Irrelevant Advice WHY!

TheBadNeighbour · 05/08/2019 12:50

Why do people do this? Give advice that is totally irrelevant to what someone is asking? It happens in real life but also a lot on here ...

OP ā€œI’m looking for a big car in which I can fit 5 buggies and 5 kids ... ā€œ
Mumsnetter ā€œget a mini! They’re great cars, very reliable!ā€

OP ā€œI cant decide what dog breed to get ... it must be a massive dog like a Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound with no prey drive .. ā€œ
Mumsnet ā€œget a Jack Russel! I had one and he was great!ā€

OP ā€œcan anyone recommend a holiday destination? Somewhere sunny and not in the UK ... ā€œ
Mumsnetter ā€œCornwall would be perfect for you!ā€

Why? Is it because people don’t read the OP properly or do some people think they know what’s best for the OP despite their own opinions?

The best one is 'what are the best tampons/towels?'

Always, always the reply comes 'Get a mooncup!'

Other exmples I don't think people do it on purpose they just skim read the post.

Poor reading comprehension skills.

It's called acute necessitudo quia consilium syndrome and it can be lethal.

Every person has to give certain number of advice per day and if you are not meeting the numbers your body goes into survival mode and you get this impulse need to give ANY advice on anything even if it's inaccurate or irrelevant, because otherwise.... Your body gives up, your mind goes and you slowly wither into nothingness while weakly whispering the last advice you ever give:
"Don't stop giving advice even if it's irrelevant. Save yourself"

And that's why we have so much irrelevant advice here😁

Oh the Mooncup one bugs me too. ANY issue Sanpro related can be solved with a Mooncup. Even when the OP specifically states that she cannot use Mooncups at all.

OP I've noticed MN is pretty bad for this. The readers don't care what parameters are set by the recommendation enquirer, they just jump in with what they would choose.

TheFridgeRaider · 05/08/2019 13:22

@TheBadNeighbour Grin

@ChesterDrawsDoesntExist what absolutely kills me is how people happily recommend £3 mooncup from ebay. That just can't be really safe! I wouldn't buy a silicone baking tray for that, let alone something you are supposed to put inside of yourself😮

What's more annoying is when you answer the question perfectly and they don't listen or change their mind half way through

Elliebellbell · 05/08/2019 13:58

Whilst the majority of posters are genuinely kind and helpful, so many people have their own agenda they're determined to push.

One that stuck in my mind was op asking for best way to hide grey roots, cue a flurry of "embrace the grey!" posts, some of which were quite aggressive when op and a few others said "no I don't want to".

It's about what they want, not the op.

Weathergirl1 · 05/08/2019 14:03

I do find some posts hilarious for this. There was someone on Style & Beauty a couple of months ago looking for investment watch recommendations. She had a budget of around £2k and listed out the sort she wanted. Cue several people recommending cheap plastic fashion watches 🤣🤣

She was very polite and restrained in her responses to them!

A PP is right though, it's just people wanting to push their own agendas / brag about what they do themselves!
