Am retiring soon so want to relocate away from the rat race but everywhere I consider away from the Home Counties seems to be regarded as a dump. Money goes further away from the SE, I thought about Norfolk which is within reasonable distance of civilisation but my friends think that it is backwards/racist. Is it true that Lincs/Cambs/Norfolk is best avoided. AIBU to move?

I am compiling a list of potentials and will let you know my assessment of these places once I have visited

I'm not sure anyone will give a shit.

Freefrops · 11/08/2019 14:12

^^ lol 😂😂😂😂

Justaboy · 11/08/2019 14:43

Perhaps OP get a caravan and become a travller?, that sounds nice if you don't like it there move on, if they don't like you there they'll move you on;!

Very democratic;!

KUGA · 11/08/2019 14:43

Avoid Walsall and.Erdington in the west Midlands.
Grimsby and Norwich avoid at all costs.
Birmingham has nice areas, Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands is lovely, especially Four Oaks, Mere Green.Boldmere and Streetly.
Ive lived in those areas, so know what I am talking about. Bristol, depending on area, fab. But remember, theres good and bad everywhere.
Good luck for the future.

Justaboy · 11/08/2019 14:54

Oi! there is no comparasion betwixt Grimsby and the fair City Of Narwich:)

Girlofgold · 11/08/2019 14:59

I take it you guys aren't young. Your friends sound extremely parochial.

MeowTseTung · 11/08/2019 15:04

OP, move to Scunthorpe, it's got your name on it Grin

Failing that, stay down south (Lightwater by any chance?)

Snoopdogsbitch · 11/08/2019 15:09

Agree with so many PPs- you absolute snob. Stay away from Scotland- we don't appreciate snobs or your SE money wafting in as though you own the place and forcing house prices up for local people. You sound awful.

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/08/2019 15:09

I have lived in the Cotswolds, I have had the thatched cottage with honeysuckle round the door in a picturesque little village with a shop and a pub and a church and I have never felt so lonely in my life.

I have lived in a grim part of London and felt more at home.

I have lived in areas that are being suggested and the idea of fields and countryside whilst being miles from anywhere is my idea of Hell.

Whilst you can take on board areas that are being suggested it is up to you how you feel about these places.

It is about how at home you feel there.

I still think moving away from your friends and your support network and starting again in a village where as an outsider there is a possibility that no one will speak to you above saying please and thank you in a shop for a few years and your friends not visiting because you have moved could be a big possibility.

The happiest retirees I know have all bought small flats in central London and got rid of their cars.

PortiaCastis · 11/08/2019 15:10

^^^ correct, in fact a very good assessment

Snoopdogsbitch · 11/08/2019 15:11

Exactly Sargass why would anyone care?! OP you are a bell-end.

MereDintofPandiculation · 11/08/2019 15:12

I had no idea there was so much anger directed at our capital city. Maybe because of The other annoying aspect of London is that they get all the bloody money and then moan that other parts of the country are backwards. Maybe stop taking all the money, then?!?

For example "Over the last 10 years, Londoners enjoyed an annual average of £708 of transport spending per person, while just £289 was spent for each person in the north of England, the analysis found." (August 2018). Money being spent on HS2 when train connections in the N are dire. Money being thrown at a Garden Bridge when so much could be done with that money round here (OK, I know that's finally died). People coming on to Mumsnet explaining how £50,000 isn't really a good salary. And then crap the wording of the OPs post. Are you surprised that not everyone in the north of England is a fan of London?

virginmojito · 11/08/2019 15:32

“People coming on to Mumsnet explaining how £50,000 isn't really a good salary”

Well it’s not a good salary at all if a studio flat is £500k minimum, is it. Try buying property in London and then come back and let us know how wealthy you feel on £50k. The fact you can buy x,y,z in Yorkshire is neither her nor there.

MrsPworkingmummy · 11/08/2019 15:35

@virginmojito I agree with you and I live in the North East where property prices are lower than London

Teateaandmoretea · 11/08/2019 15:45

I suggest you try Croydon rather than Kensington.

virginmojito · 11/08/2019 15:46

Its all relative, obviously and parts of London do feel like a different economy, almost a different culture, to huge swathes if the UK and this gulf seems to be widening. It’s hardly surprising people find it hard to relate.

SaveKevin · 11/08/2019 15:50

Most people in London and the south east don’t want hs2 either.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 11/08/2019 15:55

Parts of Norfolk are a bit racist

Parts of ANYWHERE are a bit racist! All places are made up of a mix of folk and each has their share of racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic, Islamophobic, anti-semitic, knuckle dragging wankers. That's just life Blush

virginmojito · 11/08/2019 16:09

I agree there are people everywhere who are racist, but where I live in London I can honestly say, I’m yet to meet anyone who voted for Brexit. I am not saying everyone who voted Brexit is racist, but it is a different attitude. So when you hear about this “voice if the people,” you think, who on earth are these “people” and where the hell are they? Well, obviously, Brexit is happening, which shows there are parts of the country where the prevailing mentality is very different and this can feel quite alienating if you’re not used to it.

shushymcshush · 11/08/2019 16:17

Exactly what @Abstractedobstructed said

rubyroot · 11/08/2019 16:20

It does sound like you are sayi g people who vote brexit are little englanders. Please don't forget (before you start talking utter shit) that 52% of people in this country voted for leaving the EU for a wjole host of reasons. Have you heard/seen how these EU leaders operate. Junker the drunker who wanted an EU army, is an absolute pisshead and has turned up to conferences with one brown shoe on and a black one. EU leaders who want to 'colonise' Britain. These power crazed fools make me sick. Its not democratic and the UK ends up being ruled by even bigger tools than we are currently ruled by. And if you're not happy with things, you are more likely to protest and get changes in your own country than a power crazed EU.

eggsandwich · 11/08/2019 16:25

I’m from Norfolk and your friends are talking rubbish.

Teateaandmoretea · 11/08/2019 16:45

I agree there are people everywhere who are racist, but where I live in London I can honestly say, I’m yet to meet anyone who voted for Brexit.

London and the Home Counties are hardly the same. Voting leave = racist is a pretty lazy/daft assumption to make anyway

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 11/08/2019 16:53

Might just be me but ..... I fail to see what connection voting to leave has with being racist. If none, then I'm not sure why you made the link.

And ..... there will be plenty of people who live alongside you in London that voted to leave.

bigKiteFlying · 11/08/2019 17:07

The happiest retirees I know have all bought small flats in central London and got rid of their cars.

DH lived centrally in London as a student and said it was great – everything is on your doorstep.

Though he also lived in Brighon - and loved the beach and the entire area.

I grew up in a village and have never wanted to live in one again- we seem happiest in suburbs of cites with good transport even small towns aren’t for us.

I think DickieDonkey needs to figure out what's most important to live near for them and then explore.
