Charged a tenner at travelodge to check in early ...

So I could leave luggage - left luggage was full.
Ok so it’s only a tenner but they said “yeah the rooms ready” Check In was 3pm. This was 1.30.

A bit crap IMO

Ok no need to milk it. I'm prepared to accept that even though their website says they don't provide luggage storage, some of them do. Just not any of the ones I've stayed at. As an aside, the picture makes no mention of Travelodge

matahairyy · 08/08/2019 10:54

Aha! Started this as they replied to my complaint with “sorry that’s policy”
I replied along the lines of “come on m8” and just got this

To be fair their website states “most are unable to provide luggage storage”, the implication that some do.

Frog- do you have many friends?

Fair result OP. Seems they acknowledge they were being unreasonable as well!

WickedGoodDoge · 08/08/2019 10:58

Well the Travelodge website says that “most” don’t offer left luggage, but all the ones I’ve stayed in do, so I suspect they are being generous in their definition of “most” and using it to get people to pay to check in early or late....

Oops, cross post with Jacques

matahairyy · 08/08/2019 10:59

Yy. And I get that central London might be full. I’d therefore not be a wanker 90 min before check in time.

What? Is that including you or not?

LolaSmiles · 08/08/2019 11:10

To me left luggage is more for people who are leaving rather than people arriving early and dumping bags. That's how I've always thought of it. If it's full then it's full. They offered early check in.

It's nice they refunded the £10 but I think that's more a goodwill gesture and lowers the hassle for them rather than a sign they were unreasonable.

ElizaDee · 08/08/2019 11:22

I think YABU.

It's clearly stated on the website when you book that you can choose early check in/late check out at a tenner each.

matahairyy · 08/08/2019 11:26

When the room was ready ? 90 minutes?

OP posts:
campion · 08/08/2019 11:34

The room was ready - they were being cheeky. We checked in 2 hours early at Premier Inn without a problem as the room was ready.
Maybe the person with the brain was off today.

verticality · 08/08/2019 11:59

It's a rubbish policy! Maybe try a more accommodating chain next time.

verticality · 08/08/2019 12:02

Also, I have stayed in that Covent Garden Travellodge and it was one of the grimmest hotels I've ever been in. Barely any natural light, and furniture bolted to the floor.

ElizaDee · 08/08/2019 12:14

When the room was ready ? 90 minutes?

Yes. You are paying for the convenience of being let in early/leaving later.

EskewedBeef · 08/08/2019 12:14

It does seem unfair to charge for something that has absolutely no cost or inconvenience to them. The room happened to be ready ahead of official check in time (as most will be), so they could have let you go up a bit early without any charge and left you with a positive impression of the hotel (or at least not a negative one). They're obviously not concerned with promoting a decent reputation, which will come as a surprise to nobody who's ever stayed in a Travelodge!

herculepoirot2 · 08/08/2019 12:16

They can charge you to check in 90 mins early. Why wouldn’t they? If they are full they don’t particularly need to do customers favours.

JacquesHammer · 08/08/2019 12:20

Yes. You are paying for the convenience of being let in early/leaving later

Which is fair enough when requesting just that as you are paying for a specific service. If the room just happens to be ready, I can’t think of many places that would then try and impose a fee because they can’t fulfil another part of the hotel services.

zeezee3 · 08/08/2019 12:35

@matahairyy

They always charge a tenner to check in early. This is not new information.

NancyJoan · 08/08/2019 12:36

Utterly crap customer service. It will cost them precisely no more to give you the key card at 1.30pm instead of 3pm, why not just do it?

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 08/08/2019 12:42

Most central London hotels have their left luggage spaces filled by 10am IME.

I've paid it before - £10 to get to drop bags, freshen up, use a private loo isn't too bad, it's better value if you get there at 11am though!

ElizaDee · 08/08/2019 12:43

Because you'd end up with EVERYONE due to check in, turning up early, and expecting special treatment. Their policy is, if you access your room before the official check in time, then you pay for the privilege of doing so.

Because if there wasn’t a charge, everyone would do it and they would be fending off a wave of cheeky fuckers every afternoon from 12?

JacquesHammer · 08/08/2019 12:48

And yet Premier Inn who don’t charge for early check in if your room happens to be ready don’t appear to be inundated with people trying it on as you don’t know whether your room is ready until you get there.
