To leave nursing?

I hate it. But I’m not qualified to do anything else.

I want to work with dogs but I’ll likely take a big pay cut as well as have to pay for training.

AIBU to do it anyway?

You only have one life!!

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2019 16:05

Only you know whether you can afford it.

MissConductUS · 12/08/2019 16:09

Have you considered a different type of nursing, like geriatric for example? I'm in the US and the career options are a bit different here, but there are lots of settings beyond the hospital.

If it's really not your cuppa, that's fine, but don't wind up destitute while making the switch.

Gwlondon · 12/08/2019 16:10

What is your speciality?

Xen20 · 12/08/2019 16:14

Community nursing. None of it appeals to me anymore. I’m a fake. I don’t even like people. The thought of having to be amongst people all day every day makes me want to cry.

If you work with dogs, you'll have to work with people too surely?

What is it you want to do with dogs?

Jemima232 · 12/08/2019 16:27

Have you got far too much on your plate at the moment? Not enough staff and too many patients?

Would you consider a different branch of nursing?

icanhearapindrop · 12/08/2019 16:35

I have given up nursing. I was also a community nurse, and did enjoy it a bit, but hated nursing in general. It ate away at me over the years and I had no desire to work in any different role. If you can afford it, do it!

faelavie · 12/08/2019 22:39

I'm a nurse and often feel how you do now, however I wouldn't be able to take the pay cut that retraining for another job would bring. If you can, why not?
Nursing can have a way of eating away at people, especially with the myriad of bad work environments out there. Certainly not unusual and not unreasonable of you to want to quit.

Retraintoday · 12/08/2019 22:43

I'm just thinking about re-training as a nurse!
Sorry to hear you don't enjoy it.
Are you able to be specific about what you don't like?

Yanbu to want to leave. If you hate a job then it's best to leave for your own sanity. But do explore the many other areas of nursing. Working with dogs would be lovely- at least they won't talk back to you GrinGrin

Tartan333 · 13/08/2019 08:18

yanbu, I am a nurse and want to leave too. I hate the stress and how it makes me feel but struggling to afford a pay cut to do something else.

If you can then do it.

My friends cat sitter used to be a mental health nurse. She tells us as well as cat sitting, she offers “nursing” for cats such as giving them insulin injections and eye drops!! Not sure if you need some sort of license but maybe you could investigate something like that with dogs and do some bank/agency to tide you over??
