To buy a birthday cake when it's not my birthday...

Or anyone else in the houses birthday!
I just really want cake, and for some reason only birthday cake is appealing to me at the moment. I'm not even pregnant so can't use cravings as an excuse. Tell me wise mumsnetters is it totally weird to buy birthday cake when it's not for a birthday? 😂

The dump truck toy still exists, now on a shelf in grown up sons room. It's a tonka, they last forever. Darn sure its birthday is today if anyone needs an excuse.
Also I just made a chocolate fudge cake, sadly more frosting than cake but ah well.

The best cakes have a large frosting-to-cake ratio IMHO.

OP - just buy the cake. I always do. And I eat it all, every last slice, as DH doesn't like cake.

Jemima232 · 04/08/2019 17:21

this may be why I'm on yet another dier

CrispSandwiches19 · 04/08/2019 17:22

I've done this more times than I can count.. I fancy cake now!

salsmum · 04/08/2019 17:27

Omg! I'm soo happy I didn't realise there were others out there Grin no more dirty little secret yay!!!

Indicative · 04/08/2019 17:28

Colin the Caterpillars are for life not just for birthdays!

CensorshipHereIsAJoke · 04/08/2019 17:29

@Catofdoom
You could die next week and never have a birthday again

You live up to your username, don't ya 😂😂😂

I've had a lemon eclair from Sainsbury's today. You should have bought the bday cake op.

EssentialHummus · 04/08/2019 17:29

EssentialHummus I couldn’t eat that poor wee doggie, but I might make cake.

I’ve eaten him and several of his siblings Blush.

greathat · 04/08/2019 17:37

A very merry unbirthday to you!

catofdoom · 04/08/2019 17:40

@CensorshipHereIsAJoke sorry! It did sound a little glum. One of my best friends dropped down dead at 48 recently though. It happens. I wouldn't put off cake or any other thing I fancied.

MorningHair · 04/08/2019 17:44

I now have a craving for a slice of one of those not-very-nice-but-weirdly-evocative iced sponge birthday cakes with a small line of jam and synthetic cream filling. They come home in party bags with plastic tat and your child forgets about them...

Powerof4 · 04/08/2019 17:49

Oh no, this is making me think ianbu to buy an M&S rainbow cake!!!

ceebeejeebies · 04/08/2019 19:00

I buy iced Madeira cake with jam in the middle for £1 tastes just like birthday cake

WindsweptEgret · 04/08/2019 19:08

What’s the difference between a birthday cake and a cake? I am confused too. Some cakes say 'Happy Birthday' on them, but otherwise any cake bought for a birthday is a birthday cake surely? Confused We just buy the cake we want and stick candles on it.

Sorry yes, obviously any cake can be used as a birthday cake, I was just meaning something like this!

Something ridiculously sweet, with jam and covered in probably too thick icing, and quite a lot of the time the cheaper the better!

@dangerfloof the more frosting the better!

The cake was delicious btw, hope everyone else I made want cake enjoyed there's too!

Can confirm the cake was delicious even though not birthday cake. Ended up half cake half frosting. Not a bad ratio.

WindsweptEgret · 04/08/2019 20:00

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 04/08/2019 20:08

Today is Obama’s birthdays as well as Billy Bob Thornton and Meghan Markle. Why wouldn’t you buy cake, I mean do you hate the USA and The Royal family? As well as Santa Claus! Do you?! Buy the cake or you hate the world!

Dangerfloof · 04/08/2019 20:11

I love a great coffee cake, I make one sometimes. Just a basic Victoria sponge with a cooled strong coffee or espresso in the mix.
Best coffee cake I ever had was at a cafe over a river in Robin hoods bay.

graziemille567 · 04/08/2019 20:13

Do it, once in a blue moon I find myself drawn to Colin the Caterpillar cakes and it accidentally makes its way into my shopping basket. No regrets!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 04/08/2019 20:16

I really fancy one of those enormous, totally synthetic Costco birthday cakes. Wonder if you can freeze them...

Dangerfloof · 04/08/2019 20:27

Yup, just cut it up before freezing, unlike someone I know -me- who froze half, then had to defrost and eat half. Duh.

QuilliamCakespeare · 04/08/2019 20:40

Not at all weird. Did it this weekend Grin

QuilliamCakespeare · 04/08/2019 20:40

And it was a Clyde The Caterpillar. Cake

user586837 · 04/08/2019 21:24

My mum used to get it occasionally for me when I was a child (not just on my birthday). It was the only cake I really liked. I would definitely get some if I felt like it. Personally I would get it from M and S as it think theirs is much nicer than other supermarket birthday cake CakeSmile
