To think there's no excuse for being smelly?

eating out with DM and a lady has walked in and the smell of body odour was overpowering, so much so that it really put me off eating and made me feel sick.

what's the excuse for such poor hygiene? I've never understood it Confused

Mental health issues, cultural issues, people just don't care or don't realize they smell? 🤷🏻‍♀️

LaVieilleHarpie · 12/08/2019 15:49

There is literally NO excuse. YANBU.

Jemima232 · 12/08/2019 15:50

It's usually a mental health problem and the person has no idea.

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2019 15:50

YANBU

Other than Mental Health issues or physical disability, I can't think of any excuse.

steff13 in what culture is stinking of B.O acceptable?

MiltonRoad · 12/08/2019 15:50

They have mh issues? They have a medical condition? They take meds that cause? They have a metabolic disorder? How many reasons did you want?

bloodywhitecat · 12/08/2019 15:51

Hyperhidrosis maybe?

HugsAreMyDrugs · 12/08/2019 15:51

Medical issues?

HotChocWithCream · 12/08/2019 15:52

I don't understand this - it really makes me feel ill when I encounter it. The people I've seen have partners - why don't they tell them?

I wash thoroughly every day, use deodorant and remind my family to tell me IMMEDIATELY if they ever detect an unpleasant smell from me!

Cheeseoncrumpets · 12/08/2019 15:54

YANBU. Ive struggled with mental health issues in the past and am quite annoyed to see it used as an excuse for poor personal hygiene.

I was wondering the same thing.

bluebluezoo · 12/08/2019 15:55

Might not be poor hygiene. There are medical causes like fish odour syndrome and hyperhydrosis.

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2019 15:56

You can be as annoyed as you like but no all MH issues are the same as yours.

Stuckinthebathroom · 12/08/2019 15:56

YANBU at all

I sat next to a woman on the bus once who stank so strongly of cheesy wotsits that I missed my stop and had to walk a mile back in the pissing rain.

WhatAGreatDay · 12/08/2019 15:59

I volunteer for a charity and the homeless people often smell really bad. People with mental illnesses can sometimes smell. Some people live in tents or inadequate housing. Some families all live in one room together in hostels with shared bathrooms down the hall. There are excuses.

ohflowerofscotland · 12/08/2019 15:59

Unless there is a genuine, genuine medical excuse then there is no need to not have basic personal hygiene.

I've struggled with MH for years but I would never leave the house knowing I hadn't washed or at least put a bit of deodorant on.

I've had to stop what I'm eating because the smell was so terrible Sad

Homelessness and poverty.
Sofa surfing can make it difficult to wash regularly and living in temporary accommodation there may be a lack of clothes washing facilities. Laundries can be expensive and not always easy to access also.
Poverty can make it difficult to wash - and even more so to dry- clothes regularly.
Yes, it's unpleasant, but you have no idea of people's life circumstances.

WhatAGreatDay · 12/08/2019 16:00

by homeless I mean rough sleepers. I'm aware that notall homeless people are actually on the street.

FurrySlipperBoots · 12/08/2019 16:00

I was at school with a girl who had some sort of terrible BO problem. It wasn't just normal stinky pits, it was absolutely inexplicably awful. It must have been down to a medical problem, maybe hyperhydrosis, though she had terrible greasy hair too.

So yes, there is an excuse.

ohflowerofscotland · 12/08/2019 16:02

Obviously it goes without saying that homeless people are likely to smell..

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 16:02

Some people have a medical condition where no matter how often they wash or how much deodorant they use, the smell still comes through...so yes, there is an excuse. Quite short sighted of you really.

PixieLumos · 12/08/2019 16:02

I’m pretty sure no one wants to smell and it’s rare for someone to simply not care, unless there’s MH issues involved - they probably have no idea! Who’s to tell them? It’s an awkward subject.

haverhill · 12/08/2019 16:03

FurrySlipperBoots was this in the 1980s in a village starting with W?

Youmadorwhat · 12/08/2019 16:05

“Unless there is a genuine, genuine medical excuse then there is no need to not have basic personal hygiene.”

So what are you suggesting? That they should wear a fucking sign on their back saying “I know I’m smelly , but stop judging because I have a “genuine, genuine” medical excuse!, please ask for more details”

Good god some of you lot are so ignorant!!There are MANY medical reasons (cancer included)that can cause someone to smell!!

Propertyofhood · 12/08/2019 16:06

I know a woman who smells very badly of BO - like, proper onion BO whenever she is in the vicinity, it permeates everything, sort of BO.

She is a perfectly normal woman in every respect, has a job, 3 kids, has a beautiful house which is immaculately decorated, good looking and successful husband, she just smells really bad. And it's all the time, including when we have been on proper dressed up evenings out, where she is wearing a lovely dress, has makeup on etc.

I have come to the conclusion that she must have a medical problem and I feel quite sorry for her really.

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 16:06

Also, people might have had some sort of brain injury, so they aren't as clued up about cleanliness or forgetful / confused. There are lots of health reasons which you might not be aware of just by looking at a person.
