AIBU to let my 12 year old son wear a dinosaur tshirt

My dh thinks I shouldn't be buying him any more jurassic park t-shirts. Reckons he'd get bullied. I asked what he should be wearing then? Fred Perry or something similar he suggested. To be clear, ds chose the t-shirt, I didn't just get it. What do you think? I said if he thinks ds would get bullied then perhaps he was the sort of child who would have done the bullying! I guess I'm asking AIBU in allowing ds to wear what he wants and not what others expect?

God he is 12 let him wear what he likes. Tell your dh to stop projecting stuff on your ds. My youngest was still wearing Jurassic park.stuff at that age nobody ever said anything.
Kids are all different. My eldest couldnt care less about brands as long as the clothes are comfy and cheap he never looks at a label.
I wear film/tv t-shirts and never bought an overpriced ' famous brand' t-shirt in my life and I survived😀
Let your son develop his own taste and sod anyone else.

SenoraSurf · 05/08/2019 13:35

I teach in an upper school, I wear Jurassic Park tshirts and most kids ask where I get them from because they want it too (I'm 25 fwiw)

ohtheholidays · 05/08/2019 13:36

Your DH is being daft!

There are grown men and women that were dinosaur t-shirts and they don't seem to get bullied so why the hell would a child be bullied for wearing one!?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 05/08/2019 13:39

"Find your cool" aka "become a sheep." What sane parent would be encouraging their kid into the nonsense that is brands?

DS13 is very cool, very popular and a bit of a leader. Lots of his crowd wear brands; he thinks it's daft.

Your husband sounds very insecure.

PleaseGoogleIt · 05/08/2019 13:39

I have a Jurassic Park t-shirt! I bought it for the Universal parks Grin.

DingleyDells · 05/08/2019 13:41

Well it's hardly a My Little Pony t-shirt, is it?!

Let him wear what he likes.

squiggleirl · 05/08/2019 13:42

DS is 12. He wouldn't be seen dead in a Fred Perry t-shirt. He does like branded stuff (11 degrees, Abercrombie, Hollister), sports gear and movie t-shirts. He has a couple of movie t-shirts - Star Wars, Jurrassic Park, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters.

Your DH doesn't have a clue.... You want to see a kids get bullied? Send him out looking like his Dad dressed him for a tennis match.

dinosareforever · 05/08/2019 13:42

😂 my friend is 31 wears a Jurassic Park t shirt. I think it isn't the worst thing in the world to show your dc it's ok not to be a sheep and follow the crowd.

If kids want to bully him, unfortunately they'll think of anything to pick on.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/08/2019 13:43

Your DH is a knob and Fred Perry is overpriced.

My DS1 is nearly 12 and still wears How To Train Your Dragon and Pikachu stuff - it's his life, he can wear what he likes - although I'd probably draw the line at putting him into overpriced "brands" at this age, especially at the speed he's growing!

Rosehip10 · 05/08/2019 13:43

Your dh is being unreasonable as fred Perry these days is mainly worn by pissed up football casual types.

QueenofLouisiana · 05/08/2019 13:45

DS spent yesterday in a Deadpool T-shirt, so movies etc should be fine. He also wears Hollister, Lyle and Scott, Superdry and various sports brands. He’s 14.

He wouldn’t put on Fred Perry!

Willow2017 · 05/08/2019 13:46

You want to see a kids get bullied? Send him out looking like his Dad dressed him for a tennis match.

🤣🤣🤣

justbinthefeckinbyebyebox · 05/08/2019 13:46

Buying a t-shirt because of the designer logo is for people with more money than sense!
Your dh is on a road to nowhere with that.

yanbu
Let your ds choose for himself.

Mesmermancer · 05/08/2019 13:49

said if he thinks ds would get bullied then perhaps he was the sort of child who would have done the bullying!

Or he witnessed kids being bullied for similar at school? Being "babyish" or "young minded" was a big thing for bullying when I was school.

scarbados · 05/08/2019 13:50

Only a terminally stupid dad would be endouraging his kids into the tyranny of designer labels.

YANBU. Your partner is being ridiculous. Kids should be encouraged to dress how they want not to follow the sheep.

Mesmermancer · 05/08/2019 13:51

DS spent yesterday in a Deadpool T-shirt

I think the film matters tho, Deadpool is different to Jurassic Park and generally seen as more "cool" - I mean it's rated a 15 so won't be seen as just a "kid film" due to the swearing, sex references etc

GabsAlot · 05/08/2019 13:52

Fred perry thats a joke in itself isn it -My dh is currently wearing a joker t shirt from batman yesterday was wearing rick and morty-hes 51

OtraCosaMariposa · 05/08/2019 13:53

Your DH is a twit. Being "will only ever wear branded" is ridiculous at 32 or 42, never mind 12.

Jurassic Park t-shirts are fine.

OtraCosaMariposa · 05/08/2019 13:54

My eldest is only 8 and already started with brand names only now lol

Yuck. What a lovely little consumerist you're creating. Lol. Hmm

ILearnedItFromABook · 05/08/2019 13:56

If your husband is only trying to protect your son from being teased by the other kids, I'd just reassure him that 12 is still young. I'd expect he won't be the only one in his class wearing that type of clothing. As long as your son is happy, that's all that matters, and surely he'll let you know if something changes and he wants to change his style.

If your husband is embarrassed on his son's behalf (or personally embarrassed by the fact that his son still like Jurassic Park tees), he's being stupid and needs to grow up a bit.

Either way, your son should wear what he likes, and anyway, it's a Jurassic Park t-shirt, for goodness sake! I might worry that he'd attract unwanted attention from bullies if he were wearing something perceived to be "girly", but dinosaurs? I'm sure he'll be fine!

frogsoup · 05/08/2019 13:56

Shock at an 8yo demanding brand names only! I dont think any of ds class of 9yos would know a brand name if it hit them in the face.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/08/2019 13:59

I have dinosaur converse and I'm 41Grin

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 05/08/2019 13:59

My 11 year old ds has zero interest in fashion and brands - clothes appear in his wardrobe, he homes in on his favourites and would rather visit the dentist than go clothes shopping. Why does he have to be steered nto this Cool/not Cool crap to avoid potential bullying in September?

Why can't the people who care about their designer labels, just enjoy their overpriced uniform clothes and leave everybody else to wear what the hell they want!

Kitting out for high school is already costing an arm and a leg, having to buy the cool trainers for a ds who would be happier in Nerf ones from Asda is adding insult to injury.

hopefulandstrong · 05/08/2019 14:02

My dp wears his to work with the matching hoodie!
My ds got called gay for wearing at colourful T-shirt from footlocker cost £40.
Anyone can get bullied it's how they react, my ds said ' well you seem to know a lot about what gay people wear?...'
he was in year 7 at the time

Stressedandovertired · 05/08/2019 14:08

Good for you, krustykittens. I was never fussed about conforming at school. Some other kids were occasionally a pain in the neck about it, but it was always more important to me to live my own life and pursue my own interests. It's very understandable that parents worry about their children being bullied. However, that can sometimes cross over into putting pressure on kids to fit in or giving them the impression that they're a disappointment for being "different".
