Beginning to panic about skyrocketing inflation as a result of a no deal Brexit...

ManagingLife · 03/08/2019 15:28

I appreciate this has been done to death on here, judging by the amount of threads on MN about Brexit.

However, I scroll past these threads as I was very much undecided with the vote, though went with remain in the end, and had a degree of faith in the powers that be regardless. That feeling has now turned to utter disbelief at the state of how things are being 'run', if you can call it that at all.

Despite being a low income earner and a tenant, I am a saver and scrimper. I can't afford to cut back any further - I have goals to reach and children to feed, clothe and nurture (I am a newly single parent).

The Bank of England's most recent forecast of the immediate aftermath in the event of a no deal Brexit has left me horrified... I fear destitution is likely if a no deal happens.

Should I start bulk buying and drawing out cash, etc? Or AIBU and hysterical?!?

You are obviously not in the motor industry considering it is world wide decline, even shock horror outside the eu.

If you did work in the industry you would realise that the world wide scrappage scheme that was enacted before brexit has shock horror nothing to do with brexit.

Oh ffs. BMW & Merc sell all the cars they can make.
There was no worldwide scrappage scheme.
If there was, scrappage schemes increase demand for new cars, because older ones are.....wait for it....scrapped.

The clue is in the beginning of the word scrappage.

Anyone who thinks BMW execs are worried about the future of their firm if they cannot import to the UK is bonkers. Sure, it'll be a real nuisance for them, and that's it.

raskolnikova · 03/08/2019 21:18

That doesnt change overnight.

If there's no deal, a shit load of stuff is going to happen literally overnight.

Why people are so happy about it I'm still trying to figure out.

Oh dear, pretending you work in the industry and being so ill informed.

Yes it was done under "greener" technology, but the underlying situation was a global slowdown in consumerism, nothing to do with brexit.

Being an admin assistant for a car sales firm doesn't mean you have an understanding of globalised trends.

TheElementsSong · 03/08/2019 21:25

looking forward to the name changes come the next GE to be honest I doubt many will stand by their ardent remainer name.

Why?

Justanotherlurker · 03/08/2019 21:52

@TheElementsSong

Because there is a lot of astrotrurfing on MN and it's not the tories doing it, there is a few users (who some i respect) will post on political topics under a specific username and if it plays out like the last couple of GE the likes of, will not be championing multi-nats or globalised banks of the warnings of a corbyn led gov, it's the general tone of mn.

Remember that MN went into meltdown in 2010 because they had never met a tory, 2015 the same and brexit was just meme worthy as "who will serve me my Pret coffee"

It will become a problem that those big bank/businesses are saying the same thing wrt a hit of gdp and squaring the whole.

That is the real reason why brexit is shit show, it isn't because of the right, its because of the dyed in the wool, working class background don't want to accept they are right wing economically.

Tellmetruth4 · 03/08/2019 21:54

YANBU.

Manno75 · 03/08/2019 21:55

Survival of the wealthiest going forward unfortunately.

Dahliachlo · 03/08/2019 22:03

The gov managed to keep us all fed during 2 World wars

No, the United States fed us during 2 World Wars. American ships braved German torpedoes to keep us supplied with food after we could no longer import food from mainland Europe.

We don’t quite have that relationship with the US any more...

Outsomnia · 03/08/2019 22:07

Those who voted Brexit because they thought leaving the EU would enhance their lives.... not going to happen.

But console yourselves that the elites will profit from the fallout, and no immediate issues for them either.

Anyone want to buy a pup here? Well that is what we have been sold now. And they will grin at us forever more.

TheElementsSong · 03/08/2019 22:07

Because there is a lot of astrotrurfing on MN

Specifically Remainers are the astroturf? Confused

Cinammoncake · 03/08/2019 22:13

Survival of the wealthiest going forward unfortunately.

yep

madeyemoodysmum · 03/08/2019 22:16

Best get the home brew going ASAP then 😂

Graphista · 03/08/2019 22:22

"Currently we have more people in work then ever before & the lowest rate of unemployment." According to who?!

If you're talking about this govts own figs they have changed the definition of "in paid employment" to anyone who averages ONE HOUR per FORTNIGHT, and even then last figs I saw there's 40% more people applying for jobs than there are jobs advertised.

"That doesnt change overnight." Erm I think you'll find with such a huge change the pounds value dropping like a stone is entirely possible!

"There will more likely be a need to stimulate the economy than to curb rising inflation."

1 that's you admitting there ARE likely to be repercussions

2 our economy has needed stimulation for the last decade! The govt has done sod all about it though!

Here's a question - if us Remainers are SO WRONG about the effects of brexit that will happen, why does it even bother you leavers? Our actions according to most of you will have 0 effect on whether we leave and what the effects of leaving will be - so what are you afraid of?

