Sorry, not a classic AIBU, posting for traffic

Family are on their way over snd have said they are bringing champagne. DD is 11 dsys old. I know the guidelines allow light drinking, but is that still the case with such a tiny baby?

My Mum did when she had me in the 80's Grin

DeRigueurMortis · 11/08/2019 16:39

I don't see an issue at all.

The risk is making sure your not woozy after so long not drinking that impacts you're ability to parent, not any "contamination" of breast milk.

As a pp said make sure its beautifully cold, sip it slowly and savour it Grin

Enjoy. It.

Champagne, white wine, g&t all fine ime. Strong stomach required for post red wine or coffee nappy. How I enjoyed coffee after she lost interest in the breast at 8/9 months - watching her bro Feb half term was much more fun.

Fivebyfivesq · 11/08/2019 17:14

I did it, he seems fine! 😂

DCIRozHuntley · 11/08/2019 17:16

Congratulations!

As PP have said, alcohol level in breastmilk is same as alcohol level in the blood - approx 0.1% if you are over the drink drive limit.

I choose not to drink when breastfeeding as we co-sleep and any alcohol is a no no if you're bedsharing.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 11/08/2019 17:28

I drank champagne and breastfed sitting in bed about half an hour after giving birth, while eating bacon sandwiches. Was fabulous.

cupoftea84 · 11/08/2019 17:32

NCT and several doctors have told me by the time you've drink too much to feed your baby you are too drunk to hold them. Very little if any gets into the milk. A glass will be fine. Congratulations

LadyRannaldini · 11/08/2019 18:13

Go for it but try and keep away from hot curries, as I learned to my very messy cost.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 11/08/2019 18:52

And so the pendulum swings right back to where it was in the 1970s when I had my DC - and was firmly told by midwives and HV to have a bottle of stout every day to help my milk supply Shock
I hated the stuff, but used to dutifully down a bottle a day, as I was assured that it would be good for my DC... Grin

Windygate · 11/08/2019 18:59

My DM was told to have a bottle of stout every day post birth. I can remember her forcing it down after DSis arrived, DM has no taste for stout.
Actually she had her hysterectomy in a Cottage hospital and all the women on the ward got a bottle of stout every evening to avoid low iron levels :)

I once worked with a highly experienced abd well respected lactation consultant and her take in this was ‘ a glass or two of wine is fine, just don’t start in the vodka and red bull’
Enjoy!

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 11/08/2019 19:05

Go for it and enjoy! You can have more than a glass guilt free.

Booksandwine80 · 11/08/2019 19:06

It’s fine, have two!Grin seriously the amount you would have to drink to get into your milk is huge so a glass or two is absolutely fine

Sparklingbrook · 11/08/2019 19:08

I struggled with BF and the midwife advised a glass of wine before a feed to relax. Grin

Siameasy · 11/08/2019 19:08

Absolutely fine and I wish I had!!

Proseccoinamug · 11/08/2019 19:08

The level of alcohol in breastmilk is the same as the level of alcohol in your blood.

TOTALLY not true!! All the studies have shown that hardly any alcohol passes into breast milk. It’s also reabsorbed so no need to pump and dump.

If you can remember you’ve got a baby, you’re safe to breastfeed! Enjoy!

Hotbiscuits · 11/08/2019 19:09

Go for it. I didn’t as was too knackered to risk any additional dizziness!

Proseccoinamug · 11/08/2019 19:10

The ‘if you can remember you’ve got a baby, you’re safe to breastfeed’ advice came from a lactation consultant who received an MBE for her work last year.

Chocolatedaim · 11/08/2019 19:11

I haven’t given birth yet (although I’m overdue) and I’ve put a bottle of fizz and a bottle of my favourite wine in the fridge. I’m absolutely gasping 😆

Confusedandworried321 · 11/08/2019 19:12

YANBU, enjoy your glass!!!!

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 11/08/2019 19:22

I had champagne and more than 1 glass the day all 3 of my babies came home, it’s fine. They are all healthy children so no damage was caused via my milk

Enjoy your champagne 🍾 and congratulations on the baby

Grundoncalling · 11/08/2019 19:44

I had it and I enjoyed it guilt freeGrin

Thanks all for the unanimously reassuring advice
