Beginning to panic about skyrocketing inflation as a result of a no deal Brexit...

ManagingLife · 03/08/2019 15:28

I appreciate this has been done to death on here, judging by the amount of threads on MN about Brexit.

However, I scroll past these threads as I was very much undecided with the vote, though went with remain in the end, and had a degree of faith in the powers that be regardless. That feeling has now turned to utter disbelief at the state of how things are being 'run', if you can call it that at all.

Despite being a low income earner and a tenant, I am a saver and scrimper. I can't afford to cut back any further - I have goals to reach and children to feed, clothe and nurture (I am a newly single parent).

The Bank of England's most recent forecast of the immediate aftermath in the event of a no deal Brexit has left me horrified... I fear destitution is likely if a no deal happens.

Should I start bulk buying and drawing out cash, etc? Or AIBU and hysterical?!?

You've all got to be joking, surely?! It's 2019 ffs, it's not world war 2! The gov managed to keep us all fed during 2 World wars, I don't think leaving the EU will mean we will all go hungry. This is ridiculous

@Chloemol I’m not about to reveal what my job is but I am familiar with the fintech sector and I can assure you that relocation and huge reductions in spending by this market within the UK is absolutely due to brexit.

I can also assure you that government are in a blind panic and business is extremely poorly prepared for a non deal brexit.

You really should all be very worried.

Personally I have been stockpiling medication. As we get closer to the date of departure I will stockpile much more.

Those on low incomes are going to really struggle to afford the basics when prices skyrocket.

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2019 18:15

And yet they're predicting disruption to food and medicines. Shame they don't share your optimism

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 03/08/2019 18:15

We will face shortages if we leave the EU without a deal. That's a simple fact. The Customs Declaration System was designed pre-referendum. It simply isn't designed to accommodate the level of declarations we will face with no deal - a projected increase of over 100 million. And it's not as easy as "just upgrade it then". So there absolutely will be queues at ports and delays on certain products. It's unavoidable. These will have a knock effect on the value of the £, on inflation and ultimately interest rates. Anyone who thinks we "won't even notice" is in cloud cuckoo land.

The governments own planning states there will be food shortages, damage to the economy, and increased prices.

StoorieHoose · 03/08/2019 18:16

Oh so we have rationing to look forward to??? Sunlit uplands indeed

What fantastic advice Confused

@Thegracefuloctopus we didn’t have a global economy in the 1940s in the same way that we do now. It’s 2019 and we rely on trade with hundreds of other countries to keep us fed, to keep drugs available and to keep the lights on. Our population is also twice the size.

Your comment shows a frightening lack of understanding of economics.

People who think we can survive this because we (along with our many allies) survived a world war 70 years ago are crackers. We also didn’t chose to go to war. It was horrific and those who lived through it tend to be the biggest supporters of organisations like the EU because they have kept stability and prevented further wars. Brexit on the other hand is something we have (stupidly) chosen to inflict on ourselves and is entirely avoidable.

BogglesGoggles · 03/08/2019 18:24

Panicking never helped anyone. I would focus on what you can do to improve your financial position in general. If something like brexit could lead to destitution then it’s likely to happen to you at some point anyway even if brexit goes smoothly.

Justanotherlurker · 03/08/2019 18:24

You are not being hysterical, the wise thing to do is prepare for shortages, civil unrest and failure of the NHS.

Only need to see the second post to this hysterical post, I bet we have had "brexit hasn't happened yet" posts as well.

Remember that even invoking Art 50 would have caused a massive recession, also remember that us not joining the euro would cause mass inflation, there was no bubble in the housing market etc etc.

I'm a remainer but this hysterical remainer stuff has become a meme over the past few years, I bet most are unironically Labour supporters as well and brushed off the reports from the same banks, big business as Corbyn being bad for GDP as right wing propaganda.

The astroturfing on this site is obviously being done by the new recruits. It's comical

CensorshipHereIsAJoke · 03/08/2019 18:27

The Bank of England's most recent forecast of the immediate aftermath in the event of a no deal Brexit has left me horrified

Which is what?

Thegracefuloctopus · 03/08/2019 18:30

I just struggle to believe we need to stockpile food and will loose houses. Who are we going to loose houses to exactly? The whole Country will be in the same position! OK so we may have a shortage of Belgian chocolate and some wines. But we will be fine. We arnt all going to die because we've left the EU. Just for clarity, very much a remainder and the whole thing pisses me off. Scaremongering also pisses me off.

