To think adults believing in ghosts are odd

Hi,

Aibu to think grown adults believing in ghosts is a bit odd?

I have an acquaintance who is also going on about going on ghost hunts and 'investigations' at supposed haunted sights. Of course they always seem to come back from them and say the evenings where 'quiet'.

I feel it's a bit odd that a grown adult can believe in this sort of thing. They're obviously not hurting anyone with this hobby but I find it so strange they're certain that ghosts exist.

Unless you have seen one you aren't expected to understand.....

LagunaBubbles · 09/08/2019 12:25

My DH has seen a ghost, an old man sitting on the bed in the nursing home he worked in who had died earlier. He's anything but odd. He's the most level headed person I know and also didn't believe in ghosts until this happened.

Mageton · 09/08/2019 12:26

I find it strange that so many people are 100% certain they don't exist. I'm on the fence myself..seen a few things that make me wonder.

TheBadNeighbour · 09/08/2019 12:27

You could say the same about people believing in a god?

Anyway I’d like to believe in the paranormal as I find it fascinating but ... all the times I’ve been to “most haunted places” across the world, fuck all has ever happened so currently, I don’t believe in it. I will however keep trying to prove myself wrong

ImNotYourGranny · 09/08/2019 12:28

I'm certain that ghosts don't exist. Until I'm home alone and there's weird noises in the night, then I'm hiding under the duvet crying for my mum. Blush

Constance1234 · 09/08/2019 12:28

I find it odd that people are so sure that they don’t exist!

Lifecraft · 09/08/2019 12:29

Unless you have seen one you aren't expected to understand

Yes, this is the lie trotted out by all the believers...if you saw one, you'd believe. Errr...no. If I saw a ghost, I'd get down to the docs first thing and demand a brain scan, to see what's causing my hallucinations. Because we have evidence that something like a brain tumour can cause hallucinations, but there's no evidence for ghosts.

It is also strange that people who "see" ghosts are always people who lack critical thinking skills in the first place. It's as if ghosts are attracted to people open to believing in made up drivel.

Cornettoninja · 09/08/2019 12:30

I don’t believe in ghosts as such but I do wonder about energy.

Some fairly respected scientific theories aren’t far off supernatural at times (I forget the name but there was a really respected scientist who gave a talk on AI and concluded that there was a high probability that we are already living in a simulation) there’s some convincing, particularly to a layperson, woo-type stuff out there with theoretical scientific backing.

I don’t believe that aunty Mabel wants to tell me which floorboard her silver forks are under but I believe that whatever energy creates consciousness isn’t fully understood and could be up to some freaky stuff.

nothingmore · 09/08/2019 12:30

I think you might all need to read Paranormality. It explains how the supernatural can be explained by human psychology.

Is it not the same about believing in fairies?

Yanbu

Bluntness100 · 09/08/2019 12:30

Yes, I'm with you op. If they existed and were as common as people made out, everyone knows someone who has "seen" one, it would be proven.

The fact it's not shows they are not real and the folks who believe are indeed odd.

Camomila · 09/08/2019 12:30

Lots of people believe in God/the after life/reincarnation/karma...

akmum18 · 09/08/2019 12:31

If you’ve seen one/witnessed something then you’re more likely to believe ghosts are real than not, you can’t say they don’t exist without proof, if you don’t like it then don’t listen to them we’re not all the same and have to agree or disagree on the same subjects but mocking those who believe is U

Barbarafromblackpool · 09/08/2019 12:31

Yeah, it's weird. I'm not interested in it in anyway.

Cornettoninja · 09/08/2019 12:32

I will however keep trying to prove myself wrong

I nominate you to go to skin-walker ranch! Let me live vicariously through you Grin

That place fascinates me although I think the following largely leans towards aliens rather than ghosts.

Barbarafromblackpool · 09/08/2019 12:32

Any way

PorkHollywood · 09/08/2019 12:32

I wouldn't call them odd, no. Nor a liar, I just think their eyes have maybe played a trick on them.

CallMeRachel · 09/08/2019 12:34

I don't see it as being any odder than those who believe in God tbh.

Each to their own.

Skittlesandbeer · 09/08/2019 12:35

Believing in ghosts and imaginary phenomena used to be a bit of fun, and make boring lives a tad more interesting. Now it’s spread to gullibility with important political issues affecting millions of people and the actual planet, it’s not so fun.

If you enjoy slippery slopes, find a fairground instead. Keep it a personal hobby.

littlewriggler · 09/08/2019 12:36

I find it odd too. Even if I believed in souls and the afterlife, why would a ghost look like the human, warts and all. Why would it be wearing the same clothes? As far as I'm aware, your soul has nothing to do with your current fashion choices or acne problems.

I do believe in human memory being very complex, able to alter itself and create powerful illusions.

Cornettoninja · 09/08/2019 12:36

Paranormality sounds interesting but then I’m pretty certain it isn’t going to ‘case closed’. Ghosts can neither be proved or disproved, much like a god.

It’s fine to settle on a side of an argument but presenting evidence that likely just confirms your bias isn’t a line drawn under the argument.

ScreamingValenta · 09/08/2019 12:36

Not really - when you consider all forms of paranormal beliefs, right down to superstitions such as crossing your fingers, I think you'd find those who believe in the supernatural are not a tiny minority.

You could also consider religion - ghosts feature in many religions, as well as a general belief in life after death. On the whole, humans are heavily pre-conditioned to accept the idea of ghosts, if they want to believe in them, it's not a difficult mental leap.

Having said all that, I think these ghost-hunting investigations where people take along loads of equipment are more about having a hobby than nurturing a spiritual belief.

Pinkout · 09/08/2019 12:37

I feel the same about God too. Equivalent to an adult believing in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy imo.

Chescascurious · 09/08/2019 12:38

I don't believe in them myself, but I don't think it's odd. I think people should be allowed to believe in whatever they want, as long as it's not hurting anyone.

Bravelurker · 09/08/2019 12:38

If I saw something suss, I would go to the most logical explanation and seek medical attention and get my meds changed. That is in no way an insult to anyone BTW it's just where my first thought would go.
Fwiw, I have seen a couple of things in childhood but I put it down to bad things that were going on in my young life in which I had no control over.
