I was in Germany recently and bumped into someone I used to work with in India.

Oh, and in Cornwall a few years ago, we were sat in the beer garden of a pub on Lizard Point when my husband's old boss wandered past.

itssquidstella · 13/08/2019 08:02

I bumped into a former student on a tiny island in Bocas Del Toro, Panama.

gabsdot · 13/08/2019 08:13

In far Eastern Russia I met someone who knew someone I knew.
I'm Irish though so these things happen all the time.
I also met an English guy I had been friends with years before in a mall in Utah.

When I was 14 I bumped into a close school friend and her family in DisneyWorld Florida and then 30 years later (having not seen her since school) I bumped into her again in the same place!

Holidaying in a nice part of india
Went to the loo

Met a family in a Spanish island and next year met them at a different hotel on mainland.

Not me but 2 colleagues had booked the same coach tour and spent week travelling together.

Same colleague bumped into another member of staff the other side of the world too.

In a beachfront cafe in tenerife, sat down to breakfast and on an adjacent table was a college friend and her boyfirend I hadn't seen in a few years.

Mine happened in my own back garden.

Years ago, I shared a flat in London with a woman - we got on really well for the three years we lived together, but lost touch when I moved out. It was pre the days of mobile phones being mainstream.
Several house moves later, I end up settling in a tiny village in Yorkshire, and become friends with the couple next door. During last year's heatwave, I invited these neighbours to a barbecue but was told that the man's sister was up for the weekend for a visit. Not a problem, she's welcome to come too.
We were all shocked to discover that the sister was my London houseshare friend!

Walking along San Diego harbour when I was a teenager and my dad suddenly shouted 'Hello!' to a bloke coming the other way. He worked with him. Neither knew the other was coming.

Same holiday, we were in the remotest of diners in the desert in Arizona, my Mum was a decorator in the pottery industry and recognised the cups as ones her company made. Stranger still she turned it over and there was a number fired to the bottom - hers. Very spooky, especially as these numbers should have been taken off the cups and it should have been rejected as a seconds. All that way to drink out of a cup you decorated.

I walked into one of several pubs near where I live in London and the barmaid was someone who'd been in my class at school. More of a coincidence than you think might think as school was a boarding school on a different continent, in a country where she has always lived, before and after this.

floating along the lazy river in blizzard beach in florida, next to a guy i used to work with - took a couple of minutes for us both to realise!

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 13/08/2019 22:07

On holiday walking down the main street of the resort we were staying at in Lanzarote and my boyfriend suddenly says "hello mush" - it was our next door neighbours in a bar.
We were in our 20s and lived in flats in the and block right nxt door to each other - we were all the same age but never spoke to one other as all busy out at work. Had a nutty time together in Lanzarote inc. skinny dipping became best friends and went to each others' weddings.
Don't see them anymore but we are 30 yrs on - not together with same partners anymore but we did share some fun.

BikeRunSki · 13/08/2019 22:12

Age 14, I met my head of yearbon a gondola in Venice.

I live in Yorkshire, about 8 years ago, on holiday in Fort William, I met my cousin (from Bristol) in a Thai restaurant.

Fruitbatdancer · 13/08/2019 22:17

On blizzard beach in Walt Disney world we met someone who rented property from my dad (and who was 6 months behind on rent 😬)
Also on a family day out to a theme park 200 miles away I met a colleague who was off sick 🤒

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 13/08/2019 22:19

Went skiing with my best friend (K) from college. The only person I'd remained in regular contact with. Neither of us had any contact with other students on our module Inc. various boyfriends inc. DR and many others.

We were just lamenting this fact at Geneva airport when we looked up and saw (DR) - K's first bf at college -on his way out skiing. Stopped and had a long chat - this has never happened since and we have never randomly come across anyone from our area even though I see K regularly.

Wallabyone · 13/08/2019 22:27

BumbleBeee69 · 13/08/2019 22:51

strolling along Orchard Road, Singapore .. during a stop on a World Cruise.. I see my next door neighbour across the road WTF are the chances of that Shock

PooWillyBumBum · 13/08/2019 23:10

Walked into a shop in a random town miles away and my ex from my teens served me, didn’t recognise him at first. He’d got a Masters from Cambridge so I’d always expected he’d end up doing something fancy but turns out he’d become a teacher, got burned out and ended up there. Now we’re back in contact and he’s started another career.

PooWillyBumBum · 13/08/2019 23:11

Just realised that place doesn’t seem weird at all but it was really jarring to meet him in a shop uniform. I’d always as a kid thought he’d end up being a politician or something!

AdoptedBumpkin · 27/06/2020 01:13

Chanced upon this thread. Best one I can remember is seeing my then neighbour from London while on holiday on the Welsh coast. Not that remarkable compared to some of these stories.

In school days my friend once saw a very young, attractive female teacher in the swimming pool on holiday. The lads were a bit Envy

IdblowJonSnow · 27/06/2020 01:27

Woke up one morning in a shared dorm room in a hostel in Australia to find a girl from my course next to me. We hadn't been friends but recognised each other. Took a while to figure it out! (Both from UK)

FinnsLeftSpoon · 27/06/2020 01:30

Visiting London from thousands of miles away, took the Tube to have dinner with a friend in the East End, two stops later my cousin's daughter from home gets on

rarotonga2 · 27/06/2020 01:44

We got engaged in a European city. Everywhere was closed but we had some champagne in our hotel bar when we got back from our evening out, and got chatting to the other couple in the bar.

I very randomly saw the lady in a local shopping centre a couple of weeks later. I had no idea she lived anywhere near me!