As for the "astroturfing" accusations - I wonder if they count as "trollhunting"? I'm sure mnhq would LOVE to enter into a discussion of that!

I can assure you I am but a struggling, disabled, single mum worried sick about the repercussions for dd and I. That's the only dog I have in this race!

Justanotherlurker · 03/08/2019 22:27

Specifically Remainers are the astroturf?

I'm not getting into a sealioning situation, you can ignore the overall message and pretend

You can ignore my overall point and think that posting the "brexit bingo" meme unironiclly is some online win shows you are not that politically astute, considering you have no general come back i expect you are waiting for the guardian to inform your views.

The issue is that when you base your views on nothing but headlines and twitter you have no intelligent comeback,That's something you need to work on ...

Frankiestein402 · 03/08/2019 22:33

@chloemol - ". That’s not to say it might not be tougher than now for a while,"

Are you suggesting the leaver predictions of easy trade deals the day we leave were wrong? Which of their predictions should we pin our hopes on then?

Justanotherlurker · 03/08/2019 22:42

As for the "astroturfing" accusations - I wonder if they count as "trollhunting"? I'm sure mnhq would LOVE to enter into a discussion of that!

Childish cry to mum, don't pretend you have called it out with anti labour threads, i had a held a higher standing you considering our loggerheads.

Your problem is accepting you are neoliberal and trying to portray it is being a champion of the poor working class

TheElementsSong · 03/08/2019 22:43

I'm not getting into a sealioning situation, you can ignore the overall message and pretend
you are not that politically astute, considering you have no general come back i expect you are waiting for the guardian to inform your views.

Yeah. I apologise for not understanding your actual point and not engaging to your high intellectual standards and inferior political understanding. And, apparently, for only posting Guardian links (eh?) - I'm sure you will be able to show evidence that I am a prolific poster of, specifically, Guardian links.

As for your "overall message", you appear to be saying that astroturfers on MN are composed of Remainers and non-Tories (and possibly that they are mostly sockpuppets), whilst Tories and Leavers are all genuine individual posters. Again, I'm sure you have evidence of such perhaps from MNHQ.

As for people name changing in order to post on various topics, I believe this is an entirely commonplace behaviour on MN to separate out different aspects of people's interests.

As for not having a comeback, I can't help but note that going "Squirrel! Nasty familiar usernames! Astroturfers! Guardian readers!" on a thread not about astroturfers, might give the impression that you don't have a lot to say about the actual topic at hand.

Graphista · 03/08/2019 22:48

Lurker - genuinely wondering. Are you drunk? High? Your posts are getting increasingly strange - and I don't just mean as in us having different opinions but sentences not making sense etc

Are you ok?

Lifecraft · 03/08/2019 23:16

The gov managed to keep us all fed during 2 World wars

Anyone notice how the Brexit boasts are getting weaker. It started off about us calling the shots, holding all the cards etc. It's now reduced to "it won't be as bad as the blitz" or "it won't be the end of the world" or "well, we survived the war".

As for "we're taking back control on 31 October", you do realise that the 31 October was a date unilaterally imposed on us by the other 27 nations whilst we sat outside the room waiting to be called in to be told what the EU had decided for us.

Stick that in your arrogant Brexit pipe and smoke it.

Justanotherlurker · 03/08/2019 23:20

Yeah. I apologise for not understanding your actual point and not engaging to your high intellectual standards and inferior political understanding.

Well you did ignore the overall point and try to sea lion, so i accept your apology, but as for future reference, dont try and be snarky in those who call you out and try and be a bit more respectful of those who you consider less than you in political discussion.

We can now brush this off, it;s a win for you in pretending some remainers are uneducated idtiots,

Justanotherlurker · 03/08/2019 23:24

TheElementsSong

Stop the sea lioning, you thought you was clever with bringing up the brexit meme.

RosiePosiePuddle · 03/08/2019 23:27

What is astroturfing and sealioning?

DrVonPatak · 03/08/2019 23:47
  1. Open a bank account in a foreign currency, € or $
  2. Deposit a sum there.
  3. Get familiarized with Amazon pantry (not ideal, but needs must)
  4. Find which farm delivers milk, eggs etc.
  5. Localize the nearest farmer's market
  6. Stop panicking

Bartering with cigarettes and spirit bottles?! I am assuming it won’t be the apocalypse

& all the others taking the piss out of he cigarette comments - although some of the pisstakers were feckin' hilarious - do you not remember there was a thriving black market for fags & booze during & after WW2? That wasn't the apolcalypse either, although would have felt so to many who lived/died through it.

As the money supply dries up for us plebs, bartering will become more prevalent, & fags & booze become currency.

Anyhoo, I'm off to stockpile some silk stockings - pip pip!
