Online shopping- no bags

Imustbemad00 · 12/08/2019 18:20

I like ordering my shopping from tesco, but after their recent email saying they will no longer have the option of delivering in bags, I’m considering switching which is a shame as I like my clubcard points.
I don’t know why they can’t use the bag return scheme like ocado.

How does everybody who doesn’t get bagged deliveries get their shopping in? I think I have mild anxiety in social situations, especially with strangers and my home so it’s stressing me out. The delivery driver coming through my front door is not an option. So will I leave him standing there whilst I carry what I can in, or put it in bags at the door. Will they think I’m ridiculous? It seems such a waste to stand there putting it all in bags just to take it to the kitchen and take it out again. It would also make me feel really awkward as I’d feel they were becoming impatient

Also, I’m not sure I like the idea of my shopping loose in the dirty sticky crates.

Those that are saying paper bags should be used, frankly they're only very slightly better.

They have to cut down trees to make them you know and less trees is the biggest reason we're in the pickle we're in.

And recycling them is very energy intensive.

I think people who refuse to consider bagless food deliveries- save for perhaps a small number of people in specific circumstances or with health issues- need to get a grip. Sorry.

Frazzled2207 · 13/08/2019 09:37

@MountainDweller they absolutely will bring it in and put the crates on the counter top for you.

cheeserolls · 13/08/2019 09:40

Ocado used to have a bag free option but they changed it back to bags as standard each time now. Along side the product packaging it's a shit load of waste...

They need to revise their policy again along with Tesco!

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 13/08/2019 09:42

This seems to be a larger issue....
If this is a policy decision.

The presumably the supermarket will have to tolerate their delivery rounds taking longer.

SparkyBlue · 13/08/2019 09:49

I just empty everything from the crates onto
the worktops in no orderly fashion and put it all away when he is gone. He brings in his one or two crates at a time and by the time the last one is brought in I have the others emptied. I just assumed everyone did similar. We often have a bit of chit chat as well but seeing as some people refuse to let the drivers past their door I assume that would be frowned upon by those people as well.

Applejack5 · 13/08/2019 11:43

I often chat to our Tesco delivery drivers. One of them told me that they're allowing them an extra minute per delivery after the bag option is removed.

SparkyBlue · 13/08/2019 11:47

@Applejack5 it must be different over here as the drivers are always up for a chat and never overly rushed. We have never had bags and they have always had to wait for the person to unload and they will always say "don't rush yourself ". Now I could just be lucky in my area as well.

Applejack5 · 13/08/2019 11:57

I suppose it applies where they're booked up for the slot and rushing around a bit. They're not usually in a hurry here either!

jazzandh · 13/08/2019 12:06

I believe Ocado sort the returned bags (and those from other supermarkets) and then those that cannot be reused are recycled into new bags in the UK. (Apparently that is why they are grey).

MargotMoon · 13/08/2019 12:19

@C8H10N4O2 I've tipped Tesco drivers in the past. Haven't had a home delivery for ages though so maybe policy has changed

C8H10N4O2 · 13/08/2019 12:38

I've tipped Tesco drivers in the past

Interesting - it was Tesco drivers I tried to tip on the odd occasion when the order was ridiculously large (house load of teens). Possibly its not enforced rigidly or they sometimes take a chance. I assumed the policy was to stop soliciting for tips.

I think we should be able to tip drivers for a particularly large delivery or flights of stairs/extra help.

Sooverthemill · 13/08/2019 12:44

The driver will be fine with you unpacking at door and waiting for you to take to kitchen. If crate too heavy use bags or laundry basket. It's a shame you can't cope with them coming to your kitchen, my very nice chap unpacks the crates onto the worktops for me.

SilverySurfer · 13/08/2019 14:28

Such a drama over something so easily solvable. Either allow the driver to carry the crates into the kitchen or have bags or baskets by the door. I'm disabled and find the easiest is to have them deposit the items on a 2 tray trolley which I then wheel into the kitchen. Tesco drivers will normally take the crates to your kitchen if you ask - when I came out of hospital one time they even unpacked and put everything away. They are really helpful. I see you don't want them to do that but it's still easy to resolve.

Arrowfanatic · 13/08/2019 19:14

What about getting a couple of those pull along shopping trolley things (like our nans used to use but I've seen are coming back) they fold up small for easy storage and if they're never used outside you dont have to worry about mucky wheels on your carpet.

Flupibass · 13/08/2019 22:10

Or give the delivery drivers those plastic shoe covers they make you wear at swimming pools.
I don’t understand all those people who won’t let them into their kitchens. Why?

Imustbemad00 · 13/08/2019 23:55

don’t understand all those people who won’t let them into their kitchens. Why?

I hate people coming in my house, especially strangers. Partly because I don’t want the dirty shoes of delivery drivers, workmen ect on the carpet and I think partly for deeper reasons that I won’t go in to.

I cancelled my Asda delivery pass last week when my £200 shop was delivered with raw chicken on top of fresh fruit, bleach in top of fresh vegetables and tins on top of bread.
I'm all for eco friendly but, basic food hygiene should be adhered to. Asda gave me a £5 evoucher as compensation....

ZazieTheCat · 14/08/2019 01:02

@Flupibass people who’ve been physically or sexually assaulted can get uncomfortable letting people into their home

EverdeRose · 14/08/2019 03:29

I'm in the same boat OP.
At the moment I trap the dog in the kitchen while I unload the bags in the hall. Then when driver goes I carry them through into the kitchen and unpack.
I could lock the dog upstairs but i wouldn't want the driver walking through my house in his shoes to get to the kitchen.

I'd be happy if they came in some type of cardboard tray or crate or a paper bag, but it seems they'll just be in the delivery crate.
I'm not looking forward to packing and unpacking £200 of shopping on the doorstep.

I'll have a try next week, if it's too inconvenient I'll be switching to whoever will still use bags.

RebootYourEngine · 14/08/2019 04:15

EverdeRose I think in time all supermarkets will go bagless.

Online shoppers have been given the option of no bags for a long time so drivers are used to this. It isn't really any more inconvenient for them.

FixTheBone · 14/08/2019 05:15

I always ask for no bags, I generally end up with 25+....

ComeOnGordon · 14/08/2019 06:04

I’m pleased to hear that the supermarkets are stopping using plastic bags - it is such an easy way to reduce the use of plastic.

I’m in mainland Europe where no one uses plastic bags and haven’t for a long time. People mostly use those collapsible crates.

OP - you really need help for your anxiety as the stores are trying to do a good thing about a horrific environmental problem and you’re only concerned about yourself. We all need to reduce our plastic & having your shopping delivered in bags that you give back to the driver next time isn’t really doing that. Bagless is the only way really.

SamBeckett · 20/08/2019 21:08

I have something similar to them to store my veg in. mine collapse down so would not take up much storage space if you wanted your driver to off load everything at the front door.
