To want the cashier to finish serving me before serving next customer?

I was in the restaurant of a well known department store. I was paying for my food by card so paid via contactless. I stood there waiting for my receipt (assuming the cashier was going to give it to me). I didn't think our "transaction" had completed so I asked her where the baby high chairs where (baby strapped to me in carrier). She said "over there somewhere" pointing to a corner.

She didn't give me a receipt and proceeded to ask the next customer what items she had on her tray (I was still stood in front of the cashier at this point). I said to the cashier "can I have my receipt please?" The next customer then said abruptly "are you NOT finished?'" I should've said "no, I'm waiting for my receipt" but it was an awkward situation and her tone was rude so I didn't acknowledge her.

The cashier gave me my receipt and I left the queue. My mum said I should talk to the manager but I didn't think it was a big enough deal to potentially land someone in trouble. But she was supposed to finish serving me first before serving the next customer right?! And why did the lady in the queue after me have such an abrupt attitude?!

I needed my receipt because I ordered hot food. They were making it and bringing it to the table. In case things went wrong I wanted to be able to prove what items I paid for. No idea why I feel like I have to justify wanting my receipt! Thought it was standard to be given one!

Working in hospitality it’s very rare that anyone asks for a receipt, my work at times is quite fast paced so it’s a case of serve, serve, serve. IF people want a receipt they usually ask for one when i tell them the total.

I wouldn’t have complained I do not think the server did anything wrong, you got your receipt.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 08/08/2019 16:14

Not many people want receipts for food; she probably didn't think you wanted it; especially if the transaction went through and you were talking about baby carriers.

It's no big deal, no complaints required. Everyone thought you were finished, you weren't; you got your receipt. Storm in a teacup Smile

How strange, YANBU, totally normal in our local morrisons and the like to give you a receipt automatically, especially if they are bringing you food. Even our local Costa ask if you need your receipt.

Sycamoretrees · 08/08/2019 16:15

Maybe it was a simple mistake (And not a very big one at that!), why is it bothering you so much that you wanted to start a thread about it?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/08/2019 16:23

It does sound like a simple mistake. And I always ask for a receipt when paying by contactless especially because it's less and less standard to be given one. The cashier thought the transaction had finished and was trying to move on efficiently.

I'm not sure what your mum thought you were going to complain about, given you got your receipt once you'd explained you wanted one?

ilovesooty · 08/08/2019 16:25

I can't see why your mum is encouraging you to talk to a manager.

Sootyandsweep2019 · 08/08/2019 16:29

Can't believe you'd be concerned enough to start a thread on this ; let alone consider speaking to the manager. How Petty and vindictive.

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/08/2019 16:30

I always want a receipt for hot food, then I can see how long I have waited for my food and check I have paid the correct amount.

Pinkout · 08/08/2019 16:31

Depends where it was. If it’s a fast food joint like McDonald’s or Greggs then YABU to expect a receipt, literally no one gets a receipt. If it was a restaurant chain then I guess it’s more common for the staff to ask if you’d like a receipt.

I worked in Greggs years ago as a student and we were specifically told only to give receipts if customers asked. I worked there for about 10 months and I’d say five people asked me in that time.

Pinkout · 08/08/2019 16:33

Sorry, just saw department store. I’d imagine giving receipts out isn’t common.

BeanBag7 · 08/08/2019 16:33

Wouldn't bother me. She didn't know you wanted a receipt (many people dont). When she realised, you were given a receipt.

The other customer in the queue was a bit rude depending on tone, but that's not the cashier's fault.

Zazazube · 08/08/2019 16:34

Actually I’m with the lady behind you. You sound like one of those annoying faffers who take ages to get their stuff together and hold things up.

SilverySurfer · 08/08/2019 16:35

What will you do with the receipt now that you have it? Put it in the bin presumably? Such a big fuss over nothing at all. Your DM is being ridiculous to suggest you should complain to the manager over this non event.

Zazazube · 08/08/2019 16:42

Also your mum sounds like a drama llama!

What on Earth would your complaint to the manager be anyway? That you had to ask for a receipt? 😂

Sebw · 08/08/2019 16:46

Is this a wind up?

Sirzy · 08/08/2019 16:48

This falls into the mountain out of molehill category! Not sure what your complaint would be.

PrtScn · 08/08/2019 16:49

I thought the whole point of contactless was no receipt and PIN speedy transactions

mathanxiety · 08/08/2019 16:49

I think you should complain to the manager.

"Over there somewhere" is not the answer to the question "Where are the high chairs?" for starters.

A cashier should ask if you want your receipt, not assume you don't want it. The default should be to assume you want it.

The cashier was poorly trained and rude.

Zazazube · 08/08/2019 16:51

Not for contactless. As a pp said, the whole point of contactless is speedy transaction with the default being no receipt.

blancheduboiss · 08/08/2019 16:52

I just don’t see why you’d go out of your way to potentially land someone in trouble and even cost them their job over something so minor. Don’t complain.

Vesperia · 08/08/2019 16:53

I'm surprised that not many people want a receipt for food. Being self-employed OH always has a receipt for food as it's claimed back in expenses

MerlinsScarf · 08/08/2019 16:55

I'm picturing something like Debenhams or House of Fraser cafe where they either call you up to collect hot food from the counter or bring it over.

It's totally normal to want a receipt in that case. As you say, it makes life a lot easier if they forget your food, or sometimes you need to show it to claim your order.

The cashier rectified the issue so that's fine, I think the manager isn't needed in that case. But the customer behind was rude. You were presumably saving time by asking about the high chair while the transaction was being processed on the till, so the opposite of faffing around.

PortiaCastis · 08/08/2019 16:56

How petty

Mybestfriendisanalien · 08/08/2019 16:57

Very much doubt they’d get into trouble over this. More like the manager would (secretly) roll their eyes at “that” customer.

PerfectPenquins · 08/08/2019 16:58

The cashier was rude and pretty useless- over there somewhere is ridiculous. Always offer a receipt to the customer don't assume.
