Hamleys demo lady left dd 6 in tears.

Summer hols day out, theatre and hamleys.

Having fun trying all the toys on display and v small budget to buy a toy.

Older dd goes to lady for hand tattoo. I asked younger if she wanted one she was shy and said no. However once older has one she wants one. So she gets in position and very curtly lady says 'no. Its not a freebie for all children it's a demo. I can't do another child' no smiles, no kindness and she looked as hard as nails as dd face crumpled and starts to cry.

Not a big cry! In the past they have always dine both dc, in hamleys and harrods.
And we have actually brought the set into the past but it's the fun and part of the toy shop experience to have something done there!

Not the experience I expected from hamleys of all places. Or was she right!

Most of the posters saying yabu would probably have bought the thing their child was so entranced by (I would) so I’m not sure where the school of hard knocks comes in?
Op said no, salesperson should have said yes?

Marnie76 · 11/08/2019 20:57

Oh yes headintheclouds you know us all so well. Of actually you don’t.

Marnie76 · 11/08/2019 20:58

Or

TotallyWipedout · 11/08/2019 21:00

Struggling with 'rankles'. As you were.

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 11/08/2019 21:02

Hercule, dc felting the snow being pumped into bowl, watched the flying thing being flung around the room, played with the pig walking up and down its cage, one even sang at the kareokee machine.

One also had a tattoo. The other had a dose of extreme unpleasantness.
They both left with gift.

Re posters saying demo people paid on commission. One demo person would have made commission out of us that day. And I do agree its a tough sell and tough job.

extreme unpleasantness
More like extreme hyperbole.

Not sure what you mean, really, OP. It sounds like they had a great day.

PinkyPrincessy · 11/08/2019 21:50

Sorry you went through this. My DD would be devestated.

Marnie76 · 11/08/2019 21:53

Then you need to teach her to be more resiliant

Emptyspacex · 11/08/2019 21:56

On another note does hamleys still have the scary haunted stairs? If that makes sense sorry haven't been since I was 5.

This thread really makes me want to go to hamleys. Bet it's changed a lot in 20 years.

Emptyspacex · 11/08/2019 22:03

I've just been looking at photos and videos of hamleys and now I'm desperate to go!
How sad am i..

CarolDanvers · 11/08/2019 22:04

resilient

Argeles · 11/08/2019 22:04

I would’ve said in a loud voice, ‘you’ve just missed out on a sale now.’ I’d consider complaining to Hamleys too.

notacooldad · 11/08/2019 22:04

What a crock of shit! You are ramping this up now!

What's up with ' sorry darling, the lady couldn't do both of you and you did say you didnt want it doing didn't you? Never mind, we have that kit at home we can do it when we get in. now come along, lets see what else we can find"

Choice4567 · 11/08/2019 22:12

Also you keep mentioning how much you’ve bought in the past. How on earth would anyone working there know that?! ‘Oh bother I should do another demo tattoo, I’ve just remembered last year that lady bought sweets. And a toy set the year before’

FifteenYemenRoadYemen · 11/08/2019 22:24

Starting to wonder if it was actually you who cried and not your daughter with the way you're going on.. my god. Hmm

KnightError · 11/08/2019 22:30

My DD would be devestated

Apart from the spelling error... WTAF?? Devastated because she couldn't have a freebie in a toy shop?? Give me strength. Your DD might be devastated by all kinds of things, but that surely isn't one of them. If it is, you need to get her priorities right.

OP, your most recent post makes no sense at all. I have re-read it several times, and still don't understand it.

TotallyWipedout · 11/08/2019 22:33

I honestly felt she wanted to hurt dd

Quite right. She looked at your DD and deliberately decided that she was worthy of being hurt. Confused

PaperFlowers4 · 11/08/2019 22:45

I would’ve said in a loud voice, ‘you’ve just missed out on a sale now.’

OP never intended on buying, and the demo lady knew it. Salespeople get good at clocking who is a real potential customer and who is just a timewaster. Its literally part of the job for a commission based salesperson.

The only people who ever say “you’ve just missed out on a sale” are the people who weren’t going to buy anything in the first place but still expect you to fawn over them proffering rainbows and kittens, and get huffy when you withdraw your attention no matter polite and professional you are.

The actual people who really were going to buy but for whatever reason decide not to never ever say it, even though you’re both thinking it. it’s gutting when it happens Wink

HeadintheiClouds · 11/08/2019 23:06

Anyone who imagined some random shop assistant “honestly wanted to hurt dd” is obviously suffering from some form of hysteria which is being fed by this thread.
Little wonder the dd is also highly strung.

BenWillbondsPants · 11/08/2019 23:37

I would’ve said in a loud voice, ‘you’ve just missed out on a sale now.’

Then you'd have made yourself look like a right tool.

APinkMouse · 11/08/2019 23:40

I would’ve said in a loud voice, ‘you’ve just missed out on a sale now.’

Oh God - someone's never worked in retail Grin

MiniMum97 · 11/08/2019 23:44

Of course Yanbu. Only on mumsnet would you get the responses you have had here. The woman was sat in a toy shop. Of course children are going to want whatever it is that's being offered. Of course she should have given the child a tattoo and she should certainly not have been rude and curt to anyone especially not a child. Completely unnecessary. She's in the wrong job.

Ginmel · 12/08/2019 05:12

Good thing Hamleys sells good sock puppets though isn't it?