Hazardtired · 03/08/2019 18:30

I'm the PP breakfast skipper.

It's a calculated choice. Skip one meal now and stretch out eating two meals longer or eat three meals now and get to only eat one meal a day sooner. Having previously done the whole one meal a day thing I really don't recommend it. Two a day and I feel fine.

I'm a full time carer, we have some savings which are dwindling at an uncomfortable rate. My partners healthcare isn't 100% covered on the NHS and one of his many meds we have to get privately. We do it because it improves his quality of life.

Annoyingly there's multiple treatments available which wouldn't cure him but have the potential for him to be well enough to either a) cope on his own so I can work or b) both go back to work. None of these treatments are available on the NHS and we can't afford them privately as they are a few thousands a month.

So I'm facturing in food shortages and price hikes, medicine shortages and increase price on the medication we buy which we may or maybe not able to afford.

Skipping breakfast is an easy cut back. We don't go out to socialise as DP isn't well enough...what else can I cut back on? I've stopped buying treats.

Long term it's not looking good tbh. But as I said short term we're alright.

Sorry I'm obliged to add there is no list of medicines being stockpiled, essential life saving medicines are the ones supposedly being stockpiled by private companies and no one has quite defined what qualifies as essential life saving drugs. So it's all a mystery.

Protest. Contact your MP. Sign petitions.

BettyCrockaShit · 03/08/2019 18:31

Ahh, but what about the housecat brigade @devilinme ? All I can rely on is the occasional bluebottle (most of which they crunch before I'd even get a look in!)

Hazardtired · 03/08/2019 18:36

Oh forgot to say OP Google the bootstrap cook. She has lots of recipes online with cheap food for free and she's literally done a tin can cookbook which last I checked was 4 quid.

Jaxhog · 03/08/2019 18:41

It’s project fear all over again.

Have you seen food prices lately? It will only get worse after 31st October when we'll be paying even more for Spanish tomatoes and avocados, Irish beef and a myriad of other foodstuffs we've got used to eating. Oh, we can buy many of them from British producers, but they will be scarcer and cost even more.

Travel will certainly cost more, with sterling tanking even more than it already has.

StoorieHoose · 03/08/2019 18:43

I've just done my normal online weekly shop and it's at least £8 more than it was this time last month

LatteLove · 03/08/2019 18:43

It’s project fear all over again. Like many I am still waiting for all the doom and gloom predictions from the referendum to come to fruition. That’s not to say it might not be tougher than now for a while, but look at all the predictions taking place over the last few years, lots predicted hasn’t happened.

Jesus Fuck.

I might be wildly out on a limb here, but I’m going to hazard a guess that the governor of the Bank of England, whose predictions are frequently dismissed as “project fear”, is just a tiny bit cleverer, more educated, and better informed, than you.

OP you’re right to be worried, ignore the Brexshitters who time and again embarrass us all with their stupidity and ignorance and unwillingness to pull their heads out their arses and face up to what’s going on. I take consolation in the fact they’ll be as fucked as the rest of us.

Mamamia456 · 03/08/2019 18:52

Hazard tired - Have a look at the NHS website with regards to medication. They have been preparing since 2018 for what to do if we leave with a no deal. They have answered many questions on there to put people's minds at rest.

Hazardtired · 03/08/2019 19:16

Mama - thats really sweet of you and i've been aware for some time that the NHS plans are based on substitutions. Some meds can't be substituted that's why a freedom on info request was placed to see if those meds are being stockpiled. As no one knows whats being stockpiled or what meds cant be substituted the request couldnt be fullfilled.

RuggerHug · 03/08/2019 19:18

Everything Venger said at 18.05!

SilverySurfer · 03/08/2019 19:19

There's an ad on the right for Mercedes-Benz. It's obvious they and BMW won't want to sell to the UK post Brexit even though they sell more cars to us than any other country and I'm sure France will want to keep all their wine and cheese for themselves. Hmm

I wonder how many packets of cigs I will need to buy a new Merc? Grin

Crispmonster123 · 03/08/2019 19:24

wombleish

That’s me told Hmm

Pathetic. It’s to be expected though coming from a remainer

AskMeAboutBoswell · 03/08/2019 19:27

The uk is going to be like Mad Max after brexit! I'm off to add spikes and flame throwers to my car, got to protect my ciggie and gin miniature stash 😂😂😂
