To think that cricket is shit?

I dont get it. Its so monotonous and seems to go on forever and the scoring is all over the place. Its all wickets and runs and overs. At least with football when the ball goes into the net you know that someone has scored, same with rugby when the ball go over the line. But cricket just completley and utterly baffles me and always has. Yet some people seem to really love it. Yesterday I saw a bloke who was clearly meant to be working sneakily watching the Ashes on his mobile phone, its obviously rivetting to some.

Its just boring shit though, isnt it?

It's pretty closed minded to pronounce that it's shit because you don't understand it.

Potplant · 03/08/2019 21:42

One day cricket is alright, although the last half hour is when it's gets interesting. It's best watched 'live' on a warm sunny day with a picnic and a few glasses of wine.

Test cricket though zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Spinnaret · 03/08/2019 21:42

Mix - Test match special theme:

Sounds of my youth.

Everyone else has said it better than I could. It is a fascinating sport, skill, stamina, strategy, sunshine. What's not to like

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/08/2019 21:48

Cricket is ace, especially test matches, especially if your side is bowling. As with all games, you don't have enough people to do everything, so there's a balance. You can put all your fielders out around the field, and the batsmen won't be able to score more than singles, but it'll be difficult to get them out; or you can crowd them around the wicket, with a high chance of catches - but all they have to do is to clear the inner ring and the ball is going to go to the boundary. Add to that the different bowling styles and all the ball by ball tactics, and it's riveting.

Partridgeamongstthepigeons · 03/08/2019 21:50

I don't get it they seem to just stand around an awful lot of the time. I would prefer to watch rounders on tv tbh. DH feels the same.

Nirvana1979 · 03/08/2019 21:57

Glorified rounders imo. 😝

I can watch most sports apart from cricket, golf, motor racing and darts.

mnahmnah · 03/08/2019 22:10

Try being married to a cricketer! April-September. Every Saturday gone 11-8. I’ve tried taking the DC along but they refuse now because it’s ‘long and boring and nothing happens and dad just stands there doing nothing’ Grin

Medievalist · 03/08/2019 22:12

the rules of rugby are pretty straightforward. A try is when the ball goes over the line. You can also score via a goal kick. Thats pretty much it

I've watched a lot of rugby and cricket courtesy of dh and dcs. Rugby is easily as complicated.

BackforGood · 03/08/2019 22:12

So something is boring because you don't understand how it works? That's what primary school kids say, isn't it? YABU.

This ^

YANBU to not be interested. That's fine. It isn't for you. However YABVU to declare it shit just because you don't understand it.

Oh, and I don't understand rugby. Have watched lots of matches and I have no idea what most penalties are given for and I have no idea why certain moves are good or disappointing. Doesn't mean it is a shit game, just means I don't understand either the rules or the nuances of the game.

Thoughtlessinengland · 03/08/2019 22:17

Visit India perhaps? The entire country’s pulse beats with cricket. It is everywhere, in people’s blood flesh and tears - the national religion it’s called. And similar in Pakistan and Bangladesh. But India is worlds richest cricket market. It’s like a fever grips the nation when India plays. And if India plays Pakistan - I kid you not there are police on the (deserted) streets.

So, my point is: to each, their own.

LatteLove · 03/08/2019 22:18

I went to a rugby match last year. First of all I didn’t realise “smart casual” for the hospitality at the rugby meant jeans and wellies so I looked a complete arsehole in a dress and wedges.

The match was so dull. The only entertaining bit was when someone accidentally pulled down an opposing players shorts in the bit where they lift them up (line out?) and we saw his bare arse.

I’d definitely prefer a day at the cricket!

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 03/08/2019 22:22

YANBU.
Cricket is dull as ditchwater

MissConductUS · 03/08/2019 22:22

It seems even less exciting than American baseball, which is really saying something.

minionsrule · 03/08/2019 22:27

Don't mention Duckworth Lewis system..... i mentioned it once but i think i got away with it Grin..... minds would be blown!
Seriously i don't get the love for the Tour de France and i you couldn't pay me to watch it but i wouldn't say it's shit just cos i don't 'get it', i just choose not to watch it and smile politely when my friends tell me about it.
Live and let live

Alloftheboys · 03/08/2019 22:29

@mnahmnah
Sign I bought for Mam and Dads wedding anniversary (he’s an umpire)

To think that cricket is shit?
minionsrule · 03/08/2019 22:37

alloftheboys
Lol i love that sign Grin

LaPufalina · 03/08/2019 22:37

YABVU.
It's engrossing (I actually prefer the five day game), and I'd say was the only thing that properly chills me out. The Monday of the 2005 final Test at the oval was the best tenner I ever spent Grin

TriJo · 03/08/2019 22:42

YANBU, maybe it's my Irish upbringing but I find it absolutely atrocious to watch and I'm a huge fan of other sports. Give me a good rugby or hurling match any day of the week.

Glitterfisher · 03/08/2019 22:45

YABVVU.

We are huge cricket and football fans in our house. It's far from dull once you understand it. I used to really enjoy T20 or one day games but now o have watched a test match live it's fascinating, we were gutted to not be able to return for the final days after watching the 1st two, even DS age 12 and 10.

I don't understand rugby really, find it pretty boring to watch but probably because I don't really understand it, it clearly isn't actually boring as so many people love it. Same with most sports, darts and snooker etc can be so exciting once you get into them.

RedSheep73 · 03/08/2019 22:48

I'm not a fan. But at least it isn't football. No one ever beats up the opposing supporters. They can even be trusted to have a drink without causing a riot!

nancy75 · 03/08/2019 22:49

Oh my god, try being married to an Australian Angry bloody boring bloody cricket is like a religious cult to my DH, he loves it Angry

Sparklingbrook · 03/08/2019 22:54

I went to a baseball match in Boston. It was bizarre. We all had to stand up and sing a song at certain points.Confused
Everyone around us spent the whole match eating, some people were conducting a business meeting, and hardly anyone was actually watching the match.
Won't be going again.

RandomlyChosenName · 03/08/2019 22:58

Tennis. That's a weird and impossible to understand game. Only sport I don't like.

Cricket is easy in its basic form. Each run between the stumps is one run. If the ball hits the stump you're out. It IS basically simplified rounders. It's so gentle and lovely and also so gripping and exciting. What's not to like?

JellyfishAndShells · 03/08/2019 23:03

Football is the ultimate in tedium - just kicking goals into one end or the other. Most toddlers get the idea very quickly and the game doesn’t exactly progress in complexity past that. Rugby is more interesting at least.

Cricket is great.

Partridgeamongstthepigeons · 03/08/2019 23:07

I think you underestimate the tactics in football as cricket just looks like a load of men standing around to me.
