Thanks Boris.

We are in France this week- it’s cost us over 80 quid to fill the car and our food shops are extortionate. A bag of oranges was nearly £5 and it cost £50 for three of us to go to the waterpark. A Belgian family there said that they have just come back from Britain and stocked up on shoes, clothes and even Christmas presents for their family because the euro to sterling exchange rate is now so good (for them, not for us).
Everything seems so much more expensive than this time last year- is this what we are to expect now?

Living the brexit - brink dream 🙄

I don't know how people are comparing prices. Within 1km of my house in Italy I can pay between 0.99c and 5 euros for apricots! Generally I find food cheaper in the UK for manufactured products like biscuits, soups etc. And cheaper in Italy for raw ingredients.

woman19 · 04/08/2019 13:52

This is for from outside of EU. Uk is still in EU
Sure are. Smile

Clavinova · 04/08/2019 13:56

Although the notice reads;
"These procedures do not apply to the movements of animal products between the 27 Member States of the EU."

There should be 28 member states.

missclimpson · 04/08/2019 13:59

I realised afterwards that @Scaryteacher must be talking about countries outside the EU. I have another trip booked to the UK for the end of September to see the family and stock up on the things that I need.

LaurieMarlow · 04/08/2019 14:00

Re Ireland. I went in 2011 and prices were shocking They have the euro.

Ireland just has a very different economic setup to the UK. It’s not specifically about the euro.

Salaries/social welfare are much higher too.

darkcloudsandsunnyskies · 04/08/2019 14:04

Gosh you people are really dumb.

If you knew all along that this was going to happen then you should have added a currency stash to your everything else stash.

Why didnt you ffs.

ssd · 04/08/2019 14:11

Roll on independence. Let's get away from Boris and the likes and get some sanity back.

TheNightof1000Fans · 04/08/2019 14:12

It’s gone from 1.11 four weeks ago to 1.07 today. So your £5 oranges were always going to be ridiculously expensive Hmm

BlueSkiesLies · 04/08/2019 14:16

“Shocked and horrified”

Only if you are stupid enough to not have managed to seen it read any half reputable mainstream news

fancynancyclancy · 04/08/2019 14:17

Have French family & parents have had a house in the South for decades. Everything went expensive after the Euro & food has always being very expensive particularly chicken, salmon etc

fancynancyclancy · 04/08/2019 14:19

Clothing & fuel also always been expensive. There housing is cheaper though in general.

sophiestew · 04/08/2019 14:23

It is awful but the Right Wing Media convinced uneducated people that it was "them immigrants" rather than austerity that was causing problems, and so the Leave vote happened. Angry Sad

I am terrified for what will happen and the shit future that awaits my own young adult DC. I just hope they can manage to carve out a happy future elsewhere.

To be shocked and horrified by the shit exchange rate?

It's completely the wrong season for oranges so I would expect them to be expensive!

Clavinova · 04/08/2019 14:43

uneducated people

Surely, the most uneducated people are among those who didn't vote all - the missing 28%? Glasgow is supposed to be the least educated city in the UK - the EU referendum turnout in Glasgow was only 56%.

scaryteacher · 04/08/2019 14:43

FGS, get with it ...we leave on 31.10.19. This document is specifically for when we have left the EU, and was published before the March date when we were expected to leave.

Those (like me) who regularly imported bacon, black pudding and megatons of cheddar, need to be aware of what can and can't come in.

Chochito · 04/08/2019 14:46

Article about financial effects of no deal Brexit on households.

scaryteacher · 04/08/2019 14:46

I was not talking about countries outside the EU, except in the case of the UK once we have left. I came back to Brussels via Dunkirk last weekend, and there are pictographs up at the port, and new customs areas set up for when we leave.

Here's the link, you'll find a raft of stuff all related to Brexit.

A no-deal crash-out leaves many of the 1.3 million Brits living in the EU facing a major problem – what will happen if they are rushed to their local hospital? A no-deal departure ends the UK’s involvement in the European health insurance card scheme and other agreements overnight. While it is bad news for holidaymakers, it has the potential to force many of those who live in the EU to abandon their dream. Alternatively, those who live in another EU member state are already sorted and in either a private health scheme provided by their employer, or have registered for whatever scheme that member state runs (like the mutualiteit in Belgium)

TheFridgeRaider · 04/08/2019 14:58

Let me quote you back to you.

To the PP who said she shopped before skiing in France each year, don't try it this year. No meat, cheese. milk etc can be brought in wef 01.01.19.

That's why people are bit baffled.

timeforakinderworld · 04/08/2019 15:04

@Scaryteacher. Not everyone is in that situation. Lots of people have jobs that require them to be EU members. Overnight they risk losing their jobs and healthcare provision. They may become illegal through no fault of their own. And it's not just a question of giving up on a dream - this will split up families.

TheFridgeRaider · 04/08/2019 15:12

Lots of people have jobs that require them to be EU members.
Which jobs require that? I am curious as may be on a job hunt in few years.

They may become illegal through no fault of their own
Teacher was right here. You don't end up "being illegal" if you followed procedures put in place by states in prep for Brexit.

Which will never happen anyway imho and it's just a waste of money🤦

timeforakinderworld · 04/08/2019 15:24

Which jobs require that?
One example - there are a lot of people who live in Italy and work in Switzerland. Switzerland has an agreement with the EU which makes this possible. There is no such agreement afaik with the UK.

Teacher was right here.
No! You are presuming all countries have put agreements in place - they haven't! Even some of the agreements put in place mean a reduction in rights for British citizens - many of whom were not given a vote but are now suffering the consequences. Is it surprising that pressure groups are reporting a high level of mental distress in these groups - we have been in limbo for years and our own government has refused to meet with us.

scaryteacher · 04/08/2019 15:29

Time I live in Belgium, which iirc, is an EU member State.

UK citizens have been given guidance that they will be allowed to stay and work, but may have to get a visa, or look at citizenship from 2021.

Healthcare will remain in place, as long as you are in either an employers scheme (as dh and I are); a mutualiteit, or you pay for your own private healthcare. Those things are not nationality dependent as Belgium has huge amounts of international workers here, many of whom are not from EU member states, but places like the US, Canada, Aus, NZ, Turkey etc.

To say that any Brit living in an EU member state will become illegal overnight is not true. Yes, you have to find out what is going on, but there is plenty of stuff published by the FCO, the local embassies etc for advice and guidance. The only thing we did was to change our driving licences prior to the supposed exit date in March, as we are here until mid October, when we move back to the UK. Everything else was staying the same according to the Belgian authorities.

Which member states will make it illegal for Brits to be there?

timeforakinderworld · 04/08/2019 15:34

To say that any Brit living in an EU member state will become illegal overnight is not true.
I know. Which is why I didn't say it. Hmm Good for you that you live in Belgium and it's all hunkydory. It's not too bad in Italy but there are some grey areas.
