AIBU: Nanny left a bag of her own vomit in my kitchen. What to do?

Today, among my nanny's bags, I saw a bag that looked like it was filled with vomit. When I looked inside, it turns out it was indeed a bag of her vomit (and a sleeve of cookies). I've had suspicions about strange behaviour before... small lies, denying when things break, not taking great care of our home... but this takes the cake. This is quite a difficult situation because she's a lovely person but I've felt for a while she has quite bad emotional issues. But now I wonder whether she's suited to look after a child. What if my young child had found the bag? Why, if she was sick, could she not have been sick in the toilet? Why didn't she throw the bag away? This is a step too far for me, but I'm wondering whether this falls under gross misconduct or if it's not considered so severe in the eyes of employment law. Any advice on what to do?

Do you have a cat?
Does she drive with your child at all- could be vomit bag from your child getting car sick...

As in how do you know it is her vomit?

When you said nanny, I assumed you meant a grandmother maybe with dementia. Which would be grim enough. But if you mean that's your childminder's vomit, that's beyond grim. Do you not have bins in your house?

Laiste · 06/08/2019 19:51

@MyFlabberIsAghast it's a cellophane tube from inside a long box of cookies with cookies in it.

Chakano · 06/08/2019 19:51

sleeve of cookies = packet of biscuits.

Also, why are you expecting nanny to care for your home? Nannies are only paid for child care, not housekeeping, not laundry, not ironing, not washing dishes, etc. If you want nanny + housekeeping you have to pay a higher wage.

My aunt my mother told me came home drunk and vommed into her handbag during the night and left it to fester. eugh...

Maybe it's not hers. Did she get a delivery from Amazon recently? She could collect it.

Coyoacan · 06/08/2019 20:06

And how do you know it not a child's vomit?

evilharpy · 06/08/2019 20:07

For those citing unfair dismissal: Sleeve of cookies is a very American term, so I'm assuming the OP is in the US in which case UK/EU employment law would not apply.

Agree this sounds like Bulimia. (I worked on an adult eating disorder ward for 4 years). Not her fault at all bless her.

I’d call Beat for info. www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/

midsomermurderess · 06/08/2019 20:12

Oh dear. Has echoes of Candia McWilliam's A Little Stranger about it.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 06/08/2019 20:14

@HappyLoneParentDay reported under what grounds?

pinkoneblueone · 06/08/2019 20:14

It definitely seems like she has an eating disorder

MirzyMoo · 06/08/2019 20:21

Gross Misconduct for vomiting whilst looking after YOUR children?

Perhaps ask if she is feeling well and help her out instead of snooping through her things and trying to catch her out. And for the record she is their to look after your children not care for your house. Shocking @LMLMLMLM12345

Schuyler · 06/08/2019 20:22

Going through her personal belongings is totally unacceptable.

Batshittery · 06/08/2019 20:24

Where are you OP? Come back and tell us about these bags that you were going through

SupremeDreamz · 06/08/2019 20:27

Why didn't she throw the bag away?

If she has an eating disorder it will be because she didn't throw that bag away. Just like if an alcoholic leaves a suspect bottle somewhere, they've probably cleared away tens more. Poor woman.

FelixFelicis6 · 06/08/2019 20:29

Eh?

18YearsAMummy · 06/08/2019 20:32

Why were you in her bag?

londonrach · 06/08/2019 20:32

Op..how would you like it if your nanny went through your things. Thats rude and unlawful. Re the sick thing..not your problem. Yabu

AllFourOfThem · 06/08/2019 20:34

Could be bulimia, it could be morning sickness (and the cookies were to try and settle her stomach) or even a bug.

None are gross misconduct.

Catswhiskas11 · 06/08/2019 20:34

Is this for real?

transformandriseup · 06/08/2019 20:35

Has she stolen a pack of your biscuits? Is there more to this?
