bleeding and a bit smelly to the point now he is limping badly and struggles walking. Vet confirmed it last month and until the other week he was happy enough in pain meds. In last week he’s deteriorated quickly and now is struggling, but in himself he seems happy. Wants food, always trying to move around, wags his tail etc. I know he’s probably got a few weeks left if I’m being honest given his deterioration. However, I’m due to go on holiday in a couple of days, and I’m really not sure he’ll be here when we get back. It feels cruel to leave him with my friend who said she’d look after him to have him possibly die when I’m away with no family there, and massively unfair on my friend though she doesn’t mind.
I don’t think he’s really got a quality of life or any longevity left at the moment, but at the same time having him pts before it’s absolutely necessary seems to be more to suit my holiday plans than his needs. But I’m also aware having him pts before he’s at deaths door is probably kinder. I’ve the vets today, AIBU to have him pts

Pts was for him. Delaying would have been for you. You did the right thing for him and that is the brave thing.

CloserIAm2Fine · 13/08/2019 19:26

So sorry OP but I think you’ve made the right choice

I feel like he would want to have you with him, and it would’ve been awful if your friend had to take him while you were away. And the stress of being away from you might’ve made him worse.

As the saying goes "better a day too soon than a day too late"

Hugs OP it's horrid but for the best Flowers

You've absolutely done the right thing op - no question. The easy thing would have been to try and keep him going. You shouldered his pain and did the right thing for him.

Oh my love, you made the right decision for your dog, it must have been so hard for you. Much love to you and yours, your dog would thank you if he could I'm sure.

Sorry for your loss Flowers. You really did the best thing for him.

Don’t ever doubt that he went out the way he lived life. He went out Loving you and being the best boy ever. I have such a lump in my throat reading this.

I think you made the right decision. I totally understand about the relief as well. I think that's perfectly normal and I know I felt the same when I had my poorly elderly mare PTS a couple of years ago. Hugs to you..

Much better to PTS before holiday than to leave friend to cope with possible deterioration and dog missing his family. I know several people who have regretted delaying the decision because of the later suffering the animal experienced.
