Online shopping- no bags

Imustbemad00 · 12/08/2019 18:20

I like ordering my shopping from tesco, but after their recent email saying they will no longer have the option of delivering in bags, I’m considering switching which is a shame as I like my clubcard points.
I don’t know why they can’t use the bag return scheme like ocado.

How does everybody who doesn’t get bagged deliveries get their shopping in? I think I have mild anxiety in social situations, especially with strangers and my home so it’s stressing me out. The delivery driver coming through my front door is not an option. So will I leave him standing there whilst I carry what I can in, or put it in bags at the door. Will they think I’m ridiculous? It seems such a waste to stand there putting it all in bags just to take it to the kitchen and take it out again. It would also make me feel really awkward as I’d feel they were becoming impatient

Also, I’m not sure I like the idea of my shopping loose in the dirty sticky crates.

OP posts:

The drivers in my area leave the crates and collect the next time I order.

Even if they were to need to bring the crate back straight after delivery; take out your shopping and give the crate back and pack once the driver has gone.

My goodness

I mean surely you don’t need a plastic bag to bring groceries from a van to your door do you !?!

fiorentina · 20/08/2019 21:24

I carry the crates to the kitchen and empty them and then give them back to the driver. They are always fine with this..

Pinktulipsarethebest · 20/08/2019 21:32

But now they will have to put large fruit and veg in plastic bags...surely keepimg the paper bags for that would make sense?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/08/2019 21:41

@PookieDo just had my delivery and none of the loose fruit and veg was in bags, it was all loose in the crate. Not that it matters to me.

OP I just have a bit ALDI bag for life type thing that I chuck all the chilled stuff out the crate and into at the door. The non chilled stuff I just leave in the hall to put away after they have gone. It's really wasteful to want new plastic bags every time to do a journey of a few meters from your hall and kitchen!

Dandelion1993 · 20/08/2019 21:42

You're being ridiculous but clearly you won't chnage.

Why not buy a crate style box from somewhere like B&m you can keep near the front door and unload your shopping into that when they arrive and carry it through.

You'll slowly find that all home delivery companies will get rid of plastic bags due to environmental pressure.

The quicker you get over it the quicker you can move on.

PookieDo · 20/08/2019 21:42

I usually get paper bags from Tesco now for fruit and veg

MsSquiz · 20/08/2019 21:46

I got an email today from Tesco advising that they're going bagless as of yesterday, that includes the paper bags.

Here's a link to their FAQs:

sparkler10 · 20/08/2019 21:47

‘I’d be the same OP. I always get bags with my delivery from Sainsburys. Makes life easier’

Precisely why we’re drowning in plastic, FFS!!!!

Widowodiw · 20/08/2019 21:56

Ffs I don’t know how people function from day today. You take the crate into your kitchen with you, empty it and return in the the delivery driver and repeat. If you
Can’t carry the crate then the driver bring it in for you. You won’t be able to just switch supermarket as they will all go down this route.

Proseccoinamug · 20/08/2019 22:03

Asda have gone bagless too

chellochello · 20/08/2019 22:04

I get delivery's from Asda - the guy just brings the crates to the door one at a time and ones he leaves the 1st one I just grab a handful of stuff and dump it on the kitchen bench and just keep going back for more - DD2 loves to help carry the lighter stuff in too - drivers have never seemed at all bothered about waiting while we do it this way they're always really nice and have a bit of a chat while I get it done - never even occurred to me to ask for bags Hmm

teddylovescustard · 20/08/2019 22:12

A few giant Ikea bags do the job and they last forever. Indestructible things they are! Just unload at the door.

shinynewapple · 21/08/2019 10:45

I was wondering the same thing myself OP. I always get the driver to carry the crates through to the kitchen anyway. I feel a bit of pressure to get them emptied (I can't move as quickly as some people) and was thinking this will put me under more pressure. I suppose the drivers just have to accept it will take a bit longer for people to get the crates emptied.

I've always used the plastic bags as bin liners - there's no extra plastic involved as I'll now need to buy bin liners to replace them.

Sorry you suffer anxiety OP and that other people are lacking in empathy for you.

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 21/08/2019 10:49

Sorry you suffer anxiety OP and that other people are lacking in empathy for you.

It is irrelevant if the OP suffers from anxiety.

The OP needs to know that all supermarkets are getting rid of plastic bags and that this is vital.

A lot of PP have suggested ways round this, which include messages suggesting she uses reusable bags.

I don't see that as lacking in empathy TBH.

60minutemakeunder · 21/08/2019 10:54

I can’t let the delivery chap in as the dog would go potty, so I just empty all the crates on the doorstep. I pile all the stuff up the stairs (tiny hallway with stairs right opposite the door.). One day I will learn to start filling from a higher step, rather than fill up the lower steps first and then having to clamber over the shopping to get it all in.

MadisonAvenue · 30/08/2019 21:55

I've noticed that I'm getting damaged items since my delivery has gone bagless.
When things were bagged, all fragile things like crisps and biscuits were put together in a bag and crated with bags of bread and rolls but now they're just put in a crate with anything. I had to complain yesterday because biscuits, crisps and chocolate were put in a crate with glass bottles and tins and the biscuits and crisps were smashed up and some of the chocolate bars were flattened, so they've refunded them.

livelyredjellybean · 30/08/2019 22:06

The crates are washed and disinfected regularly, OP - having your food in those crates is nothing to worry about!
