Sorry, not a classic AIBU, posting for traffic

Family are on their way over snd have said they are bringing champagne. DD is 11 dsys old. I know the guidelines allow light drinking, but is that still the case with such a tiny baby?

I'd have a few sips but not a glassful. I'm basing that on no medical knowledge whatsoever.

ParadiseLaundry · 11/08/2019 15:36

Yanbu, enjoy Smile

And congratulations!

DS2 is 8 days old and ebf and have really been fancying a beer, the only thing stopping me is I think it will make me knackered! Grin

notacooldad · 11/08/2019 15:38

Our health visitor told us not to worry about the odd drink when feeding. I can't remember the reason but something about your body metabolising the alcohol.

gemwhitt · 11/08/2019 15:39

Of course you can! Enjoy. You deserve it. Also read this from an expert.

It’s extremely dangerous

You could spill some and that would be a waste!

Seriously, enjoy..you have earned it

CraftyGin · 11/08/2019 15:40

The level of alcohol in breastmilk is the same as the level of alcohol in your blood.

The drink drive limit is 0.08% in your blood (after a large glass or more) compared to 12% in a typical bottle of white.

Sauc3 · 11/08/2019 15:40

Latest research says you can drink as much as you like. Even the breastmilk of a completely inebriated mother could be labelled as alcohol-free. Orange juice would naturally have more alcohol in it.

Enjoy!

FenellaMaxwell · 11/08/2019 15:41

Have several glasses if you like - the guidelines allow for more than light drinking now. The amount of alcohol you would need to consume for enough to get into your breastmilk is actually loads - you’d pretty much need to get paralytic.

If you have 4-6 drinks, your breastmilk is about as alcoholic as a glass of orange juice.

NewAccount270219 · 11/08/2019 15:41

The midwife doing my breastfeeding class said that the only danger of drinking while breastfeeding is either dropping the baby or falling asleep on them, ie that if you're not actually drunk it's fine. You'd have to be paralytically drunk to pass on a significant amount of alcohol through breast milk.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 11/08/2019 15:42

As long as your not too drunk to hold baby it’s fine.

Unicornhamster · 11/08/2019 15:43

Guidance has changed now apparently, my health visitor said the alcohol enters the blood not the breastmilk. I am feeding twins and she told me no need to pump and dump if I have a few.

Doubleraspberry · 11/08/2019 15:45

I drank most of a bottle of champagne within an hour of having one of my babies. It had been a pregnancy craving. Her first breastfeed was epically long and the photos show me clutching my glass throughout. The midwives laughed.

Buddytheelf85 · 11/08/2019 15:46

We were also told by the midwife in antenatal class that it was fine. Congratulations and enjoy!

Theworldcouldbemymollusc · 11/08/2019 15:49

Yup. Recent evidence says if you are not to drunk to drop your baby you are not too drunk to breastfeed as alcohol gets transmitted to breastmilk in much more minute proportions than previously thought

MRex · 11/08/2019 16:06

You'll be fine, enjoy!

dustarr73 · 11/08/2019 16:06

Have a glass of champers and enjoy it.I used to have a glass of wine.It was the only thing kept me sane sometimes.

iklboo · 11/08/2019 16:10

After having DS DH brought me a care package of pate, Brie & a mini bottle of fizz Grin

TSSDNCOP · 11/08/2019 16:11

Enjoy it! Make sure it’s so cold your fingers can hardly hold the glass.

Sianlouise432 · 11/08/2019 16:11

I didn't get the memo! I've been sober for 14 months 😭

Sciurus83 · 11/08/2019 16:11

It's fine, crack on!

dustarr73 · 11/08/2019 16:12

I didn't get the memo! I've been sober for 14 months 😭

@Sianlouise432 longest 14 months of your life ]grin]

YouKnowOneDayAtATime · 11/08/2019 16:16

I'm basing that on no medical knowledge whatsoever.

So why bother to post?

DramaAlpaca · 11/08/2019 16:17

I had a lovely glass of champagne in the postnatal ward, hours after having DS1. SIL sneaked a bottle in & pulled the curtains round us Grin

IntoValhalla · 11/08/2019 16:21

Crack on and enjoy it OP!
As others have said, if you’re sober enough to hold your baby safely, then you are perfectly safe to feed your baby too Smile
The way it was described to me by a lactation consultant, was that even if you were dying from alcohol poisoning, the amount of alcohol in your breastmilk would be like dropping a shot of neat vodka into an Olympic sized swimming pool!

Janek · 11/08/2019 16:30

@Doubleraspberry that is the best story i've ever heard Grin.
