AIBU to let my 12 year old son wear a dinosaur tshirt

My dh thinks I shouldn't be buying him any more jurassic park t-shirts. Reckons he'd get bullied. I asked what he should be wearing then? Fred Perry or something similar he suggested. To be clear, ds chose the t-shirt, I didn't just get it. What do you think? I said if he thinks ds would get bullied then perhaps he was the sort of child who would have done the bullying! I guess I'm asking AIBU in allowing ds to wear what he wants and not what others expect?

It should be up to your son about what he wears but I can see where your partner is coming from. My eldest is only 8 and already started with brand names only now lol.

Yanbu
Let your son wear what he wants

Chimchar · 05/08/2019 10:36

I think a Jurassic park T-shirt is absolutely fine...and if your ds likes it, then that's great. I know what your do means though.

kids seem to find their cool anytime from year 7 upwards I think...my ds is just 13 and is only just aware of what he likes...I've dressed him up until now in mainly primark clothes. He's becoming more interested in brands now though. My other ds got trendy at 14 and now at nearly 19, has a very strong sense of style.

YesQueen · 05/08/2019 10:40

I spent Saturday wearing cat shoes and a Harry Potter t shirt, it's fine

cookingonwine · 05/08/2019 10:59

I think it's lovely that your DH is aware that a child could be bullied by fashion some parents haven't got a clue that fashion could be a trigger for being bullied by peers.

This reminds me of an episode of the Goldberg's where the mom took the youngest shopping and ended up buying the child a sweater on it saying train on it. The child didn't want to wear the sweater but didn't want to upset the mom.

CatInADoghouse · 05/08/2019 11:28

YANBU to let your DS wear what he likes. There's nothing wrong with a Jurassic Park t-shirt. If that's what he wants to wear then let him. Plenty of adults wear movie and band t-shirts. I can't see what's wrong it! Isn't Fred Perry a bit of a chav brand now?
@YesQueen that sounds like an awesome outfit!

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/08/2019 11:48

My DS is 15 and wears T shirts with film logos all the time. His favourite is a Godzilla one. He and his mates are probably the quirkier kids in the year but don't get bullied. He might if he wore Fred Perry though as it is seen as 'Road man' clothing (think chavvy)

Debfronut · 05/08/2019 12:37

How ridiculous your DH is. None of my children were bullied over clothing and none of them are a slave to fashion. A few sarcastic remarks to anyone who said anything and they soon left them alone. Teach him to wear what he loves and smirk at people who wear what others say is cool.

kateandme · 05/08/2019 12:42

oh good god is this where we are coming to.
also i see plenty of fully grown men in film and character t-shirts.
this is such knobish thinking.

thejudgesaidhewasatitandIagree · 05/08/2019 12:42

My ds wears cartoon type T-shirt's in a 'I'm too cool to conform' way. Grin If someone pointed it out he'd be all 'yeah? I think it's cool'.

Chopchip · 05/08/2019 12:55

Its ridiculous to think wearing a Jurassic Park t-shirt at 12 is going to lead to bullying. My DH wears t-shirts like that to work (Star Wars, Ghostbusters etc), doesn’t cause him any issues!

ispepsiok · 05/08/2019 12:55

My 12 year old still wears Jurassic Park shirts

LagunaBubbles · 05/08/2019 12:58

My 17 year DS and DH wear film t shirts all the time, so it's no great surprise my 11 year is following them! If and when the time comes he wants to wear different clothes fine but there is nothing wrong with letting him wear what he wants. I find it really sad that some people would bully any child for wearing film t shirts. And also really sad that younger kids than 11 can become obsessed with designer clothes to.

AuntieDolly · 05/08/2019 12:59

My 21YO has a dinosaur duvet set (I think he's being ironic in some way!)

Liverbird77 · 05/08/2019 12:59

I would be fine with my ds choosing that T-shirt.
I won't be buying him brand names. We don't wear them either, so that's just the way it is. If he wanted to save up his own money and buy them, then that would be fine.
I would be addressing any bullying as and when it came up. I would much rather be the mum with the kid in the Jurassic Park t shirt than the mum of a bully.

GabsAlot · 05/08/2019 12:59

Eh loads of kids wear film logos -kids will find any reason to bully if they want to even wearing brand names

Lilyannarose · 05/08/2019 13:02

It's fine. It's his choice.
I wouldn't give it a second thought.

theunrivalledjoysofparenting · 05/08/2019 13:02

My eldest is only 8 and already started with brand names only now lol.

Why is that a reason to lol, @shadowloveragain? I’d be teaching my dc the value of money and not to be so shallow and easily led.

lavenderbluedilly · 05/08/2019 13:08

Surely Jurassic Park is fine, as any other movie t-shirt would be. Now if it was one of those appliqué Boden ones, he might have a point, but don’t see the problem otherwise.

Pythonesque · 05/08/2019 13:10

Much safer to wear the shirt you want to wear than to wear a brand name than might turn out to be the "wrong" one ...
My teenagers don't have logo-ed stuff in the main, apart from a few items acquired second hand.

ittakes2 · 05/08/2019 13:10

NEXT loves a dinosaur tee-shirt and you can see by their website they offer them up to size 16 so there is obviously a market for it - but when I offered my son to choose a NEXT tee-shirt he said no to all the dinosaur ones saying they were for younger kids. I think its because it is used quite extensively for young boys. BUT that said - I think the message that your son should not be ashamed of his choices in life is more important. And if NEXT is anything to go by he won't be the only 12 year old wearing dinosaurs. www.next.co.uk/search?w=dinosaur%20tshirt&isort=score

KeepFuckingOff · 05/08/2019 13:10

I’m DH is 35 and wearing a teenage mutant ninja turtles t-shirt today 🤷🏻‍♀️

KeepFuckingOff · 05/08/2019 13:11

My not I’m.🤦🏻‍♀️

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 05/08/2019 13:11

If it was dinotrucks or paw patrol, I'd have a rethink, but Jurassic Park... that's classic 12 year old territory.

PatriciaHolm · 05/08/2019 13:12

Of course it's fine! My 13 year old would happily wear that.
