To think I dealt with this quite badly?

Feedback session with more senior person at work today. They’re quite slippery at giving feedback and have felt dispirited with their backhanded compliments in the past so was a bit on edge. In a nutshell, they said that they thought I was capable but that I panic/get stressed which could make other people doubt me Confused But that they would always have me on their team if they could. They said I reminded them of themselves when they were younger and that they were giving me advice in light of that. They were quite honest and said that I was obviously liked in the workplace as was constantly given jobs (we work in a project based environment) rather than drifting...

I stupidly focused on this aspect and began questioning them about this, asking if that was true and if people really do drift?! Feel like this wasn’t the most professional thing to focus on...

They did give me good advice though and when the session ended we chatted and I feel like I was inadvertently a bit patronising. Congratulated them on “managing the project well” ConfusedBlush

Does anyone else always say the wrong thing at work? I don’t like my job and can’t wait to move but feel like I’m useless socially

I think you are overthinking this.

You know how they said you have a tendency to panic/get stressed........

It seems you react/speak without thinking things through.

I'm the same, I overthink everything. However, in my defence, on my annual review my boss talked about how much stress my colleague was under (hey, what about me) iv been called "rough" as in "posh people like a bit of rough". Iv been belittled due to the area I live in (own my own house, mortgage in my name) my boss (director) sneaks up to my office door trying to catch me not working (failed every time) I get shouted down constantly . At meetings I'm overlooked and ignored. I'm a manager btw. You can always ask for a second meeting to discuss what's worried you and thank your lucky stars you dont work for my company Flowers

I also think you are overthinking this. But reacting well to feedback is an important skill. If I were you I would drop the person a quick note tomorrow thanking them for the feedback. It’s not easy to give and they sound like they are backing you in your career.

I was so awkward today when my boss made a joke and pretty much ran away. In all other aspects of life Im fine but something about work. Cringe. I wouldnt think you handled that badly though, sounds like you are doing great.
