Hamleys demo lady left dd 6 in tears.

Summer hols day out, theatre and hamleys.

Having fun trying all the toys on display and v small budget to buy a toy.

Older dd goes to lady for hand tattoo. I asked younger if she wanted one she was shy and said no. However once older has one she wants one. So she gets in position and very curtly lady says 'no. Its not a freebie for all children it's a demo. I can't do another child' no smiles, no kindness and she looked as hard as nails as dd face crumpled and starts to cry.

Not a big cry! In the past they have always dine both dc, in hamleys and harrods.
And we have actually brought the set into the past but it's the fun and part of the toy shop experience to have something done there!

Not the experience I expected from hamleys of all places. Or was she right!

If you spent £26 between two, I doubt they care if you go back or not. Why not go to a school fete and see if you can scrounge some freebies.

Aridane · 11/08/2019 19:36

The more you post, the less I believe that the demonstrator was 'curt'. Sound more like she has excellent CF detection abilities

Indeed!

usernamexox · 11/08/2019 19:40

The demonstrated was rude, there are nicer ways to convey the same message but you should have diverted /distracted your child and not made a big deal of it to build her resilience.
Anyway, the toys in Hamleys are really crap quality so YABU to have taken them there in the first placeSmile

fascicle · 11/08/2019 19:47

Do Hamley's really want to be represented by demonstrators whose charm slips and who are abrupt to customers once they judge that a purchase might not be made?

I'm amazed that so many posters on this thread a) think that the demonstrator's behaviour was ok b) think that OP has been entitled/cheeky c) do not recognise that the incident descibed by the OP represents a poor business strategy.

Aridane · 11/08/2019 19:48

You set her expectations OP, so she cried when they weren't met. Basically, she would have cried whether the lady was curt, she would have cried whether the lady was polite

Spot on

limitedperiodonly · 11/08/2019 19:51

Hamleys promotes itself as an international tourist destination in an area packed with entertainment attractions.

It is also a toy shop.

Come on, don't lie about the nature of the business.

The woman should have been nice.

CarolDanvers · 11/08/2019 19:57

Nonsense.

Kerrywerrywoo1 · 11/08/2019 20:03

Oh dear...child cries because she cannot have what she wants. Mums upset and outraged.

Life eh.

PumpkinPie2016 · 11/08/2019 20:14

The lady shouldn't have been curt to a child but maybe her comment was directed more at you, the adult, than your daughter?

She was demonstrating her product in the hope of selling it. It was probably clear after doing DD1 a tatoo that you were not going to buy the kit. Obviously, you don't have to buy it but to then expect her to 'demo' it again on DD2 is cheeky I'm afraid.

If you already have the kit at home then really, neither girl needed to get a tatoo done because they could have it done at home.

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 11/08/2019 20:23

I did distract my child.

Limited I agree.

It's like bad service in john Lewis, it prides itself on Cs so bad service rankels more than somewhere like KFC..

We are lucky we are pretty close to hamleys, some people travel from all over to have weekend in London including special trip to hamleys..
I'd hate for anyone's child to be spoken to like that!

Great, someone’s now encouraging op to complain, and you might get a voucher Hmm

OP better get her best "compo face" ready... 🙄

Loulalollipop · 11/08/2019 20:26

Yanbu, we’ve been a few times, my dd’s take their own money, try out the demo stalls and then decide what to buy. From what i’ve seen with other families this is the norm? That’s the whole Hamley’s experience and that’s why you pay a third more in there, for the experience!

limitedperiodonly · 11/08/2019 20:30

People on here are such cunts

CarolDanvers · 11/08/2019 20:31

@limitedperiodonly

Yes.

sqirrelfriends · 11/08/2019 20:32

YANBU, It sounds like that particular staff member was very badly suited for the job. I feel for your DD, it must have been horrible to be knocked back like that.

I wonder how the posters saying YABU would feel if someone spoke to their DC in such a manner?

HeadintheiClouds · 11/08/2019 20:33

Cunts? How delightful you sound. You’re one of the people on here.

limitedperiodonly · 11/08/2019 20:35

My Mumsnet Miseryguts Bingo Card is complete with 'compo' Grin

Their kids are probably used to it having been brought up in The School Of Hard Knocks Hmm

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 11/08/2019 20:38

Pumpkin this is the thing. I've done many crappie cs facing jobs!
If it was me I would have been ultra kind to dc and explained to dp, I'm so sorry, we used to do lots but now boss says only one, I'm so sorry, but there is hair over there or have you seen the special snow!

There were so many ways she could have been kind and diplomatic. I honestly felt she wanted to hurt dd. It was all addressed to dd as well not us!!

Oh, bonus points for someone ticking me off about swearing.

If only i had a better vocab

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 11/08/2019 20:39

Arf Carol Grin

Our dc get told no, enough times. This was special holiday treat day!

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 11/08/2019 20:42

Limited I have not seen you around for a while, not under that name anyway.

Now you see, if you had ticked me off, I would have taken it on board Grin

So say yes and buy the tattoo kit. Don’t blame the salesperson for not giving it away.

BenWillbondsPants · 11/08/2019 20:49

This is the weirdest thread.
