What age for ears pierced?

Gottastopspendingmoney · 10/08/2019 19:18

Almost 8 year old is asking more and more to get her ears pierced.

I am not going to let her yet. I say she can get them done when she is 18Grin.

But just wondering what age parents have allowed them to get done.

I am thinking 10 / 11 at the very youngest but I will happily push it longer than that.

She did tell me the other day that it would have been easier if I had got them done as a baby Hmm

Bigger. Still can't get it. Maybe it's an iPad thing.

Yabbers · 10/08/2019 20:02

I’ve never had mine done, I don’t see the point of earrings. DD can have hers done when I don’t need to consent for it, or have anything to do with them.

Atlasta · 10/08/2019 20:02

My DD had them pierced at 8. I would not have allowed it any younger.
One of her friends (8) has 2 or 3 ear piercings in each ear- no way I'm allowing that!Shock
Thankfully she just likes wearing the same simple pair of studs.
I was 11 when I got my ears pierced.

Rachie1973 · 10/08/2019 20:03

One of mine asked at 6 and one at 8. I made sure the understood cleaning them and that it hurts and let them.

DramaAlpaca · 10/08/2019 20:04

viques it's two dashes before & after.

formerbabe · 10/08/2019 20:04

@viques

You need to do two dashes in front and two dashes at the end

Loads of DD1’s class have them done... she’s 5. She asked me when she’s allowed to have them done, I told her we’d discuss it again when she’s 13 but explained that it isn’t a necessity, you can live a perfectly fulfilling life without it! She said she didn’t think she wanted them done but felt like she ‘should’ because everyone else did! I had mine pierced at 9 after hassling my mum for months. Don’t think I’ve worn earrings since I was 10.

DramaAlpaca · 10/08/2019 20:07

I was 15 before my DM allowed me to get my ears pierced. She thought pierced ears were 'common' Confused Then she liked the look of mine so much she got her own done, at 43 Grin

crisscrosscranky · 10/08/2019 20:07

DD was 8 (nearly 9) and one of the last girls in her class to get hers done.

7/8 seems to be the norm here (were in Essex if it helps).

She'll be 16 for she's allowed a second hole though!

MrsPworkingmummy · 10/08/2019 20:09

10/11 we haven't crossed that bridge with DD yet

Cobblersandhogwash · 10/08/2019 20:10

I've told dd 16. I expect she'll start agitating to have them done at 14.

mybabyisteething · 10/08/2019 20:12

My daughter got them done a few days after they started the summer holidays last year - she was just 5. She had asked repeatedly and i told her that it would hurt. She said she didn't mind.. so we got them done and she LOVES them.

I was 8 when i had mine done.

amy85 · 10/08/2019 20:14

I got dd's done when she was a baby....ds asked when he was 7 and got them done then

PixieLumos · 10/08/2019 20:15

I was 5 when I got mine pierced - so were a lot of my friends. I thought that was pretty normal until I found out apparently otherwise on mumsnet. I would let my DC have them done at the same age - I really don’t see the big deal? Do people really think people grow up to think ‘oh I wish I didn’t have my ears pierced as a child’ - no, because if you really decide you don’t want earrings in anymore, you just don’t wear them.

Carpetburns · 10/08/2019 20:15

I'm a Year 6 teacher and it's very common for children to get their ears pierced right at the start of the summer holidays- so that they have time to heal before starting secondary school. I think it's a nice way to celebrate the end of primary school too.

SoyDora · 10/08/2019 20:17

I don’t actively wish I hadn’t had them done as a child, but it was a complete waste of time/money/effort. I’ve never worn earrings since.

DRamaAlpaca and Former babe. Thank you ! Never noticed it was two dashes.

stupid viques

NCB2019 · 10/08/2019 20:19

My dd got hers done the first day of the summer holidays between reception and year 1. She was almost 5.5 years. She said it hurt but didn't cry. I did all the aftercare for her and they healed with no problem. I took them out for her before school on PE days and put them in again when we got home. By the time she had turned 6 she could take them out herself at school and would put them in an envelope in her bag, then I'd put them in at home. By year 2 she was fine at putting them in again too.

She's now asking for a second set of piercings in her ears. She's about to go in to year 5 so I've told her the end of year 6!

Montsti · 10/08/2019 20:19

I’ve said minimum 10 for my dds but that is getting closer so I’m hoping ideally 12/13...

dollydaydream114 · 10/08/2019 20:19

I think it depends on the child and whether they're conscientious enough for the aftercare and hygiene - I'm guessing for most kids that would be around 8ish, maybe a bit older.

I had mine done for my 9th or 10th birthday I think. My adult sister paid for it as a present.

I wouldn't let a kid of any age get their ears pierced with a gun. I'd take them to a proper piercer to get it done with a needle.

RedSheep73 · 10/08/2019 20:20

10 here, mainly because that's how old I was. Old enough to understand that there will be pain involved!

Jayneisagirlsname · 10/08/2019 20:22

My dd is 8 and has asked for the first time. I'm thinking 11 for her because she's likely to panic and change her mind if she tries now. Only a couple of girls in her year have them done.

I had mine done at 15 (Mum said 16 so I felt like a real rebel, though mum took me!).

My Mum always told me that if you got them done too young, they wouldn't be in the middle as your ears change as you grow up. Was that a load of rubbish she'd made up?!

MarshaBradyo · 10/08/2019 20:23

I never did mine so maybe never, if lucky. Or 16

flumposie · 10/08/2019 20:25

My 9 year old daughter had her ears pierced at the start of this summer holiday.

beela · 10/08/2019 20:25

My mum told me 16. When I got to 16 I wasn't fussed so I've never had mine done.

I've said the same to dd. She's only 5 at the moment so I've got 11 years to stand firm Grin
