to think that cream cakes must be treated with care

I know this is in AIBU but no character assassination please.

I went to the supermarket for a few bits including a cream flan thing for DD's birthday today.

When I was going through the checkout the assistant tipped it on its side to scan it. Plenty of strawberries rolled off and she spent a few moments trying to 'bounce' them back on again (cake was in a cake box and obviously she couldn't touch it with her fingers) and muttered something like "It's just a few strawberries".

I took a look and it really looked the worse for wear, the piped cream was all bashed. I wouldn't have bought it like that.

I said, not at all rudely, "I don't think it looks that great any more, I'd like to change it please."

"Did you want to change it now?" she huffed. I thought I'd misunderstood so I asked her what she'd said. She repeated it.

"When else?" I said, not politely, completely bewildered. This exchange hadn't taken too long but in the meantime a queue had formed and 5 or so people were looking at me with irritation.

Long story short, I came back right away with a replacement cream cake (it's a small store) and she refused to speak to me after that, as she scanned the rest of my shopping. Completely refused. When she'd finished I said to her, look, I don't know why you're ignoring me, I don't think it's very nice. She said, "I don't know what you're talking about, I gave you your receipt didn't I?" and turned away.

WTF actually happened? Surely it's logical to just say something like oops, sorry, when you damage an item that someone's buying? What could I have done differently? I wanted to have a decent-looking cream cake for DD's birthday, not one that looked like it had been dropped because it basically had.

Yanbu!

SuzieSunshine · 06/08/2019 12:31

YANBU. She was probably embarrassed that she'd tipped and ruined the cake in the first place. No way to speak to a customer though - just enjoy the cake and don't shop there again. Some people are just downright rude.

FadedRed · 06/08/2019 12:33

Of course YANBU.

Daffodil2018 · 06/08/2019 12:33

YANBU. She was probably just having a bad day but that is really poor customer service. If you can be arsed you could have a word with the manager next time you're in.

You’re definitely not being unreasonable, but if all the stupid places to put a bar code! Surely it could have put on the bottom of the box.
I expect she was embarrassed, I would’ve wanted it changed to, btw I would have asked someone to change it for me too not home a fetched another one myself.

Was this Aldi? I bloody love Aldi, but they smashed my eggs through once and I decided to just let it go.

I can't see this happening in m&s or Sainsbury's
